The Fresh & Onlys – Secret Walls EP

If you’ve been following the Fresh & Onlys over the last year or so, you probably saw that the Secret Walls EP lurked just around the corner.  Tim Cohen has been changing his own approach, and with that, so too goes the band’s sound.  This isn’t a bad thing by any means, unless of course you’re against change and progression.

“Secret Walls” feels like the culmination of the last few things Cohen and his friends have released.  Those hazy guitars have dispersed, though you’ll still find a cascading bit of angular guitar soloing coursing through the song.  What’s unique is that Tim sounds like some forlorn crooner, and he does it perfectly.  Such steps are slowly redefining the group’s sound, surely bringing along more fans as they go.

If you listen carefully to “Keep Telling Everybody Lies” then you’ll probably see a bit of a resemblance to a lost recording of some David Lynch movie opener, but Cohen’s vocals here revert to that warmth, something he’s now got great control over.  There’s hints of spaghetti western guitar, and a steady percussive pace keep the whole number afloat. Then the Fresh & Onlys go back to what they do best, progressing their sound, while maintaining their effortless cool.  “Do You Believe in Destiny” definitely rings aloud like a love track, and the Western sway of guitars gives it a bit of that California cool.  While in the past the band have managed to have this darkness coating their albums, this track portrays the sunnier undertones that live throughout the Secret Walls EP.

“Wash Over Us’ provides more of the same, cleaning the guitar sounds, as the group has done over the past several releases, and light piano tinkering continues to show a move towards a more pop-oriented spin for this short collection.  Don’t fret, “Poison Wine” brings back the element of shadowy haunts that the band has always pulled off so well. Cohen’s vocals seem to be hiding, almost creeping behind the rest of the band.  It’s not the most musical of tracks, which is perhaps its drawback, as this appears more as a construction of mood.  If that’s what they’re going for on this number, then they pull it off with great success.

Secret Walls seems like a brief foray into the group’s material, a stop-over while they continue to develop their sound.  It’s a great collection, and one that fans will fall in love with, but what’s more important is that it demonstrates a band that has such diversity in their writing that they can pretty much go anywhere they want to; when they go, I’m sure we’ll all adore it.

New Music from Fresh & Onlys

As the band alluded to in our interview last week, San Fransisco’s Fresh & Onlys have a new EP, Secret Walls, coming out on Sacred Bones April 26th.  Listening to this track, it’s a lot less energetic than their most recent effort, Play It Strange, which doesn’t really surprise me, as Tim Cohen, the front man for the band, has been slowing things down a bit with his solo material as well.  Give this track a listen, and prepare yet again, for another solid release from this band.  Perhaps it merely means they’ll soon have enough material for another record in 2012–I’m hoping so.

The Fresh & Onlys – Play It Strange

Let’s face it, a lot of the stuff coming down the pipe from San Francisco is going to be labeled with some sort of psychedelic tag, but as we’re all likely to see, a great deal of the bands are starting to mature, crafting stronger songs, music that’s meant to be deemed nothing more than that, music.  The new record from The Fresh & Onlys, titled Play It Strange, still holds hints of the psych-tag, but listening closely, you’ll surely notice the great strides this band has made with this effort.

“Summer of Love” probably doesn’t do much to move the band out of the San Francisco sound, but what it does show, upon first listen, is a cleaner sounding band, though there are still haunting effects on singer Tim Cohen’s vocals.  The guitars sound much sharper, the drums have a bit more clarity, and you’ve got a winner already.  Pushing forward, “Waterfall” seems to have the faintest hint of “oohs” secretly hiding in the far background, but that’s just one extra touch to make you fall in love.  The chorus is perfected, with the slightest echo as Tim sings “fall with me into the water,” but the greatest part is that spaghetti western guitar line beneath the group’s normal jangle.  This is perhaps one of the brightest moments on Play It Strange.

If you’re looking to see the band bring on something a bit more headstrong, look no further than “All Shook Up.”  You’ll get pounding drums in your ears as soon as you press play, highlighting one of the oft overlooked factors in the band’s success, their rhythm section.  While it may not be the strongest performance by Cohen, the intermingling guitar lines fit perfectly into the fuzzy bass lines and steady beat.  It’s reminiscent of classic 50s rock n’ roll, just cowering beneath a hazy fog of darkness, sort of like the cover art. It’s funny, but if you remove some of the recording processes from The Fresh & Onlys, you’d probably find a really solid pop band lurking somewhere.  “Fascinated” brings to mind various lesser-known Brit pop groups of the early 90s, but the band bring it out through a lens of their own.  The melody is catchy as you would expect, but you have to listen closely, digging deeper into the relevant nostalgia the group offer up to your ears.

While the majority of the songs on Play It Strange fall under the 3 minute range, there are some real slow-burners, none more special than “I’m a Thief.”  Cohen has this coy vocal walk through during the verses, pleading for his lover to remain faithful to her heart, which he claims to have stolen.  But, the chorus is a bit brighter, not lyrically, but emotionally, providing a bit of swing to the song, just before they close it out in instrumental fashion. Such songs clearly illustrate that the band has gone back further than the psychedelic era, drawing from more classic rock sounds as their influence, but they’re coating it in the dingy atmosphere of dive bars and seedy hole-in-the wall establishments.  It’s clear that The Fresh & Onlys are growing, and with the prolific songwriting of Tim Cohen, Play It Strange is just a sign of greater things to come.

New Tunes from Fresh & Onlys

freshFresh & Onlys have already released one album this year, and their ready to release more tunes for you on September 15th when Woodsist puts out their Grey-Eyed Girls record. It should be full of brooding rock with that deeply haunting voice that you’ll hear in the song “Invisible Forces,” which we’ll happily toss your way.
