Last Week’s Jams (9.1 – 9.5)

There were some that covered more than us, and there were others that didn’t quite cover as much, but I’ll admit, feel like us only hitting 14 songs in a week was just scratching the surface of what came out last week. Still, we had Meritorio Records crushing the week’s end with new tunes from Strange Passage and the Wesleys. My personal favorite tune cranking out in under two minutes was that new jam from Teenage Tom Petties. Good to see the Apartments back too, so we ran the first single from their forthcoming LP, not to mention peeked back at the latest LP from The Fisheremen Three. It’s a quick run through this week, so make sure you crank it up and enjoy the ride!

The Apartments Announce That’s What the Music is For

I reckon there is never a bad time to slink into a good track from the Apartments, and Peter Milton Walsh has made our day with the announcement of a new record from the famed Aussie outfit. These days, Walsh is operating almost as a crooner, letting the weight of his voice carry the emotion atop nicely lightened musical arrangements. All the musical notes are striking, though they all seem wary of stepping on Peter’s toes, kind of hanging in the back with the shaker, light strum and snapping drum; the extra flourishes build in a deepened vibe, embracing the sort of somber aura that crests and cruises through the whole of the tune. Looking forward to hearing That’s What the Music is For; it drops on October 17th.

Stoked on This Reissue of the Apartments

apartamentoMy hat goes off to Captured Tracks; they do a great job with their new acts, but they really go for my heart with their reissues.  Earlier this year they tossed out a Stockholm Monsters reissue I quickly picked up, but now they’re prepping this one for The Apartments.  The on-again off-again project of Peter Walsh.  It’s a good representation of what was going on musically in Australia in the late 70s/early 80s, as Walsh had his hand various projects. Aside from the distinctive vocal delivery, I love the guitar sound on these tracks…usually built around an acoustic guitar.  The reissue is titled the evening visits…and stays for years, and it’ll be released on March 31st.

New Music from The Apartments

It seems that Australia is intent upon taking back pop music this year, and Chapter Music again is the team behind it all.  They’ve teamed up with Peter Walsh and his group the Apartments to release a new 7″.  It’s a single titled Black Ribbons, with two distinctly different mixes.  The one we have below drifts into the realm of twee-pop, but it does so with such beauty that you can’t help but swoon when you listen to this track.  I think we’ll look back on this in time and be thankful that the band took the time to craft such melodiously enchanting tunes.
