Playing Catch Up with Heliotropes

heliotropesIt’s a bummer I was out of town when this single first hit a week or so ago, but better late than never, right? Heliotropes really caught my ear with their first single, and this one doesn’t change my opinion, though it swings in a slightly different way. It’s got this huge nod to 50s sock hop, reminding me of sitting at home with my mother making breakfast…this is the nostalgic look back I can get behind. Their new album, Over There That Way, will be released on July 15th via The EndRecords, and you better believe I’m going to get my hands on it.

New Music from Heliotropes

heliotropesIf I were you, I’d listen closely to this new song from Heliotropes; it’s the sort of rock n’ roll with just the right pop sensibility and shimmering edges to be your favorite track for the next few weeks. It almost sounds like a dream pop single, but the band don’t enforce the typical bits of expansive reverb and atmospherics, instead offering up an honest track. The only downfall? It might be just 30 seconds too short, but that’s only because I want this song to last forever. Look for the band to release Over There That Way on July 15th via The End Records.

New Tune from My Jerusalem

I love a smoky voice, especially when you drape it over solemn tunes.  The latest tune from local Austin act My Jerusalem has that exact perfect vocal I look for, even including a nice little pop raise in the vocal during the chorus.  Otherwise, the track treads the water with a careful guitar line, some light flourishes of instrumental accompaniment and a thoughtful drum beat.  It’s great to see an Austin band crafting this sort of music, which definitely seems able to escape the confines of our local scene. You can hear this tune and others on the band’s upcoming record, Preachers, which is being released by The End Records on October 9th.

Fuzzed Out Rocker from Sleepy Sun

For their last effort, Fever, Cali’s Sleepy Sun got us off rocking with their own brand of psychedelic stoner rock, however, they still gripped tightly to a sunny side of songwriting with songs like “Rigamaroo.”  Their new effort, Spine Hits, aims to be a different beast, at least upon this first few listens.  You can grab the album on April 10th via The End Records, but for now just take a little listen to the first single. My ears sort of feel like there’s a bit of Brit-pop hiding behind the fuzzier elements of rock here, but I’ll let you be the judge. Check it!
