Fresh Rocker from Vacation

vacationWe’ve gotta keep Friday going with a banger, and I think this new tune from Vacation is just the right fit.  Underneath it all lays a very earnest pop song, verging on power-pop, but the song is filled with discordant noises and a furious rhythm that moves it to an entirely new place.  It doesn’t take too long to find this song repeating in your daily playlist, especially if you jam it outside on this beautiful Austin day (hope the rest of the world has such rad weather).  You can pick up the group’s new album, Candy Waves, on June 18th courtesy of Don Giovanni Records.

Feel Good Tune from Cowboy Indian Bear

cowboyindianbearA sure way to my heart is to throw in some gang vocals.  I don’t really care if they’re harmonized, angrily shouted or whatnot, I just want group vocals!  This beautiful track from Cowboy Indian Bear features just that, so I had to share it with you.  This isn’t an in-your-face group approach, but rather a relaxed gang vocal, accentuated by careful percussion and light instrumentation; it’s clear, at least on this tune, that the vocals are the winner…the song’s not shabby either. The band will be releasing their new record, Live Old Die Young, next week via The Record Machine, and I sincerely hope it makes it on your list of things to check out.

Turnip King Aims to Impress…and Succeeds

turnipkingThe word lo-fi gets tossed around all the time nowadays, and we’re definitely guilty of throwing it out there too, but I think the music that Turnip King has created definitely accomplishes that sound perfectly.  There’s a bit of tape fuzz on the edges of this song, though the group has their hands wrapped tightly around pop songwriting; they just choose to go off in a more explorative direction on this track. Fire Talk Records will be releasing the band’s new Moon Landing? EP on May 28th, and I appreciate the fact that I have no idea what to expect, other than I know it will be pretty solid.

New Electronica from Jon Hopkins

Jon-Hopkins-2Musically, I’m going out on a limb here, but only because B. Gray is our usual electronic afficionado.  But, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the work of Jon Hopkins.  He first came to my attention a few years ago when he worked on Diamond Mine with King Creosote; I still play that album all the time. More New Music from The Legs

legs-e1361513246175Not too long ago I brought you the first single from Legs upcoming album, Pass the Ringo, and I’m at it again with this new gem for your ears.  This track has a faster pace than “Two Colours,” and I’m personally attached to the way each verse sort of fades out just before picking up right where the group left off.  It’s surprising more people aren’t head over heels in love with this band, as songs like this are just too good to simply ignore.  You can pick up their LP next week from our homies over Log Lady Records.

Sorry I’m Late: Here’s The Fireworks

LIFE099_Cover480Man, I hate myself.  In the recovery process that was post-SXSW, I forgot how much I loved this jam from The Fireworks.  The band just recently released their The Fireworks EP, and it’s this blistering bit of guitar-pop for you to digest.  On this four song effort, the guitar work is really what does it for me; it provides a gritty edge to the group’s poppier underbelly.  This tune in particular will have you tapping your toes, bobbing your head and hopefully picking up the EP from Shelflife Records.  You know what’s good for you, don’t you?

Dark Wave from So Sexual

2756197706-1I’m really enjoying this new track from So Sexual, a Liverpool act who seem to have more in common with the sound of rival city, Manchester.  You can’t take away the nod to Joy Division, or perhaps even a darker version of the Killers.  I think the vocals have a higher tonal quality than they might lead on, so you can see that it’s more than just an average knock-off.  The band just released a single with Bleeding Gold Records, and you can grab that for cheap if you’re interested in the sounds. I dig it, if that counts.

Ballsy Rocker from Speedy Ortiz

3ue5_IMG1780_1I feel like Friday is going to be really loud in my head, so I may as well find some music to accompany it, right?  Nothing seems more fitting than this new track from Speedy Ortiz, the Massachusetts quartet of creative noise-rockers.  Opening guitar lines and cool vocals fall in line with traditional indie rock, but during the chorus they unleash a wall of noise and discord, not unlike many peers currently making name with a loud approach.  On April 30th Inflated Records will release a 7″ single, which will feature this tune “Ka-Prow” as the A-side.

New Music from Coma Cinema

1881Man, I’m digging this tune.  It’s so playful and casual, yet clearly well-written.  Coma Cinema is the project of Mat Cothran, and he’s got a bright future, if my words have anything to do with it (which I’m afraid they don’t–sorry Mat).  I like the backbone of the piano that works here while Cothran sings atop it; it’s almost bouncy, but not over the top.  And did he just say “fuck me in the graveyard?” Mat’s got a new effort titled Posthumous Release, which will come out on June 11th via Fork & Spoon Records.

Jangle to The Mantles

1885I’ve been waiting for new music from The Mantles for what seems like a long time; you know, something like four years.  On their first single for their new record, it almost has the feeling as if it’s been recorded in the group’s home studio; it’s got an uplifiting guitar jangle to it, while the vocals hold on to a certain sense of earnestness.  If you need some charming pop music to get you through the day, then you don’t need to look any further than here.   On June 18th Slumberland Records will be releasing Long Enough to Leave, and it’s already in my year end lists, I promise you.
