Last Week’s Jams (6.16 – 6.20)

I felt like I had to make up for missing out on some key hits the prior week, so I doubled down and the team and I brought you 27 brand new tunes. BGray was in love with the new Nations of Language, who he also caught up at the Kilby Block Party. Me?? Well, I fell in love with the women in the music scene, even getting into some new voices like Star Moles who I hadn’t been acquainted with before new singles hit me. Old ATH faves the Mary Onettes returned with a new single, so that was nice to hear…plus a new Pot Pot record is on its way via Felte. Oh…and did anyone write a better song than the opener from the Jeanines on this playlist? Indulge my friends.

Tearjerk Share Wind + Announce New LP

This brand new Tearjerk track ran on our friend John’s 101X Homegrown show, so if you’re not listening there on Sunday, not sure what you’re doing with your time; the group also played our party with John that we throw as a kickoff to SXSW here in town back in 2024. And the good news is, the band have just announced their forthcoming LP, and in doing so, share this great new jam. There’s a little bit of a Texas country in the songwriting, straddling the country meets indie swagger, but its the vocal change at the first chorus that will have you locked in. It takes this steady stroll through the verse and bursts into higher range, illustrating just how powerful Vanessa Jollay’s voice truly is. Keep an eye out on this one, as the track comes with the announcement of And the Angels Whirr hitting this August.

Last Week’s Jams (5.8 – 5.12)

Last week kicked off with a bang; we covered a whole bunch of tunes right off the bat, only to kind of fade towards the end of the week. Still, we managed to get up 20 tunes you should listen to, though the Mope City single isn’t out there yet on streaming services. Some Austin love came our way with Tearjerk and Balmorhea getting solid mentions, while we couldn’t help but to continue our fawning over Night Beats and their latest barrage of bangers. Threw in some new Shelflife releases from Lost Tapes and Youth Valley, and in the end, the new stuff from Shrapnel and Special Friend definitely won awards for my faves of the week. You’ve got an hour of legendary streams below!

Tearjerk Release Face to Face EP

The latest from Vanessa Jollay’s project, Tearjerk, just dropped a week or so ago, but I got in the Internet weeds, so didn’t have time to properly do the Face to Face EP justice. Through the six songs featured on the EP, you get to sample the various ways in which the band are taking traditional Texas spirits and mixing them into their own powerful sound. Take “Face to Face” for instance, where you can are greeted with this powerful bit of balladry, but where tradition might throw in more drawl and empty space, Tearjerk stomp on their pedals and fill your ears with this wall of punchy distortion, so you get Jollay’s sparkling vocals and the shimmering of dreamy noise! Perhaps you just want tradition, and that’s in here too by way of “Can’t You See I’m Changin” and “Blueberry,” both which show the Vanessa’s voice as the clear star. Please, do yourself a favor and spend a little time with Face to Face today!
