Dreamy Track from Ultimate Painting

upWow.  This new Ultimate Painting tune is really something. The band is comprised of equal parts Mazes and Veronica Falls, though I don’t think you’ll find too many similarities to the work of either.  Instead, they’ve crafted a brooding song, gentle in its unfolding, holding tight to traditional pop stylings.  It seems like the perfect track to play as your night draws to a close; I feel like the emotional pull is best understood with minimal lighting. You’ll be able to grab the group’s self-titled debut album on October 28th from Trouble in Mind Records.

Two New Releases from Trouble In Mind: Soft Walls & Ultimate Painting

LP.jkt.templateIt’s been a great year for releases from Trouble In Mind Records, with my favorite being the Greg Ashley LP, but they’ve also got two new releases you need to keep your eyes on in the near future.  The first is from Soft Walls (album art to the left); it’s the project of UK-based Dan Reeves, and it sounds an awful like combining Fujiya and Miyagi with your favorite psychedelic band.  The debut of the project is called No Time, and it’s out on July 29th.  The other act, Ultimate Painting, is  hugely popular, if you’re going of the projects of those involved (members of Mazes and Veronica Falls).  Their self-titled debut comes out on October 28th, and I’ve been streaming the new single for the last few days.  Take a listen to these two great tracks, and look for the records soon.

Top 5 Trouble In Mind Bands at Austin Psych Fest

troubleYep…this week is the week.  We’ve got just a few days before we spend our weekend with the folks over at Austin Psych Fest.  I figured it’d be nice to do something a little different for previews this year, rather than just the traditional Top 5 Bands to See route.  So today I decided I’d bring you a highlight of all the acts at the festival that are on Trouble In Mind Records, either past or present.  I love the Chicago-based label, and while they definitely have a slew of psych bands, they’ve also got a reasonably diverse catalogue, all of which is pretty solid.  So, check out below to see the Top 5 TIM bands at the festival. We’ll see you out there. Read more

Psych Rock from Verma

TIM071_VERMA_SUNRUNNER_JACKETAs we draw closer to Austin Psych Fest, the genre’s been on my daily rotation.  I’ve been listening to all sorts of artists, but mostly the older acts I’ve not visited in awhile.  That being said, today I have reason to enjoy a new psychedelic tune from Verma, who’ve just signed on with Trouble In Mind Records.  The opening of this song really rides walls of feedback and noise until the bass line jumps in to steady the ship.  Throughout the tune vocals will pop up sporadically, but the feeling of this number is more about sonic exploration; it’s okay to jam out when it sounds this good. Their album, Sunrunner, will be out on May 27th.

Another Hit from 3108

3108_pressphotoJust a few weeks ago I brought you the infinitely catchy “Go to Hell” from 3108, the next release from Trouble In Mind Records.  Today, I bring you another such track, offering you a song that dwells in the same vein, though this one isn’t as immediately catchy.  I don’t mean to diminish the tune, as good things come to those who wait, but it’s simply different; after all, you don’t want your records to all sound exactly the same!  The driving rhythm is similar, but the pop sensibility doesn’t unfold as quickly, lurking for you in the back of the vocals.  This self-titled record will be available for you to purchase at your favorite store next week!

Upbeat Pop from 3108

3108_pressphotoFriday’s are supposed to be fun, right? Well, there’s probably not another track that I’ve had as much fun with as this new tune from London’s 3108. The synth based project is the work of Tyler Zypreksa, and this tune’s a short blast through the super fun zone.  It’s a song that pushes forward from the get go, and if you listen carefully you can hear some guitar blips cutting through the pulsating electronics. He’ll be releasing his self-titled album on Trouble in Mind Records on April 29th.  Enjoy this catchy number, and in the word of Zypreska “I’m going to heaven, you’re going to hell.”

New Music from Klaus Johann Grobe

LP.jkt.templateTrouble In Mind Records are really pumping out some interesting stuff these days.  They won me over already with the release of the Greg Ashley LP, and now they’ve got this new LP lined up from Swiss duo Klaus Johann Grobe.  Honestly, I don’t understand much of the lyrics, as they’re in another language, but the pulsating rhythm that’s being put forth is enticing for sure.  They even offer a nice bit of catchy hooks that come from those vocals, which also seem to be pushing the larger picture presented by the band.  You can grab their album Im Sinne der Zeit from the label on April 29th.

New Music from Proto Idiot

protoidiotThis tune has me so excited I can’t even tell you; I’m nerding out over here.  I first discovered Proto Idiot via his 7″ that he did with the hardworking folks over at Trouble In Mind Records; I even wrote about it on this here site. There’s now a new record out from the act, though no word yet on a physical release date. For those of you that like old school rock n’ roll, then you’re going to want to spend some of your time jamming out to this piece all afternoon…if not longer. It’s called & His Colony Boys, and it’s filled with hits.

Greg Ashley – Another Generation of Slaves

ashley-lpRating: ★★★★½

The past few weeks I’ve been listening to Another Generation of Slaves pretty non-stop.  When it came down to the arbitrary rating system, I wavered between a 4 and a 5, then settled on the now visible 4.5. While those numbers may mean little, all I can say as I write is that Greg Ashley has left us with a record that, at this point, is the best collection of songs I’ve heard this year.

“East Texas Plain” is a brilliantly solemn ballad.  It opens with a barroom piano while some understated percussion provides the perfect accent to Greg Ashley’s voice.  There’s something that goes into his vocal delivery that offers a familiarity to it; I keep thinking that he’s a more palatable Richard Hawley.  I particularly like how there’s just a little buzz in the recording too, providing some authenticity to what lays within.  Yet, Ashley doesn’t want to create something that weighs you down with one simple style.  “Brother Raymond” is a bluesy offering that brings a little bit of a rock n’ roll swagger to his creation.  It’s the perfect placement too…giving a bit of energy before bringing you to the best track.

It’s not that Another Generation of Slaves peaks entirely early, but I cannot get “Awkward Affections” out of my head.  There’s not too much to the actually lyrical content, but there’s a huge emotional pull going on inside.  Perhaps it’s the repeated séance of “you make me feel like shit/I wanna kill myself.”  If you’re looking for a song that begs to be played again and again, you should find a way to get your hands on this number.  However, the early tracks, like the three above all fall under 4 minutes, while it seems Greg saved his more laborious tracks for the latter half of the record.

The last few tracks on this record are all over 5 minutes, with my personal favorite being “Prisoner #1131267.” I love the piano work on this track; it sounds like there’s some classical training here, but at the same time, the way it’s used makes it seem like it’s just about to go out of tune; it buzzes and hums in your speakers.  It’s songs like these, which is pretty much every track, where you can hear an artist putting every bit on the line, musically.  Sure, Ashley might sound subdued at times, but other moments exist where he’s just belting out the notes, maximizing his passion.

I can’t really explain how much I love listening to Another Generation of Slaves.  There are songs that sound like cowboy piano ballads, then there are others with horns to jazz things up a bit.  There’s no telling which way Greg Ashley is going to take you on this listen, but I can assure you that no matter which way he goes, you’re not going to be let down one bit.

Creative Tune from Morgan Delt

morganThis latest jam from Morgan Delt has been floating around for a week or so, but please excuse me, we were on a break! And during that break I was able to spend a lot of time with various upcoming records, including this gem self-titled effort from Morgan.  It’s filled to the brim with all sorts of nods to California, both in the arena of psych and just traditional pop. It creates a listening experience that begs to have a listen from start to finish, and that’s the best way to take it all in.  For now, however, you can just enjoy this little number until the album comes out via Trouble in Mind Records on January 28th.
