Snowy Band Share Call It A Day

Right now, I couldn’t think of a better way to begin my day than to curl up next to this new track from Snowy Band. There’s just something about Liam’s delivery that’s soothing, whether its the tone or just the natural volume, it feels like wrapping up in a weighted blanket. But, while the song’s mostly working around the light strum crashing into discord and heavier guitar work, the chorus is this sublime little treat you’ll want to put in your pocket and save for a rainy day; you get this moment for its first time right at the 2:30 mark…that’s when I became well and truly smitten. Alternate Endings is out on August 27th via Osborne Again/Spunk Records.

Joyer Share Cranky Boy Video

Perhaps you’ve been listening to a lot of Hovvdy the last few years. Maybe you even like the old Jade Tree catalog. Lucky for you, there’s this new tune from Joyer, which to me reminds me a lot of a mix between the two. It’s got that sort of Owls vocal to it, which is where I pulled the JT reference, but it very much feels like that slowcore emo, the sort where emotion is pulled from stretching notes of the guitar around slow-fashioned drum work. That pacing allows for the band’s cinematic nature to come to light, which is perhaps due to the fact that the Sullivan brothers both studied film in school; it’s one of the key influences on their album, Perfect Gray, which is out September 24th via Julia’s War.

Icarus Phoenix Shares Anthem Video

By now, you’re likely aware of my adoration for Drew Danbury’s Icarus Phoenix project; he’s been dropping singles left and right as he prepares for the release of the new LP. This run through, you get a slight heavier punch in the getting, offering up an almost rock vibe, though it’s quickly peeled back for the voices, allowing for the intimate swoon that’s made Danburry’s work so enchanting since I hit upon the self-titled Icarus Phoenix LP. There are definitely some vocal notes here that remind me of Clem Snide, so I’m definitely inclined to just sit here and fawn, but I’ll let you decided. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Drew keeps this a family affair, allowing his 12 year old nephew create the video here. Look for the new LP via Telos Tapes on September 10th.

You Thant Share Fa$t Food Experience Video

Sometimes, the indie scene gets a bit stale. One artist gets big, then everyone wants to mimic the style, so it becomes watered down and boring (see Mac Demarco/Phoebe Bridgers). But, that’s why I’m super into Sweden’s You Thant. Imagine being super into the Refused, showing adoration political themed pseudo-hardcore. Then, you’re like, you know what, fuck it, I love Kraftwerk and New Order too, so why not throw it all in a blender and make our own sound. This, my friends, is what you get from You Thant, and their hot tune “Fa$t Food Experience.” The beat’s propulsive, pushing you running through sterile streets of capitalist worlds, but the vocals from Julius Gudmundsun seem to growl at you, rallying you to join him in his anger. Definitely a fresh take on the indie sound; you’ll find this tune on Dinner for Two, out via Samjan Records.

True Blossom Share Cruel Video

This past year True Blossom released their In Bliss LP, a collection of pop influences from disco to synth to dream pop all collected into a cohesive record. But, in case the band were drifting from your consciousness, they’ve shared a brand new video today for the album’s standout, “Cruel.” This is precisely what I’m talking about when referencing the band’s ability to blend genres and influences; it feels like it could easily be dance-floor ready, but has this sort of coy playfulness in the bounce that keeps it subtle and delicate in its presentation. Sit back and enjoy this video directed by Kate Hinshaw, and if you feel so obliged, you can still grab the band’s cassette from Citrus City.

Clear History Announce Debut 12″

Looking for something way left of the dial, then you’re going to want to put your headphones on and turn up this track from Berlin’s Clear History. They’ve crafted this buoyant bit of post-punk, fueled by wonky rhythms and these angular guitar chords that seem to sprawl all over the tune. You get the stationary vocal delivery here, as is the recent fashion, but you get it with a little call-and-response, adding an extra bit of hook-laden flare. I love the song’s end, as the band get frantic and fun, almost like they’re channeling the B-52s at their most spastic. If you dig it, the band are releasing Bad Advice Good People on November 5th via Upset the Rhythm.

Central Heat Exchange Share Almost to You

We’ve previously written about the group project Central Heat Exchange, featuring members of Varsity, Living Hour and Daphne Tunes…but I’ll be open here…this one gets a little close to home as the vocals come from our friend Santi of Daphne Tunes. I love the song’s construction, feeling like it’s brimming with textural heaviness, while still seemingly floating in nature due to Santi’s vocals here; he’s got this magical touch that seems to feather every note, providing this endless coziness. The video, whether intentional or not, seems to kind of capture the band’s spirit, though perhaps not capture the band. It’s a bunch of friends, playing and skating and doing their thing, much like the members of Central Heat Exchange accomplished in crafting this LP. The self-titled album is out on September 10th, courtesy of Sunroom/Citrus City/Birthday Cake Media.

Motorists Share New Vainglorious Single

I’m really hoping folks get captivated by the work of Motorists, as they seem to be building the components to a most excellent LP. Their second single has this song that feels like its stranded in musical territory, picking up psychedelic licks while also employing some circular jangles; the rhythm section keeps the song pushing forward too, bobbing all along. All that before I even mention how much I love Craig Fahner’s voice on this jam; he’s got this knack for throwing out a vocal hook that feels pop and punk at the same time, and I can’t help but swoon, especially when bassist Matt Learoyd adds some backing texture. They’ll be dropping their Surrounded LP on September 3rd via Bobo Integral/Debt Offensive/We Are Time.

Sonny & the Sunsets Share Palm Reader Video

I took one of those rarefied family vacations, heading to the beach this last week, so I wasn’t able to properly wrap up last week, where I most certainly would have shared the latest video from Sonny & the Sunsets. This is one of my favorite tracks on New Day with New Possibilities (which also dropped while I was tanning), hitting home because of the intermingling of sliding guitar lines and the sunny pop vibes that are always present in a Sonny Smith release; you might have heard a non-country version on Antenna to the Afterworld, so this gives you a different glance at Smith’s writing process of late. The new LP is out now via Rocks in Your Head Records.

Curved Light Announces Spirit Echo

Five years in the making, it’s time for Austin’s Curved Light to release the debut LP, Spirit Echo. Our first listen shows Peter Tran coming to grips with the collective past, present and future, with loops and beats battling for supremacy, competing for relevance in the listener’s ear. At times, it might feel disconcerting, as if nothing’s distinct enough to really make its own rise to the top. But, then compile that with the visual imagery and poetic inclusion of the video, uniting all the sounds for a common goal…a push forward for Tran and his sound. Spirit Echo is out on October 1st via Gentle Reminder.
