Hazy Sour Cherry Release Christmas Single

Having dropped the sparkling Strange World this past summer, Tokyo’s Hazy Sour Cherry share a brand new single just in time for the holidays. Sure, there’s the spiritual nod to Christmas (admittedly sans schmaltz), but you can almost excuse that, as the song feels more like a great introduction to the band’s playfulness. The riffs are sharp and uplifting, ringing in step with the dual vocal delivery that definitely feels like a family holiday singalong. It’s quick and snappy, and sets you up perfectly for the B-Side of the single, a wonderful cover of Dusty Springfield‘s “Stay Awhile.” It’s a great holiday season listen, all brought to you courtesy of Damnably Records.

Merry Christmas Share the Flying Trombone Sisters

If you haven’t heard of Tokyo’s Merry Christmas, might I suggest visiting their recent album The Night the Night Fell. They follow up that release with a new version of an old track, “The Flying Trombone Sisters.” I’ll be honest, this tune brings back all the old memories, listening to bands like Beulah and Architecture and Helsinki where they incorporate horns and frantic energy into the Elephant 6 sound popularized by Neutral Milk Hotel; it kind of sounds like a bastarized version of Arcade Fire, which only makes them all the cooler in my book. Give it some spins my friends.

New Tune from Nana Yamato

This might be America’s first taste of Nana Yamato, but the 20 year old artist has been crafting tunes from her bedroom in Tokyo since she was a young teenager. Today she announces her debut album for Dull Tools, the label run by Andrew of Parquet Courts, so you already get a seal of approval before even pressing play. Inside the song you get these careful little guitar lines dancing atop various samples that build in the song’s rhythm; it creates the perfect soundscape for Yamato’s crisp voice to coolly flow in and out of the melodic nooks and crannies. The video seems to pay homage to a studied craftsmanship, which makes sense considering how powerful a statement this track makes. Look for Before Sunrise on February 5th.

Brand New Cattle Hit

It’s not too often that bands from Japan break in the US, and that might never happen for Tokyo’s Cattle, but as long as they promise to right great hits, I don’t think anyone (namely myself) will care. The last I heard of the band they had released Somehow Hear Songs via Jigsaw Records, and it looks like the esteemed label has another offering for the group coming soon. This new tune sheds a little of the shoegaze vibe, instead just hitting you straight in the face with pure pop rock. Not sure when it hits or what its called, but you should definitely listen to this track today.
