CLAMM Sign to Meat Machine

Started off my morning with one of those angst ridden ideas in my head about “teacher privilege” (a rant for another day), so I was browsing through, trying to get my angst out, and here’s this great new jam from Melbourne trio CLAMM. They’ve just signed on with Meat Machine to release their debut LP, Beseech Me; you can check the video below to hear what they’re all about! It opens with this squalling wall of guitars, sort of muddy in nature, which I actually love, as it doesn’t really build much pop sensation at all (I needed that this morning!). They smash through the song at breakneck speed, delivering vocals with stabbing screams that rip through your speakers. Cathartic in every way; the LP drops on April 9th.

The Reds, Pinks and Purples Announce Uncommon Weather

Every list that really mattered at the end of 2020 had You Might Be Happy Someday by the Reds, Pinks & Purples at the top of their list (my personal list too!); it looks like the band will stake their claim to that same acclaim in 2021, as today they announce a new album, Uncommon Weather. Contrasting guitars jut against each other from the open, one ringing melodic and true, while the other seems intent on butting up against it with its angular discord. Fading away, it allows Glenn Donaldson to steady the ship, coolly feathering his vocals across the front of the mix, softly soothing slackers like Bob Pollard singing a bedtime lullaby. Perhaps my favorite bit survives beneath that voice; it recalls the timelessness of Sarah Records or even early K Records, with DIY jangles recorded to tape in solitude. This new record has a great new home too, with Slumberland Records slated to drop the LP on April 9th.

Dogs for Friends Drop King’s Dog Video

At the very tail end of last year, Dogs for Friends dropped their I’ll Pet You 4 Ever EP; perhaps not my favorite title ever, but dammit if the songs weren’t just really incredible. Today they drop their video for standout “King’s Dog,” so give a listen. It begins with this heavy haunting, dripping over this quietly propulsive beat; throughout the first minute or two you can hear these light guitar licks dancing about, but they finally kick in near the two minute mark, opening up the song to this divine bit of pop music. Felt like a really good way to start off the Tuesday morning.

Rachel Love Releases Primrose Hill Video

You might remember Rachel Love when all of us were clamoring to get our hands on one of the few copies of her band Dolly Mixture‘s remastered works a few years ago. Now, Rachel’s out on her own, and she’s offering up this really powerful pop ditty. It’s the sort of pop that borders on the edges of classic doo-wop and chamber pop; it’s the super hard not to get swept up in those string arrangements and light vocal flourishes (which feature her son David btw!). I have a feeling this song will be playing over here for the rest of the day! Look for Primrose Hill to drop later this summer via Cow Chow Records.

Dark Tea Announces Self Titled LP

It’s been a couple of years since the release of the Dark Tea‘s last LP, and now we’ve got news that a brand new self-titled effort is on its way this April. Amidst all my jangles and post-punk tendencies, I’m still drawn to the balladeers that encourage that sense of Americana longing. Gary Canino’s voice on this single just seems like he’s out there with hope on the horizon, giving himself up to the graces of the world. On the surface, it’s a great pop song, but if you want to dig in deeper, just listen for the all the careful arrangement work put into the background of this tune; it’s something that Gary put great care into when recording this latest LP, grabbing 20+ musicians to aid in fleshing out his songwriting. Damn, its hard to turn this song. Dark Tea will be out on April 30th via Fire Talk.

Pansy Share Woman of Your Dreams

I’m really intrigued by Vivian McCall, both in regards to her recording project as Pansy, and her journey of transitioning, which is the thematic element that runs central to her debut LP. Musically, the song hits on all the soft spots of my heart; it has this simple beat looped in to give you a bit of a toe-tapping stomp, though it also seems to sort of bring in elements of classic rock n’ roll…the sort my mom played non-stop when I was a kid. Just imagine a really young Elvis hanging out and recording in a bedroom on a 4 track, and well, that’s what you get here…and you’ll love it! This record should be out at soon via Earth Libraries.

Nervous Twitch Drop Alright Lads Video

Feel like Nervous Twitch are taking me to task here, but their sound is so joyous that I don’t even mind that they seem to be mocking those rock show know-it-alls! Just listen, ask yourself if you know it all, then apologize and be better! As for the song, the band Leeds bunch just hammer away at this classic pop rock feel, somewhere between Elvis Costello and the Go-Gos, with hints of punk and classic girl-group pop swirling about your ears. It’s got just enough sugar to make you feel sweet, but an underlying bit of attitude (atop the band calling out those know-it-alls!) gives it just enough of an edge to make it a breezy jam you’ll want to spin at your next party! Tele Novella Share Paper Crown Video

As anticipation builds for the release of Merlynn Belle, Tele Novella share one final video/single to entice your ears before it drops. And no offense to Jason here, but this track is completely Natalie’s show; her vocals are right in the front of the mix, showing off this insane range. Steady pop notes rise to meet quivering high notes, then dropping right into the max in this incredible playful manner; there’s also an emphatic punch that’s set up in the chorus, riding along the gallop of the drums. While I’ve always enjoyed the work of the band, this whole LP is starting to really really special. Kill Rock Stars will drop it for us all on February 5th.

Nightshift Share Power Cut Video

If ever anything was going to save us from drab Mac Demarco cover bands, I hope to God that its Nightshift. They’re crafting this brilliant blend of post rock and pop music, almost creating this musical seance that hypnotizes as it pushes you forward. It very much begins by offering you this sort of no-wave meets indiepop groove, slinking about with this tribal rhythm and Eothen Stern’s vocals haunting the song like a mysterious ghost. As it moves, guitar lines seem to walk up and down this imaginary staircase, building layer upon layer, blanketing listener in this dense wash of pop sensibility. Plus, they’re not afraid to freakout a little, as you see in the song’s back half…all pointing to a band making up the rules as they go forward. If you want to get “off the grids” then you’ll want to be on board when the band drop Zoe on February 26th via Trouble in Mind.

Swansea Sound Selling Their Soul on EBay!!!

They promised us they’d do it, so they up and wrote a song about selling their souls on EBay. Swansea Sound (members of Catenary Wires/Pooh Sticks) have recorded their smash hit single, putting their heart and soul into the recording (it was pressed into the vinyl!) and pressing to a super limited run of 5 7″ copies. Four go to members of the band, and the final one is currently being auctioned on EBay; you can bid HERE(it was 20 pounds when I posted this!). Plus, they made a fun teaser video, but be sure to stick through to the end, as the band make an emphatic appearance just as the song closes in bang-out fashion! If anything, stick around for the delectable pop treat at the 30 second mark!
