Last Week’s Jams (10.13 – 10.17)

There was a lot of really great music, and in all likelihood, we’re nearing the end of the yearly cycle, where I expect to kind of see a flutter of singles then the lists will pop up! On our end, we covered a lot of the ATX this week, with new stuff from Jet Cemetery, Don’t Get Lemon, Gus Baldwin and Living Set. There were some new tunes that really rocked me, like Deathcat‘s pop punk masterpiece, not to mention the new Winged Wheel noise pop piece. Even managed to find some room for old favorites like Living Hour, Pia Fraus and Bubblegum Lemonade among the masses! Crank this playlist up, as it starts with a banger from Possible Humans.

Sulka Share Halloween Single

The Glaswegian scene is never far from my heart, and when this Sulka track bobbed our way, I knew that it was definitely a little chilled pop twist that I’d be digesting on repeat for a few days. After a brief screech of distortion, the song locks into this charming bit of bedroom pop; it’s feathered atop a nice strum and deepened melody. But, the winning moment is when the guitar wriggles with a little more weight, then the chorus opens with these overlapping harmonies that instantly made me swoon, so jump ahead to 54 second mark if you need that sweet tooth appeased. Where Sulka lets the song kind of flesh itself out is where the success lives, as so many like-minded acts would just settle into the rinse and repeat songwriting process…and that differentiation is what had me coming back.
