Jordan Paul Shares Archetype X

This morning, I’m really being taken by voices, and Jordan Paul has one of that I can’t seem to escape. It’s got this fragility to it, while also having this strange familiarity, like a mix between Buckley and Drake. Behind him is this open space that really lets him carry the song purely on the back of his pipes. Now, that does’t mean there’s not a nice bit of arrangement working through here, giving him just the right amount of angelic lift in all the right spots. The Canadian musician will be releasing Already Gone shortly, so enjoy a nice little settling mood with Jordan Paul.

Smut Announce Power Fantasy EP

Smut encapsulate the perfect blend of pop and rock, which should put fans of acts like the Beths or Best Coast on notice. Things open up on the purely pop tilt here, not even hinting that there’s a heavy-hand lurking; it’s all shiny and bubblegum. But, right around the 1:30 mark pedals get pushed and the rock is unleashed. It’s a nice little turn, giving the tune a nice edge that enables the hook to push right on through the speaker. Feels like good old fashioned college rock, so a lot of folks are going to be super excited about Power Fantasy when it drops via Bayonet Records on November 20th.

Spirit Ghost Shares If Only Video

Spirit Ghost just recently released Singles Vol I, and today we’ve got the video version of standout track “If Only” to share. To me, this song feels very much like Austin; it’s got that slow meandering honky-tonk vibe, much like the much-missed Strange Boys. Alex Whitelaw’s vocals seem to have that magical knack to capture melancholy and bottle it up and sell it as melody. Every so often, you get a nice little musical uptick, just a heavier hand on the cymbals and a bit of punch in the volume, and the song brims with its own take on Western balladry. The video uses black and white imagery to help affirm the song’s natural timelessness. Hope you’ll dig in deeper here; grab the EP!

Nervous Twitch Share Keeping Faith in Something Video

Been a minute since we’ve heard from Leeds outfit Nervous Twitch, but we’re getting word that the band will be releasing a new LP in early 2021…and we’ve got a sneak peak! The first single teases you with an off-kilter stomp and steady spoken vocals. Suddenly, those guitars shimmy into the picture, the drums move into a roll and things pick up pace so we’re all having a blast as we’re bopping along. They have this knack for offering sugary punk ditties that are undeniably fun, which, on a personal level, has me really excited for a new LP, which we’ll know more about soon…for now, enjoy this tune courtesy of Reckless Yes Records!

The Boys With the Perpetual Nervousness Return with New LP

Please label this under things I desperately needed but had no idea were coming…a brand new LP from the Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness. The band, a duo split between Spain and Scotland, charmingly won me over with their debut, Dead Calm. It was a this perfect amalgam of all realms of pop, past and present; it seems like they’re not straying too far from that with their latest release, as you can hear in the single below. It’s got huge harmonies shared between the two singers, giant sweeping pop chords that ring out brightly in the mix and just enough of a beat to keep things rocking along. They’ll release Songs from Another Life in February of next year via Bobo Integral.

Still Corners Share Crying Video

With the first single from the forthcoming Still Corners tune, I wasn’t quite sold. I’ve been a huge fan of the band forever, so I’m not sure what it was, but on this new single…this is what I love about the band. There’s this heavy bass like beat and a tamped drum stomp, all allowing Tessa to drape her vocals gently on top of the mix. You’ll hear a faint whistle, and slowly the textures start to build, almost like a groundswell of little pop nuance. It’s this perfect little care of the negative space, knowing when to fill it, when to let it be; it’s a gift few bands have truly mastered, so I’m glad to see it still hanging about in the duo’s repertoire. Their new album the Last Exit will be out in January via Wrecking Light Records.

Coral Share I Just Want You Cause You’re Gone

Coral is a new Swedish project that just recently popped up on my radar, primarily the work of Miranda Coral Engholm. I’m sharing this new single for multiple reasons. First, the video just reminds me of what it feels like to be fun and free. I know we can’t all get that now, but if this video offers and solace, then its done its job. Second, I can’t get the guitar line out of my mind; like its burrowed in their like some musical ceti eel. I want it to just kind of run though my brain all day in every little thing that I do. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that Miranda has this sparkling voice to match that guitar line, creating this wonderful pop gem you’ll devour on this Monday.

 

Kanine Records Signs Hoorsees

Generally speaking, I dig what Kanine and Howlin Banana Records are into, so when they’ve got something new on the horizon, I’m going to give it a listen. Their latest signing is French outfit Hoorsees, who’ve just signed with the label to release their self-titled LP next February. I was drawn to the jangling guitar style, though I’ll admit they get worked up with something slightly dreamy here; the drums don’t hurt either with their steady-toe-tap beat. The vocals are great, and I love a sort of front person that gets to stalk the stage, which doesn’t always work for indiepop, but here it seems to be fitting. Excited to hear more from this bunch as the album gets closer.

Tele Novella Release Technicolor Town

It’s been almost five years since we’ve heard from Tele Novella, but today we get to listen to their first bit of new music since House of Souls. I love the forlorn weariness of Natalie’s voice that comes through here immediately, perhaps influenced by their new home in “lost in time” Lockhart; it has this timelessness, which might be the best descriptor for this group. But, as always, they layer in little doses of sublime pop, like the faint bubbling up just near the 1:10 (or 2:47) mark of this tune. This tune will appear on the group’s new album Merlynn Belle, which will come out via Kill Rock Stars.

RULES Release Constantia Video

One of the great musical surprises of this year has been the debut release from Finnish duo Rules. An entire album of carefully crafted pop music spun around literary characters favored by Iti and Sarra; this time around their latest video pays homage to Katherine Mansfield’s “The Daughters of the Late Colonel.” One of the reasons I love this tune is that it introduces a harsher element to some of the record’s shinier moments. Sure, there’s still a nice electronic brush atop it, but the song is all about the perfect balance and execution, shining through at the 2:44 mark as the song hits that euphoric finale. If you dig what you hear, the album is available now via Soliti Music.
