Friday Album Streams: Gus Baldwin, Pink Chameleons, and More

The year is in full swing, and there are tons of great albums already hitting the streets, so wanted to throw my weight behind a few great releases. We’re all over the world today, with one of my favorite Austin artists, Gus Baldwin and the Sketch, getting their new LP out there. Then we bounce over to Finland with our friends Soliti releasing a new Pink Chameleons album. Jump over to Australia with Shrapnel then come home to NYC with Rosa Bordallo. Got those streams below for you.

Gus Baldwin and the Sketch Tell Us What the Freaks Say

Up until now, we’ve been presented with Gus Baldwin and the Sketch terrorizing your speakers; they’ve brought frantic pop to the masses, hyperactively rushing through quick bursts of punk. But, on their brand new single, the band open the door to reveal the chewy pop middle of their punk lollipop. It’s a bold statement amidst a rocking run of tunes, and while they do touch into some power ballad moments, there’s still that bit of tenacity lurking through the song’s end. This will give us all a chance to take a breath when we crank the Sketch all the way to 10 (11 is too cliche); they’ll also be touring the Eastern US throughout April!

Gus Baldwin and the Sketch Drop Slacker’s Prom

While the Winter weather tends to put me into my feels, there’s still a thirst for the energy that Gus Baldwin & the Sketch bring to my speakers. While they push forth in this new single, their typical tenacity is offset a little bit by the vocal delivery; Baldwin’s voice is a little calmed and hazy, setting up these perfect “oohs” that deliver a teaser hook. This is all perfect, as the energy pours through the speakers, punishing the cones as the drums thunder and riffs do their best to shred everything in their path. The Sketch will officially be out on January 25th of next year!

Gus Baldwin and the Sketch Prep the Sketch LP

Gus Baldwin and the Sketch are one of my favorite acts in the Austin scene. They have this sweat dripping tenacity that reminds me of an early Jay Reatard, rushing through songs as if possessed by some supernatural punk spirit. The song below’s been bouncing around for a minute, capturing, as best you can, the live energy of the group. This tune pops up with the news that they’re announcing The Sketch, their new album, dropping on January 17th, perhaps as the first best record out of Austin that year. Plus, a fun fact is you can play 7 Degrees of ATH Records with the band, but perhaps only I’m in on that story. I’ll save it for another day, while you crank the volume up!
