The Reds, Pinks and Purples Share The Record Player & the Damage Done

Glenn Donaldson’s The Reds, Pinks and Purples have a new LP on the way, and rumor has it that it’s flying off shelves. Take one listen below, and you’ll hear the eternal pop sensibility that Donaldson brings to the fold. There’s a light strum fighting against an angular guitar stepping in and out; the drums have this steadying stomp, keeping the song’s balance…all the way to the push towards higher vocal notes. Oddly, the song is kind of stepping on its own toes, with the tune’s thematic reference, discussing the passionate affair of collecting great pop records, of which we have not doubt that Uncommon Weather will soon find its place in that pile. The new LP drops on April 9th via Tough Love/Slumberlandand the damage will be done.

Proper Nouns Announce Feel Free

I’ll admit, I’ve grown a bit weary with your everyday indie rock brand, so hearing this new track from Proper Nouns really kicked the door down and let the rock back into my life. Spencer Compton might not feel it yet, but he’s got an uncanny resemblance to my man-crush Ted Leo, both in his distinctive vocal hiccup and the way he brandishes his guitar; its mapping out that boundary between punk and pop. His voice has this natural swing to it that just sets up the song; it has this natural rising action, topped off with this cool swaggering climax that’s perfect if you turn it up real real loud. I didn’t know how much I needed this until it was right in front of me. Feel Free is being released on April 23rd via Phone Booth Records.

Dark Tea Share Deanna Video

With another self-titled Dark Tea album on the horizon, I’m putting my headphones on up loud and indulging in the musical journey that Gary Canino always seems to take us on. Luckily, the band are also doing it with a little nod to LA noir films, so you get both the visual journey and the musical journey. I totally love how this song walks this line between Malkmus and Woods, offering both nostalgic wordplay and present day musical tendencies, spooning with one another. This paints the picture of an album that’s begging for that complete immersion, so prepare yourself to get lost inside what’s in store; Dark Tea drops on April 30th via Fire Talk.

Comfy Share Breaking the Habit Video

We’re just about a month removed from the release of the very excellent Volume For, the latest LP from Connor Benincasa’s project Comfy. He gathered up friends from various acts like Remember Sports, Another Michael and more to record the album…and while its been out for a few weeks, there’s now a great video to accompany standout track “Breaking the Habit.” The video seems to be all about the adventurous day of a lonesome robot, though shooting off into the galaxy as an ending seems fitting, and perhaps the happy ending we all seek. This song’s got staying power too, from the jangle pop meets emo riffs, to the “oohs” that provide that melodic kickstart to your heart. What a listen! It’s available now via Dadstache Records.

Sook Yin Lee & Adam Litovitz Announce Jooj Two

This song’s been bumping around for the last few days, and I’ve been battling rolling blackouts (not coastal fever) getting through emails and what not. But, Sook Yin Lee & Adam Litovitz have a new LP coming out via Mint Records, which is always as reliable as Lee’s creativity. With jooj already under their belt, Lee took control of the jooj two tracks while Litovitz fulfilled other responsibilities until his passing. Lee’s voice is one of those darkly distinctive voices; you can feel her haunting every corner of this track, accented by careful beats and loops as her solitary figure walks about town in the accompanying video. Jooj two is out on April 9th.

Colin Miller Announces Hook EP

There’s a certain brand of artist that make you feel like you’re capable of penning your own heartfelt songs, and on Colin Miller is one such artist. Sitting here listening to the lead single from the forthcoming Hook EP, and I feel like I could sit down and write something as strikingly beautiful and personal as this; I’d record it on a 4 track, giving just a faint hint of tape hiss that establishes bedroom intimacy between myself and the listener. Everyone would be charmed and rush to play my songs on repeat, put them on mixes and buy all my stuff on Bandcamp Fridays! But alas, that’s just how Colin Miller made be feel, like I could do it too, like I could be in on the craft. But alas I can’t, so I’ll do the next best thing and pick up the new Hook EP from Oof Records on March 19th.

Marriage at Nevers Shares When I Hear You Video

You’ve likely heard me rave about the Lovely Sparrows, the songwriting project of Shawn Jones. But, like many an artists he’s turned his attention to a new project during COVID titled Marriage at Nevers; it’s a collaborative effort with his friend Derek Van Gieson, who has some renown of is own with Fantagraphics. The video alone is worth your 3+ minutes, I assure you; it’s all the work of Van Gieson. Musically, its this rolling blend of soft psychedelia, featuring cascading guitars and a steady rhythmic stomp that inches the song along. There’s a particular guitar sequence that really makes you feel like its dancing demonically around your ear drums, but perhaps I got lost in the visuals! Plus, the entire album features vocals from other sources like Austin artist Dana Falconberry. They’ll release their self-titled album on March 19th!

Borito Share Song for Dawn Video

We first caught wind of Borito due to the band’s connection to Bones Garage (who we’ve happily helped get records out into the world for), and this tune should warrant some adoration on your behalf. The video is filled with candid photos of the band traipsing about, capturing this innate playfulness that shines through in this song. I mean, if you’re not tapping your toes in step with those guitar cuts, then perhaps you need to turn this song up a bit louder! Yael’s voice also has this sort of hip dreaminess, like she’s cooler than all of us and she knows it! Congratulations are in order too, as the band drop What We Have Now today too, along with the fun video!

Sasha and the Valentines Share Witches Video

We tried to hip you to Sasha and the Valentines when they dropped their Green EP back in 2019, and now that there is a new LP on the horizon, we reckon you ought to hear for yourself why we’re so excited. I think it’ll be easy to draw some comparisons to early Beach House, particularly if you’re pulling your ears close to the blossoming of Sarah Addi’s vocal performance. Sure, those similarities can’t be denied, but I love the way there’s a bit more of a pull back on the reigns from the Austin outfit; they’re kind of allowing that sort of expansive sound to roll out across the great Texas landscape, rather than force hooks down your throat. Listen to the sound flow, like the smoke from the end of this song, billowing through out your speakers and into the great musical universe. So You Think You Found Love will be out on April 16th via Oof Records.

Dry Cleaning Announce New Long Leg

Back in November the indie cognoscenti were raving about “Scratchcard Lanyard,” and now Dry Cleaning finally have the announcement of their debut LP, New Long Leg. With it comes a new single, again taking indie rock on their own terms. Musically, it begins with this sort of propulsive dancefloor rhythm, though Florence Shaw’s vocal delivery hold things back, almost dragging the song to a slower pace so that the band supporting her can craft and manipulate sounds. The rhythm section continues their movement, but the guitar work begins to take on a more post-punk sort of explanation; it reminds me a lot of the sonic soundscapes being crafted by Wire in their later releases, angular guitars dancing about in contrast to the rest of the song’s vibe. Definitely an interesting take on modern rock n’ roll, for which I’m 100% in favor; they’re debut drops on April 2nd via 4AD.
