As the year nears its close, there’s a handful of releases that are worthy of your listening experience. We wanted to run through a couple of them so you had some stuff to enjoy as you browse Bandcamp on the first Friday of the month. As we poured through B. Gray’s photo coverage of Levitation, we also were able to get in some pretty solid tracks, even a premiere here and there, so a pretty busy week on our side. We did some Austin repping with that new Mugger tune on Friday, if you dare to let it rip! Dropped brand new stuff from Strange Passage, Marni and the Lions Constellation, all which are worthy of your listening. Plus, even got to stretch our taste a bit with the likes of Greg Weeks, Devin Shaffer and Magic Fig, so feel free to step outside the confines of today’s indie rock playlist!
In what seems like a continuous cycle of bad-assery, Meritorio Records has another great release on their line-up for the end of 202: The Wesleys Explosive Device EP. The first single from the release had a driving rhythm to it, but this go round, they’ve opened the song up a bit, letting the guitars kind of shimmer in the background, creating this psychedelic sway that moves the song; there’s something in that reminds me of a slightly more upbeat Clientele. Twisting their sound leaves listeners on notice that you’re going to get your moneys worth when you pick up the EP, with a little bit of energy and a little bit of pop, so be sure to grab a copy from Meritorio Records before the Novemeber 7th release.
There were some that covered more than us, and there were others that didn’t quite cover as much, but I’ll admit, feel like us only hitting 14 songs in a week was just scratching the surface of what came out last week. Still, we had Meritorio Records crushing the week’s end with new tunes from Strange Passage and the Wesleys. My personal favorite tune cranking out in under two minutes was that new jam from Teenage Tom Petties. Good to see the Apartments back too, so we ran the first single from their forthcoming LP, not to mention peeked back at the latest LP from The Fisheremen Three. It’s a quick run through this week, so make sure you crank it up and enjoy the ride!
As previously mentioned on these here pages, the heralded label of Meritorio Records is busy this week, and after an early jam, we’re back with the latest from the label…a new video from the Wesleys. This tune’s a bit of a pop punch, giving you this frenetic jangle kick with snappy drums and quick guitar rips. There’s something in the sound that feels like a balance between Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever and Ducks Ltd, with a mixture of the two feeling like the bands perfect balance. There’s a couple of little mini guitar solos that remind us of just solid guitar pop in their construction, and reminds me of the purity of the genre. Not to mention, its all strung together with this excellent video! Their new release, Explosive Device, is ready for your enjoyment on November 7th.
Apparently it’s that time of year when I just can’t help myself; I’m going full-time it seems, as we ran 28 brand new tracks this last week, plus some nods to albums we liked that dropped on Friday. We got some fresh premiere activity from the Wesleys and Max Blansjaar, then there were some recent favorites dropping in new stuff like Lightheaded, Neutrals and Autocamper. Me personally, I loved the new Gregor single, and that new CBVB plays into similar territory. This collection of songs, like my own catalog, is pretty random, though we always tend to aim for left of the left of the dial. Stream on.
If you’re looking for the perfect album to walk into Spring, might we suggest you put this debut LP from the Wesley‘s in your listening rotation? As a whole, the record’s pretty diverse; it’s like trying to decide between a path of Elephant 6 to your left or Dirtnap Records to your right, but the Wesleys said fuck it, we’ll play our own road. On the single below, they are definitely playing more towards the pastoral folk pop stylings, maybe even flirting with acts like Woods. The vocal harmonies hang perfectly in the air, and you get hints of groovy Aussie pop too with the way the acoustic guitar gets picked carefully atop that bobbing bass walk. The song’s within The Wesleys are the perfect blend between sharp power and melodic folk tendencies, leaving you with the perfect gateway into the changing of the seasons.
