Repo Fam Announce New 7″ EP

Repo Fam will be dropping a new 7″ EP next week, so we wanted to whet your appetite with just a few quick little ditties that might capture your attention. For starters, the two tracks couldn’t be more juxtaposed, illustrating the diverse brand of rock n’ roll the group bring to the table. On “Psycho Bombs” you get more of that anti-pop meets garage rock, utilizing slowed jagged guitars and steady drumming bombast. But, “Whipped Cream” flips things over and gives you this scuzzy noise fest, though the band still manage to capture some of hint of melodic format as they push forth. Both these jams appear on the Whipped Cream 7″ EP, out next week via our friends in Gentle Reminder Records.

Lunchbox Share Over Way Too Soon Video

In less than two weeks, Lunchbox will be dropping After School Special, their enchanting new LP. But, in listening to this brand new single, I think the world over is going to have some strong feelings to the track’s thematic message; it’s set “against the backdrop of the ever-changing Oakland cityscape,” with a friendly ghost frolicking about town to emphasize that all the things we love and hold dear, “nothing can ever stay the same.” Of course, two decades of pop from Tim and Donna definitely feel familiar, giving off a sense of comfort amidst the harrowing theme. I love how the horns sort of burst through those jangling guitar stabs and push the pop envelope just a bit more. There’s no such thing as too much pop! After School Special will be out on October 30th via Slumberland Records/Lost Sound Tapes.

Time for Dreams Drop New Conflict Dream Video

Our friends over at It Records some good jams coming your way, so we’re back this week with a spotlight on Time for Dreams, who will have a new LP coming out in early 2021 via the label. On their latest single, they have this sort of new age anti-pop feel to it; its clearly a pop song, but the beats are subdued, almost there as a place holder. But, Amanda Roff’s voice is like finding a sparkling crystal buried in the wall of a some dark cavern, just faintly sparkling and hopping around the 1:31 mark; you sort of have to dust off that crystal to reveal the inherent pop nature of the track, but do so and you’ll be supremely rewarded. Life of the Inhabitant will be out early next year!

The Bats Share Gone to Ground Video

You can’t really start a Friday of new music off if you don’t cover that new Bats tune can you? No. You just can’t. So here we are, enjoying the promise of a 10th LP on the horizon, and a wonderfully solemn pop tune from Robert Scott and company. While its easy to revel in the dark simplicity of this tune, I was really connected when the light vocal accompaniment comes in during the chorus; it gives you that melodic nod while also bringing in a sense of longing. For me, that’s where that joy is…that sense of seeking something out, knowing it exists and feeling like it holds the rewards of the world…and such is the promise of Bats tune. Foothills will be out via Flying Nun on November 13th.

Love Sport Share Wrong Kind of Evil Video

Not too far in the past, Finnish outfit Love Sport dropped their most recent LP, And Justice For All; today we share the band’s video for “Wrong Kind of Evil,” opening with one of my favorite guitar lines from the record. Immediately building tension, the song expands into more traditional rock territory with Teemu Tanner bringing his distinctive howl into the picture. But, its the chorus here that really sells this tune, bringing in this balance between heavy rock and melody; I can always hear the band having fun as their rocking through it…great to hear the joy in recording shine through. Mamalarky Share You Make Me Smile Video

Avid Mamalarky fan here, and ready for you to really sit back and enjoy this new track from the group. If you’d caught the earlier singles this year, you might find this one as more of a contemplative approach, but its equally as rewarding, if not more so in my opinion. It opens creeping along with Livvy’s vocals wrapping around the tight little guitar notes; a careful ear will hear slight little electronic bubbles and tiny drops of feedback fuzz. It all sets up the listener for the perfect chorus drop at the 1:20 mark…you build the tension, release the emotion, and we’re all hooked. Okay, so I’m at least speaking for myself, but I imagine you can’t turn away from those sweet playful notes either. Still, the group retreat into the comfort of their quiet shell, spending a little time with the ornate approach from earlier in the tune, only to kick back in with that huge hook. They drop their self titled album on November 20th via Fire Talk.

Chris Smith Shares Second Hand Smoke Video

Chris Smith just released his brand new album Second Hand Smoke, and since records never die, we’re encouraging your attention by sharing this video that accompanies the album’s title track. In the video, you’ve got this colorful stop-motion footage, seemingly matching every stretch and stomp of the guitar. The song reeks of a swampy blues, raw and barbaric, with guitar lines snaking around your speakers as sounds of the lonely desert echo through your brain. As for the rest of the record, its as if Smith has just split his chest open with a knife and let his guts spill out before you; you’ll be greeted by an emotional album that will haunt the rest of your day. I’ve been really enjoying “Sunny” and “Animal;” you can find it now via It Records.

Sun June Announce Somewhere LP

With the release of “Singing” last month, we all knew Sun June had something cooking; today they officially announce the release of their new LP, Somewhere, handled by Run for Cover and Keeled Scales. For me, I’m not sure what’s more striking at this point…the song or its accompanying video. I love the use of light and shadow in the video, directed by the band’s own Laura and Stephen, but damned if the song doesn’t blow the rest of the musical competitors out of the water. The song, trickles in around forlorn notes and Colwell’s solemn delivery; you’re almost oblivious to the subtle tension building, bursting through near the 2:50 mark to deliver an emphatic sonic euphoria that solidifies the song’s greatness. The LP will be out in February of next year!

Flying Fish Cove Announce Viridian EP + Share Video for Title Track

I’ve been an unabashed fan of Flying Fish Cove since the release of their remarkable debut, At Moonset; they went on to release another EP and a delightful cover of “Shallow” by Heavenly. Today we are fortunate to bring you the news that the group have the Veridian EP ready for you, and they’ve made this announcement by sharing their scene by scene remake of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” video. Dena’s crystalline voice has this sparkle to it as she spins lyrics about “mythical love, memories, and finding profound deep understanding.” Recently the band has shrunk to the core of Dena and Jake, which I think benefits them, at least on this track, forcing them to layer the track with textural notes, using various guitar sounds, swelling vocal arrangements and light electronic notes. Another endearing entry into an already lovable catalog; the Viridian EP goes out today, grab it HERE!

American Friend Share His Energy Runs Backwards Video

Everyone has been raving about Jana Horn’s new album Optimism (you’ve check it out haven’t you? It’s HERE), but we shouldn’t forget that she began this summer for us by releasing a 7″ with her other project American Friend; the band is comprised of Jana and Adam Jones (of my fave Deep Time), at least for the 7″ recording. Over the weekend they shared a really striking video directed by another ATX local, Shannon Widermeyer, and it seems fitting that we share this track with you as a reminder of the release. One of the things I love about this recording, aside from Horn’s always mesmerizing vocals, are the tones of the guitars; it’s like they’re haunting every lyrical note, heavy with their own sentiment.
