The Wind-Ups Announce Live In Oakland LP
Two albums full of incredible rock n’ roll should have already made the Wind-Ups a staple in the community of those who worship rock, but in order to cement their legacy, the group had put it all on the line. So, what did they do? They recorded a riotous live set at the Golden Bull, putting down 17 songs in 28 minutes; a feat that would have made Jay Reatard super proud. Today, we bring you the news that the now infamous show is being released via Dandy Boy Records; you can grab it HERE. But, as in rock n’ roll realms, you need a bit of a visual, so the brand have a fresh video for the live version of “You’re Not That Cool.” Growling guitars, thumping rhythm and a quick blast to your ears, perhaps a reminder to also go check out the LP it draws from, Happy Like This.

Unfortunately, this is probably the last of Last Week’s Jams for 2023. Not because I don’t want to write about new tunes, but because, for some reason, folks just stop putting out music and let the world dwindle to a compilation of year-end lists. But, last week we still had tons of tunes to cover, with a whole lot of Austin represented. We revisited Fantastic Purple Spots, plus had brand new stuff from Big Bill, the Infinites and Fading Yellow. Got a bonus with one more Maureens track, which might be my favorite on their latest LP, and a fresh Club 8 hit that came out of nowhere. If you’re just looking for a playlist of new music, why not start here.
I don’t know what’s happened to the water in California as of late, but every tune coming out of the state is fucking brilliant. This track from the Wind-Ups just tore through my speakers as I didn’t heed the warning to not turn up to 11! Drums pound and the guitars just scream with distortion, but while I love that, and my eardrums still shake, the hidden gem comes in some of the vocal’s and their slide nod towards pop; I love how it captivates you with this thunderous wall of noise, then slips a note under your door to say “Surprise, its a pop song!” This feels like its going to rip; look for Try Not to Think on
