The Chime School Share It’s True Video

Guess I’m reveling in the joys of pop music today, which I don’t mind one bit. This new Chime School video is another charmer from Andy Pastalaniec, fueled by these thumping drum snaps and churning jangles. I love that despite the song’s brief nature that things still seem fully developed, and even included several distinct moments that stand out from the jangles, like the classic sunny guitar solo in the early moments or the emphatic punch that comes in the song’s stomp about just after the minute mark; it’s not always easy to pack all those great moments into a song running under 2 minutes, but sure enough, its executed perfectly. The self-titled LP is due November 5th courtesy of Slumberland.

Slow Down Molasses Share I Need the Darkness Video

Felt like Wednesday is a solid day to get involved in some heavier sounds, so its a good thing there’s this jamming track from Slow Down Molasses banging around out there. It’s toying that careful line between post-punk and noise rock, though with the skate video added in here, it seems like its harkening back to sort of melodic post-hardcore vibes. It’s melodic, but brash, and just the faintest hint of pop sensibility hanging out in there to satiate those like me. If you’re digging what they’re putting down, the Canadian band drop their record Minor Deaths on October 8th via Divine Schism and Noyse Records.

Philip Frobos Shares Never Noticed Video

The perk of being an artist, I reckon, is that you can pretty much do whatever you want, whenever you want, on your own terms, which is how I imagine Omni’s Philip Frobos came about in wrapping up an album that also served as the score to his debut novel. This song seems perfectly penned as it’s meant to be an homage to the Atlanta bar scene and Frobos friends there. In the song, you get the sort of hazy lounge vibe, though the guitar notes do have a little bit of a jagged punk dance to them; perhaps envision it as an Omni song, slowed through the eyes of a bar regular, watching the world move slowly by through a glass of warm beer. Upset the Rhythm will be releasing Vague Enough to Satisfy on October 22nd.

Hovvdy Share Blindsided Video

Wanted to write about how much I enjoyed this new Hovvdy video; it’s really hard not to enjoy what they’re doing right now; the sounds are too too good. This very much just feels like home to me, and not just because they’re from Austin; it just has that familiarity to it, that vibe that only you and your closest friends could create together. I’d go into further details, but I’m grumpy because I like to follow rules, and this song had an “Embargo” on it until 9 am CST. So I don’t wanna write more. The song’s all that matters anyways, right? No need to copy and paste the press release. No need to link it to Phoebe Bridgers. Just listen to the song from their new album True Love, which is out Friday via Grand Jury.

Belaver Shares Mount Misery Video

Belaver‘s made these pages throughout the last few years, and with production duties handled by country musician Robert Ellis, you can guarantee that we’re going to get some solid sounds on Lain Prone. For me, there’s just something that maybe feels like it belongs in that late 90s Pacific Northwest scene, and you can definitely hear that in the brief little solo right around the 2:30 mark of the tune. With this video, there are definitely some risks, as 17 different artists from around the world helped to illustrate things, so you definitely get a stunning visual representation to go with the track. Lain Prone is out on October 22nd via Niles City Records.

Joshua Powell Releases Skeleton Party

Joshua Powell is dropping his latest record Skeleton Party out into the world today, and I wanted to celebrate that by backing him up with some love for this track, “Sad Boy at the Skeleton Party.” Sure, there’s some heavy riffs in this jam, which tie into Powell’s psychedelic inclinations, but his voice always transports me somewhere else; he reminds me of old school Brendan Benson the way he hits some of those high notes to bridge the rock with the melody. Feel like this hits all the Friday notes, kicking out the heavy riffs and still making things feel like there’s just the faintest hint of pop. If you dig, check out the whole LP; it drops today!

Black Marble Share Preoccupation Video

So I missed running this tune yesterday, so I figured I’d remedy my mistake by running it now. I’ve made clear my adoration with Black Marble, and this track is no different from those moments. I think Chris Stewart has really worked hard here to toy with his vocal delivery; he’s drawing you in, giving rise to little subtle bits of melody from the dark confines of his electronic work. Honestly, I haven’t heard anything from this record that I don’t like, so you can bet I’ll be grabbing a copy of Fast Idol, out on October 22nd via Sacred Bones Records.

Weakened Friends Announce Quitter

A few years ago, a show opportunity fell into my lap; I had the opportunity to book a primo venue for a day time SXSW show, but I had to do it in 48 hours before the show took place. Lucky for me, I know some people, and was fortunate enough to have Weakened Friends take the stage. They played in the early afternoon with such ferocity that it awoke everyone from their early SXSW slumber. Today the band announce their new album, Quitter, which is coming out via Don Giovanni Records; they’re doing it with the blasting pop rock jam that should get you as excited as I am for the LP. Sonia’s voice is phenomenal, and just the right amount of catchy hanging in there. Just turn it up super loud and thank me later!

Japan Review Share Kvetch Sounds

What on Earth is this beautiful sound coming from the latest Japan Review single? Immediately my ears filled with these discordant angular riffs, just heavily jangling, bouncing notes off one another to create this dense background of anxiousness. Moments later, synth work rolls into the picture, polishing the song like a fine gem, letting the melodic vocals calm your nerves as drums snap at the mix from below. Every sound works against each other, and in crashing together, they mix and leave you blanketed with this sublime piece of artful noise. I’m totally floored by this tune, and hoping that the whole of their new LP, Kvetch Sounds, lives up to this track; it’s out on October 29th via Reckless Yes.

Parker Longbough Announces Off Front Street

It’s been a busy year for Parker Longbough, releasing an album and an EP, but we’re not even done yet, so we’re pleased to inform you that he’ll be releasing another record, Off Front Street. One of the great things about Longbough is his storytelling, and its what fills this record (and song), with his lyrical work resembling Doug Martsch to a certain degree, making the mundane leap from the speakers. This track has a circular nature to it, musically speaking, with this guitar ringing in and out of the mix, allowing Longbough to focus on his storytelling while the song buzzes behind him; it’s punctuated by this emphatic drum work, primarily on the cymbals, punching up the hooks as you go through. You can file this tune somewhere between the Pacific Northwest of the late 90s and Elephant 6. Off Front Street drops on October 22nd via Wilderhood Music.
