Don’t Worry Drop This Time Single

Something in the water has allowed the folks in the UK to seamlessly blend pop punk and emo into this new anthemic sound, and there’s no one doing it better than Don’t Worry this week. Their latest single off their new Idealism LP begins with this chugging guitar; it’s got a heavy riff that drives the energy, forcing the drums to justly emphasize every hit. The verses get delivered in a matter of fact manner, striding in their own fashion, almost working against the pace, but that’s what sets the chorus up for brilliance. The punchy switch from the velvety voice to an anthemic growl of self-reclamation has me singing at the top of my lungs. Specialist Subject Records will drop Idealism on July 18th!

Dream Pop from Mirrorball

Mirrorball is a fairly new band to the LA scene, though its two members have long been working in the musical community. But, their new project has this shimmering fragility that you can identify with almost immediately. The guitar chords seemingly dance in the distance, while there’s an electronic noodling that wavers in the foreground. There’s this forlorn vibe, almost making you weep as the song moves along…and I’m not even sad. They’ll likely draw some comparisons to Beach House, which are apt, but as a new band, there’s plenty of ways they can grow. For now, this single appears as part of Dangerbird’s Microdose Series.

Careful Pop from We Are Loud Whispers

weareloudTomorrow we’ll all get a chance to get our hands on the newest release from Hardly Art, We Are Loud Whispers.  The project of the duo, spread across Tokyo and Seattle was done via Internet, but don’t start to think that it will resemble that other mail service group.  Sure, there are some electronic touches throughout the record, Suchness, but this new single demonstrates just how careful the two are at crafting their songs.  This tune almost seems to quiet, but the underbelly of pop consistently rears its head, making the perfect listen for a quiet Monday afternoon.

Introducing The New Mendicants

Say what? You’re throwing two of my favorite songwriters, Joe Pernice and Norman Blake, together? Yeah, I’m totally in.  The two have teamed up to form The New Mendicants, doing some covers of each other’s work, plus a tune from INXS.  At this point, that’s about all there is to offer, though I hope that there’s more to come in the very near future.  The three recorded songs have been filed under the Australia 2013 EP, which you can pick up over HERE.  One can only hope that this INXS cover below is a good sign of wonderful things to come when these two are afforded time to craft a full album together.
