Ducks Unlimited = Ducks Ltd + New Tune

Not sure what the reasoning, though I’m assuming its legal issues, but Ducks Unlimited have decided to change their name to Ducks Ltd. What? Who cares? Well, for one, I do. But also, the name change comes with the signing to Carpark Records. That also comes with an added bonus, as the label will be reissuing the delightful Get Bleak EP (which I’ve raved about before), only with added bonus tracks. The tune features below features their solid jangling rocks, that sort of Billy Elliott toe-tapping fun, though I think the calming nature of the vocals is finally sinking in with more listens; it was always upbeat indiepop, but that soft underbelly is definitely resonating with this jam. Seriously, more people should make tunes like this. The reissue drops on May 21st.

ME REX Share Heart of Garbage Video

I’ve really been enjoying this new track from ME REX, as the band seem to sort of resemble a strange blend between Martha and We Were Promised Jet Packs…though I’ll admit this outfit show a bit of restraint. The rhythm section definitely drives the song forward, pounding on the drums as the band kick forth, featuring feuding vocals that scream ambition and joyous reflection. If you’re digging this song, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a handful of others from the band’s Triceratops/Stegosaurus EP, which is currently available from Big Scary Monsters.

Michael Beach Shares Metaphysical Dice Video

Australia’s Michael Beach just dropped his latest LP, Dream Violence, and now we’re treated to the really creative video work of Sophia Mero for “Metaphysical Dice.” When listening to this tune, its really all about the way that they song is textured, and it depends on what your ear draws you towards. At times, the incredible bass work is just driving the song, pulsing and bobbing and you can’t pull away. But, as you focus there, the jangling guitars in the distance start to gain more resonance, seemingly rising through the mix to take control. Through it all, Beach has this fascinating vocal delivery; it’s like a call to prayer, powerfully stretching the melody across the entirety of the tune, beckoning you to heed his words. If you dig, the LP is available via Goner Records!

Alex Riegelman Shares Animal Ending Video

This past February our friend Alex Riegelman, known about town for his role in Big Bill, dropped this incredible “Animal Ending” single; he’s now sharing the video version of the tune. The video encapsulates Alex’s playful side, featuring a hunter hunting and being hunted, or at least that’s what we might be led to believe. Musically, I’m still in love with this song, and I honestly have no way to really put his sound into words; it feels like something Paul Simon would be super into creating, but only if he was in some sort of death match with Nick Lowe…it’s all bright melodies and light-hearted euphoria, but with an uppercut of crunchy riffs and rock n’ roll flare. Come on over and dip your toes into the visually weird world of Mr. Riegelman, and stick around for the great tunes…with hopes of more on the horizon. Choose your streaming source HERE.

Phantom Wave Share Visualizer for Resin

A few weeks back, New York’s Phantom Wave dropped their new album, Wilds, with one “Resin” getting a little video treatment for you today. I’m really drawn to the band’s sound, as it seems to kind of mash two great sounds together, namely a blend of 90s college rock and shoegaze. You’ll hear the swirling mix of heavy guitars and distortion, sprinkling through your speakers like the sparkling dots in the song’s background. But, Ian Carpenter’s voice has this earnestness, this hopefulness that makes you feel like there’s promise on the other side of those heavy sounds; it’s the sun breaking through to guide you in your endeavors. Just really appreciate the way they’re able to mix the two sounds so well. If you dig what you hear, be sure to check out the whole of Wilds.

Pink Chameleons Announce Peace and Love

Toady we bring you great news, with Finnish outfit Pink Chameleons returning to the fold with their debut LP, Peace and Love. Those of you that were into garage rock will want to lend a close ear here, as the band have a banger of a tune. It’s all fuzzy riffs and nods to power pop hooks that leave you with anthemic sing-along choruses you won’t get out of your head. The pounding drum work feels like the band’s marching up to your door clapping hands to the beat and ready to drag you outside for a day in the sunshine! Infectious and fun, you’ll be stoked to get your hand on the band’s debut album, dropping May 21st via Soliti Music.

PACKS Share New TV Video

Let’s be clear, I’m a huge fan of this PACKS video; I love joyous moments, whether they’re performed or not, so just the sheer amount of smiling and laughter here is more than welcome. As for the song, it definitely feels close to the likes of Cherry Glazer, flirting with sort of garage rock sensibility but presented in a slightly new fashion, tugging on dreamier notes. The plodding drum feels super heavy, like you’re stomping in quicksand, but that muddiness works well with Madeline Link’s soaring pipes, curling her pop sensibility around each note. The Toronto band releases Take the Cake on May 21st via Royal Mountain/Fire Talk.

Evan Greer Shares the Tyranny of Either/Or Video

This great video from Evan Greer for “The Tyranny of Either/Or” dropped yesterday for Trans Visibility Day; I failed her, as I mostly work at night and didn’t see it until putting my kid down; I’m sorry. But, this song has so many levels to it that I can’t even really begin to explain. First, it’s great pop punk; it does what great pop does, putting an important lyrical message in a pop package for the masses. Second, the video is a history lesson, an important one on the continuing struggle for trans folk. Third, I teach kids, several of whom are celebrating their own trans lives, and it pains me to know how alone they are in virtual learning, so all I can do is encourage them to use their pronouns and refuse to deadname them if I need to talk to their parents; I’ve got to be on their side. So yeah. The song rips. It’s on the new LP, Spotify is Surveillance, out April 9th via Get Better Records and Don Giovanni.

CLAMM Share Beseech Me Video

For those all about pigeonholing Melbourne’s music scene (yes, myself included), don’t forget to listen to CLAMM…in order to destroy both stereotypes and eardrums. When this song begins, the rhythm section immediately has you on edge, grinding your teeth, feeling nervous; skittering guitar licks don’t do much to settle you before Jack Summers begins his vocal tirade. Going through, I actually tend to gravitate towards the band’s use of space in the song; it allows for them to really keep that propulsive groove while letting the song and listener breathe. It feels like you’re on some runaway mine cart tunneling through the dark caverns of Earth, like Indiana Jones with a death wish; to be honest, that feels pretty great. The group release Beseech Me on April 9th via Meat Machine.

Dry Cleaning Drop Unsmart Lady

This Friday, 4AD will release the much anticipated Dry Cleaning LP, New Long Leg. Their last single before the record drops opens up with striking discord; you feel as if the band are set to rip through your speakers. But, as always, Florence Shaw stands there, like a lighthouse drawing the band towards safety and security; she’s got this chilling indifference while the band works furiously around her. At this point, its hard to tell what I love more here, the throbbing bass groove that vibrates your soul or the band’s great performance in the video; it’s like yeah, this song rips, lets hear it again. Grab/stream the New Long Leg everywhere Friday!
