Last Week’s Jams (5.12 – 5.16)

If you just look at last week’s collection in our Album Streams post, you can see it was certainly a busy week out there; there were no fewer than six albums that I adored, whether it was new Gotobeds or High Water Marks or Artificial Go, there was plenty to browse through. But, that was just the albums, and didn’t even cover the great music that popped up on the single side of things. I mean, there was new Jeanines, Ryli, Lightheaded and Whitneys Playland...all of which should have you cranking up your speakers. Some good Austin (and adjacent love) for acts like Little Mazarn, San Gabriel, Gustave Ochoa and Adrian Quesada, so doing our part on the local scene. There’s just too much good stuff out there, thus, you’re required to press play and space out for an hour.

Another Track from Sugar for the Pill

Mondays can typically be slow around the music realm, but not when there’s a track from our current fave Grecian dream poppers, Sugar for the Pill, who offer what might be one of their best jams. Much like the song title, this track seems to revel in its stasis, opening up for the vocals and blossoming for a once in a lifetime experience where it all comes together. The voice stretches for new heights, letting the guitars shower the listener in these waves of striking post-punk glory. And, as they’re wont to do, they even share a moment of respite, just for you to catch your breath before diving headfirst back into the tune. Their Luv LP will be out shortly, so keep your eyes peeled.

Last Week’s Jams (4.28 – 5.2)

One third of the year is behind us now, and so we’re getting towards that moment when arbitrary best of 2025 lists began to pop up, but we’re keeping our eyes on the prize, focusing on new music, however it comes. There were some definite bonus tunes coming our way, like new Stereolab, as they prep for their forthcoming LP. Slumberland continued their great 2025 by announcing a new Autocamper LP (along with Safe Suburban Home). Personally, I was really excited to hear that Far Caspian has a new one on the way, as I loved the single shared this week. Perennial favorite acts also dropped new singles, so you’ll hear ditties from The High Water Marks, the Beths, Provoker and the Serfs. Give a little listen and start making your own mid-year list!

Sugar for the Pill Give Luv

Grecian dreampop outfit Sugar for the Pill have been getting a lot of play on our side of things, and with another single dropping, we just wanted to make sure the act popped up on your radar. For branding purposes, they operate on the softer side of things, creating an ambient bend that hangs like a stage backdrop, omnipresent but pulled aside occasionally to let you peek at the little nuances. This allows the vocals to operate almost like dreamy shooting stars, sort of shooting across the front of the mix, twinkling as the notes land in your ear. A couple of singles have dropped this year, so fingers crossed for a new LP!

Last Week’s Jams (3.31 – 4.4)

While we covered a lot of territory, I’ll admit that there’s definitely a shadow hanging over last week’s jams, namely the much-hyped return of Allo’ Darlin. I also had to go back and make sure I added in that Day Friend to the list, as that’s one of my favorite ATX acts. Plus, the return of ATH faves the High Water Marks makes another weekly highlight, and now that I’m thinking about it…there’s just a ton of rad stuff here. We got other Austin stuff represented with a new single from Thor & Friends, not to mention this really great introduction to the Pennys (which has some ATX connections). Also, some photos of Hey Nothing ran with a show review, so we threw up their latest single too! Stream it all below!

Sugar for the Pill Share Anelia

Of late, there have been several bands that have been driven by the heady club vibes of the late 80s/early 90s; they’ve repurposed that sound into something grander…and in the case for Sugar for the Pill, dreamier. They’re taking those heavy club reverberation, akin to the stuff we heard on early Dummy LPs, then transforming it into something heavenly. The vocals embrace the more ethereal realm, sort of cascading off into the shimmering edges as backing vocals layer the effect. It encircles you, swoops in, then carries you away, and it does so over and over again, each time letting your brain drift into the far off. Deifnitely hope we get more from the Greek outfit soon.

Sugar for the Pill Share Drink Conium

Greek outfit Sugar for the Pill will be releasing their debut LP next week, but we’ll be out and about at SXSW most likely, so wanted to make sure we’re up and at ’em by throwing our support behind the group’s new effort. We’ve got a brand new single too, so you win either way! This track is filled with these cascading guitar lines, shimmering behind the vocals, which I think tends to give the track that shoegaze mark, but a closer ear will reveal some extra elements that have me excited about what the band brings to the table. The rhythm section is bouncy, offering up catching lines that have you tapping your toes, so you get a little post-punk inflection in the tune. Plus, there’s these gang shouts that pop up in the chorus and at various other points, breaking through the dreaminess and giving a more punk ethos to the tune. So, while you’d like to lump them in with your like-minded dream gaze acts, check out how they turn it into something wholly their own. Wanderlust is out March 18th via Shelflife Records and Make Me Happy Records.
