After a rather mellow preceding week, this past one hit hard with some bigs hits for us on our end. We took some time out to reach out to our friend Andy from Chime School, grabbed a quick interview and a vegan chili recipe. Fell in love with a couple of great new pop tunes from the likes of Sassyhiya and Sumos, plus that Casual Technicians wasn’t too shabby either. Repped some album love for Crack Cloud, Manners Manners, Julia Sophie, Immortal Nightbody, Red Jacket and Nightshift too. Plus, good solid Austin contingent getting love with new music from Being Dead, Hallo and Blood (Austin adjacent, right?). Dig in and find a cool tune below.

Sumos Share Hunting Tracks

After teasing us all week with hints of new music, Sumos did drop their darling new ditty, doing what they do best by executing perfect pop tunes. Everything functions on the steady strum and beat, almost operating as the musical metronome for your toes to keep the beat. And, once you’ve matched your internal rhythm, you can rest while the vocals offer up one of the brightest pop performances you’re going to get into today. When you hear the utterance of “one of these days,” you’ll hear the soaring of angels, rising to the highest stretched note, albeit with a charming sharpness that perfects the tune. Can’t wait to hear a new record from this lot.

Last week started off with a smattering of great tunes, but I’ll admit to wearing out by week’s end…for some reason just felt like there wasn’t a whole lot out there tugging at me! We were really excited to share some great ATX stuff like the latest from Feeling Small and Johanna Heilman…with Alien Eyelid‘s great new single just a few hours away from our home base. Lots of acts we’ve been harping on had new singles, like Daisies, The Soft Walls; we also got a new single from one of our SXSW raves, Lifeguard. Oh, and we’re starting off with the Particles, as we’re over the moon they’re getting some reissue treatment from Chapter Music.

Sumos Share Enemies Single; Surfacing Out Next Week

If you are looking at this month’s release schedule, you should certainly have the drop of Sumos’ Surfacing LP next Friday penciled in to your “things to rock out to” list. With one week to go, they’re sharing the energetic “Enemies,” which to me feels like a huge rush of sugar straight to the body; it’s like chugging a ton of RedBull than running about with your mates while you all don huge grins. The thumping rhythm section here sets the scene, but the vocal performance stretching the melody through every single moment was the surefire charm to get me to turn this one all the way to 11. Surfacing drops next week via Meritorio/Safe Suburban Home.

Looking back at last week, there was tons of really great stuff out there, and admittedly, there are a few things we just didn’t have time to get to on our end. But, stoked for Austin, as there was great new music from Being Dead, Transy Warhol, Holy Wire and new project Feeling Small. My favorite track from the most recent Blues Laywer LP got a video treatment, so I had to have that one out. RayRay covered that huge banger from Night Beats, who will be in town for Psych Fest. And, one of my favorite SXSW acts Snooper announced their new LP too, so you get a bunch of winning hits!

Sumos Drop New Single: Small Talk

Yesterday we were treating you to the electronic excursion of Manchester’s Orielles, but today, we’re going to the city’s softer pop side with a fresh single from Sumos. When the guitar notes pushed through my speakers at the start, I already began to swoon; this is the brand of indiepop that offers those crisp jangles and soothing vocals. The hook of this song works between the juxtaposition of two guitar styles, with one being sharp and angular while the other works in a more distorted manner, so it all feels sunny with a chance of thunderstorms…but like the weather in Austin, it quickly fades into more sunshine. Strap in, put on your shades and enjoy the warmth of Spring. Sumos will drop Surfacing on May 12th via Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home.

We obviously had a busy week being out and about in Austin, but we did cover some tracks early in the week we wanted to remind you of from the likes of Cindy and John Andrew. But, the rest of this week’s playlist of tracks includes singles from all the band’s we caught live and fell in love with during SXSW. Fortunately for you, the three of us all have distinctly different tastes, with lots of overlap, so you’re going to get a pretty varied jam session here this Monday morning. Sit back, and stream on.

Sumos Announce Surfacing

Funny how I spent the night watching Manchester acts only to come home to a track from another band from the area: Sumos. The group just announced Surfacing, their debut LP for Meritorio and Safe Suburban Home, with this new pop ditty to entice you to give it a listen. For me, this song embodies almost a classic alternative rock feel; it’s got just the faintest hints of noise fuzzing out the edges, but with this core that just seems breezy and euphoric. I was easily hooked by the teasing intro, switching from a lo-fi vocal to something brighter and more emphatic, building in that sweet hook for my ears. If you’re enjoying what you hear, Surfacing is out on May 12th.

Sumos Share Quiet Place

Sumos was a bedroom project, and then it was a band, and now it’s been forced to return to the bedroom. But the songwriting hasn’t suffered one single bit, pushing you right into the bounding rhythm, encouraging a little day time frolic in the confines of your work space. Rhythm means little, however, if its not wrapped up with a nice little melodic bow, caught here with these lightly jangling guitar notes and really soft vocals, the perfect indiepop meld. It’s a light-hearted way to kick on into the work week, whatever that means, but at least you can do it with a good tune?
