The conference has been over for a hot minute or two. We still have a bit more to share with you, but let’s start with pretty pictures.
This is fine.

SxSW Film Festival is over. Unlike the Music portion, you can go see exactly what I saw.
Going in with the intention to see as many docs as possible, I was lured by several features. Now, those features all have music, so I guess I am OK. But I did still see a lot of docs and few that were very music related. For instance, I was kicking it at The Paramount with my bros in Spandau Ballet.
Here come some brief reviews of things you need to see and some related photos from the film side of the conference.
In the whirlwind that was SXSW we weren’t able to fit in all the great SXSW interviews that we had scheduled; we were out and about trying to check out music. But, that being said, I wanted to share this interview with Panama…as the information presented clearly goes beyond just SXSW. Please excuse my folly, and enjoy getting to know a bit about the rising band via Jarrah. And if you like the track at the bottom, their Always EP is available now. Read more
One of the great things about Burger Records is their continuing push for diversity in the music world. They’ve been known for garage and psych, but I don’t think LA’s Vision really fits into that. They’ve got more of a British feel to what they’re working on, and I definitely have taken a liking to their self-titled record from last year. For me, they’re one of the band’s I’m really interested in checking out at SXSW. Get to know them via their short and sweet answers. Read more
Arizona’s The Rebel Set released a blast of a record this year, How to Make a Monster. Now it’s time for all those go-getters to track the band down and check out what they’re all about. They’ll be playing a lot of the Burger Records sponsored events, which is their home label, but get to know the band a little bit by checking them out in our interview! Read more
One of our favorite acts from 2013 aims to kill it again in 2014. Boston’s Bent Shapes play energetic rock n’ roll, making their album Feels Weird (Father Daughter Records) an exceptionally rewarding listen. We haven’t been able to catch them on tour yet, so we’re excited that they’re making it all the way down to Austin this year. Catch up with the band by reading our interview below with Ben. Read more
For those of you living outside of Austin, please pay attention. For those of you already here, you’re hopefully familiar with Austin’s John Wesley Coleman. His solo work and his work with The Golden Boys remain a constant in this city, and we briefly caught up with him to get a few words before he starts playing all over town. Check out what he had to say in response to our questions. Read more
I’m most definitely a sucker for some good crisp power-pop, which is one of the reasons I love the work of San Francisco’s Cocktails. It doesn’t hurt that some of their work for Father Daughter Records was recorded by Matthew Melton of Warm Soda. These guys are high up on my list of bands to catch at SXSW, and after reading a few words from the Patrick Clos and Lauren Matsui, maybe you’ll feel the same. Read more
Of all the names on the list for SXSW, perhaps none has had a greater run-up than Mutual Benefit. The work of the band has surely paid off with the praise heaped upon Love’s Crushing Diamond. The band make their way to Austin riding that wave, with promise to live up to, and beyond, the hype that’s been ascribed to them. Here’s how they answered some of our questions on their way into our city. Read more
CYMBALS are riding high after the recent release of their latest album, The Age of Fracture. They’re heading into to Austin to play SXSW, and they’ve got a special day lined up on Wednesday, March 12, opening for the Pains of Being Pure at Heart during the Force Field Day Party. Check out the band’s thoughts on the festival as they prepare to blow into town. Read more
