Last Week’s Jams (10.7 – 10.11)

We crushed the coverage last week; we had some ACL coverage as well as some Sigur Ros notes from their Austin show. But, we also covered a solid 28 tracks, 26 of which made the cut on our Last Week’s Jams (the new Boyracer and Rocky Lorelei can only be found on the site). A new track from the Serfs is still living rent-free in my brain, while I discovered just how much I’m enjoying Kim Deal‘s new solo stuff. That doesn’t even scratch the surface, as there were several Texas’ acts like Pets and Trauma Ray getting some new jams out. I will admit, perhaps I overdid it, but eh, you love the new stuff right? Cool. Stream it then.

Sunturns Announce Christmas Album

I guess it’s that time of year, when Christmas is around the corner; I can’t wait for my daughter to give me her list of wants. But, among other things, groups are popping up with Christmas themed albums; we had Dean/Britta/Sonic Boom last week, and now Norwegian supergroup, Sunturns, share their original single, “First Winter,” with us, along with news of Christmas III. When listening, you’ll definitely feel the fireside-warmth of the track as it uses light backing vocals and ornate little picking techniques to carefully move into the detailed narrative. The song broaches the fears of parenting, both in regards to the dark Norwegian Winter, but also the greater world, which certainly resonates on my parenting end. Christmas III will be out on December 6th courtesy of Fika Recordings.

Another Day, Another Sunturns Hit

sunturnsWhen I first heard of Sunturns and their Christmas oriented pop project, I was on the verge of dismissing it. But, I’ve quickly come around on falling for the band, all based upon the power of their delectable indiepop hits. You see, while the songs spin around Christmas ideas, they still have this emotional draw in the lyrics, drawing from personal experiences around the holiday. Honestly, if you didn’t hear the word Christmas, you’d likely just fall in love with the song. It’s heartwarming, both lyrically and musically; the band have crafted 10 original songs and a Ramones cover for their Christmas II album, which you can grab from the good folks over at Fika Recordings.

Clean Pop Tune from Sunturns

sunturnsSunturns is a group made up of heavy-hitters from inside the Swedish pop scene, but it would probably take too long to list them all, so may as well just focus on how great this song is. It’s a dosage of indiepop that comes off about as clean as you can get; there’s no jangling guitar or wall of atmospherics, just plain old good songwriting. It just so happens that this track, and the album’s content, take on Christmas…which is their second run at an original Christmas album. Fika Recordings will be releasing Christmas I and II as a double LP on red and white vinyl; it comes out on December 4th, just in time for a great gift. Enjoy the holiday season early.
