The Reds, Pinks and Purples Share Heaven of Love
For some reason, I tend to take The Reds, Pinks and Purples for granted; the band, helmed by Glenn Donaldson, have quietly and consistently put out magical records year after year, and yet, I never tire of Donaldson’s voice. Even for such a distinctive songwriter, the evolution of Glenn’s work is always subtle, at least to my ears. For instance, this new tune keeps the guitar sound fairly light, allowing the synthetic nature to permeate the tune, building this textured groove beneath, then pulling back until you arrive at the chorus. Sure, structurally it’s similar to most acts, but the way it’s pulled off here feels like a refresh in the band’s sound…the sort that should have you rushing to pick up Acknowledge Kindness, out on April 24th via Fire.
I love to wrap up the year later than most, mostly because my real job always has me swimming against the current. But, nonetheless, I’ve got a solid list of the records I loved this year…and you’ll notice a lot of the same stuff as my peers, with maybe a few tweaks here and there to throw my own flare into it. Not really sure how to write an intro into something that seems so opinion-based, so here’s the list of records you should already have purchased if you come to this site frequently!
For some reason, this past week felt a little slow in terms of new music coming our way, and while I say that, we still cranked out over 20 tracks for you to peruse below. I was super excited for the new track from Low’s Alan Sparhawk, the first music we’ve heard from him since the passing of his Mimi; it was a beautiful piece that shows Alan off on a grand adventure. The Reds, Pinks and Purples snuck in some special new singles, so we’re grateful Glenn got those out into the world. I was stoked on new stuff from Austin’s Marry Cherry, not to mention a new Wut tune that came our way. Kicked off this playlist with my favorite tune, Teenage Tom Petties bringing in the hooks with “Night Nurse.” So, press play and see what you missed out on last week!
