Emma Kupa Announces It Will Come Easier

Make no mistake about it…Emma Kupa is one of my absolute favorite songwriters; I loved Standard Fare; I love Hayman Kupa Band and Mammoth Penguins (that MP LP last year is still great!). So, when she announced her new solo effort, It Will Come Easier, I nearly knocked over my chair to get a listen. It’s interesting to hear this track, as it seems to draw on bits and pieces of her musical career, from the folkier moments with the banjo to that ripping guitar line you can hear in the distance…but of course, its always about that distinctively powerful voice. It’s hard to not see this song’s lyrics through the lens of the last few weeks, however, as the protagonist seems fed up with facing the same dilemma time and time again…so even our art is starting to call us out. A beautiful tune, and one we’ll look forward to picking up when It Will Come Easier drops via Palo Santo Records and Fika Recordings this Fall!

Lost Tapes Share Six by Six Video

Last year’s The Bill EP was a really great listen from Lost Tapes; it was four incredible pop tunes that had the duo working at the peak of indie pop. One of the highlights was “Six by Six,” using these softened melodies from Pau and RJ to entrance the listener; it was dreamy in feel, but buoyed by the percussive bounce throughout the song’s duration. The video is using found footage pieced together to kind of draft the song’s narrative; I’m particularly interested in this punk rock kid dancing about in his bedroom…feels like someone had a camera in my childhood home. It’s a great reminder of the longevity of great songs, showing us that years later the song still has the charm. This EP is available courtesy of Shelflife.

Protomartyr Share Michigan Hammers

Admittedly, I haven’t quite boarded the most recent Protomartyr train; I know it’ll grow on me, but this is the first single where I felt excited for the LP. Honestly, I’m absolutely in love with the guitar sound; I love the way they just ring out discordantly, like they’re just tearing the fabric on your high end speaker covers. Joe Casey’s indifferent delivery is the calm in the storm here, settling the track as best as he can; there’s a nice middling section to, giving listeners a little reprieve, a chance to contemplate and reflect on the track. Their new LP Ultimate Success Today will be out on July 10th via Domino.

Pop Filter Ready Debut Album

We heard news of Pop Filter on an all Aussie compilation from earlier this year, but we had no idea how quickly the band were ready to drop their debut LP. Those who recognize the familiar faces in the video probably won’t be shocked at how quickly (and amazingly) these songs seem to have come together. They’re all masters of casual pop stylings, allowing the chorus to include the whole band for this charming hook that you take with you when the song’s done playing through your speakers. Always endearing…their debut Banksia will be out on August 21st via Spunk/Bobo Integral/Osborne Again.

BOAT Share Loneliness Kills Video

I’m not sure if you’ve been on the ball and grabbed the Tread Lightly album from BOAT as of yet, but in case, I feel like this song might push you over the edge. Like all things during this pandemic, the video represents the lives of the band members under isolation, which, oddly, ties into the thematic element of the track. But, if I had one track to offer you from this record, I think this would be the one you’d love the most! From the cruising guitars to the way the vocals rise and soar in the verses; this is what it would sound like if the Beach Boys were super into pushing out power-pop hits for the masses. Steven Adams and the French Drops Share New Video

There’s a brand of bouncing indie folk with a twist of pop that I’m quite partial too, and it seems like Fika Recordings always has their finger on the style, like Steven Adams and the French Drops. It’s the latest project for Adams, who led the Broken Family Band throughout the 00s, and man if this song’s not a charmer. I mean, you can’t ignore the natural energy swinging through, playing atop that bouncing piano and the joyous choruses involving Adams’ own children backing him up. The video features a bunch of great friends all filming themselves celebrating the nap during quarantine, with several other Fika labelmates like Darren Hayman. This song appears on Keep It Light, which will drop in August!

Galore Drop Cucaracha Video

As a kid, I remember being in love with the sound of punk and grunge upon my introduction to it all; it felt like something I could do, something that was attainable (the sound/not stardom). Somewhere, sitting in their bedroom right now is a similar kid, waiting for that same door to open, that same sound; please play them this song from Galore. The band’s guitar sound has this sharp angular stabs and guitar riffs, which can come across as frantic at times, matching up with the vocal howls. When the whole group joins in on the vocals, this is what rock n’ roll should feel like, to me anyways; it has this rapturous joy, even when the tone seems harsh. Everything about this song, from the music itself to the video makes you want to be part of the fun; makes you want to start a band, makes you want to be part of something bigger than yourself…that’s what rock n’ roll should be. If you dig it, look for their self titled album on June 1st via Rocks in Your Head Records.

Even as We Speak Shares Someone Video

After reuniting in 2016 for the much-missed NYC Popfest, Even as We Speak have share a good bit of new music; first an EP and now we’re anxiously anticipating Adelphi, their first full length after their return. Today we have another reason to celebrate “Someone,” as the band just shared the video of the dreamy track. The video mostly works with shots of Mary singing in various settings on different TV sets, throwing in some full bands shots along the way. One of the reason’s I love this song is how it seems like Mary’s the star, but there’s so much to shine a light on in the other bits behind the front of the mix…particularly in the way the guitar closes out the tune. Adelphi is out on July 24th via Shelflife.

RG Lowe Shares Beauty Finds Forever Video

While I admittedly am struggling with a lot of mellow vibes during quarantine, the artistic vision of the lates RG Lowe single allowed me to immerse myself in the thematic elements, allowing the song to be slowly absorbed. While the video continues with Lowe’s themes of sensuality and physicality that run through his newest release Life of the Body, there’s more of a delicate structure to the song itself. It seems fitting that one of the core members of Balmorhea would craft such a tune; part of the song’s majesty revolves around the space in the track, with strummed guitar and voice over a light piano, it truly becomes like this ornate moment. As a connoisseur of ten second pop moments, I think the swell from 2:15 to 2:25 is quite special…as if the song needed anything more. Life of the Body is out May 22nd via Western Vinyl.
