Dance A Lot with Nick Griffith

As rains cover our town, it seems only fair that we begin your day here by playing this fun little ditty from Australia’s Nick Griffith; if anything, you can escape the gloom of your day with this pop number. This is the sort of electronic stuff that I can totally get behind; it seems so simple that I could pull it off (though that’s probably untrue), but it also has these little pop treats you can’t escape. Here, you’ve got little doses of steel drums bouncing the rhythm along. You’ll also get some accompanying vocals from Sophie McComish of Body Type (operating under the name Tuffence Meringue). This single comes your way courtesy of Dinosaur City Records.

Virginia Trance Announce Vincent’s Playlist

I’m a big Psychic Ills fan, so I’ve always been closely following Virginia Trance, the side-project of Scott Ryan Davis. He’s just announced a new record for the project, Vincent’s Playlist, and does so with this sprawling ode to Lou Reed stretching over 5 minutes. To a certain degree, patience is the name of the game with this tune; it almost entrances the listener on first listen; your repeat listens will begin to reveal details like the saxophone and its correlating guitar lines. This song feels like it’s an experiment in the craft of songwriting, with the album promising to incorporate a few rough edges, but here it’s all about the undeniable allure of good old guitar rock. Vincent’s Playlist drops on May 8th via BYM Records.

Shasta Share Roaming Hearts Video

San Francisco’s Shasta has some heavy-hitters working on crafting the tunes that appear on their debut EP; you’ve got members who’ve played in Bleached, the Shins, Beck and Gothic Tropic…if we’re namedropping. On the band’s latest single, it’s just on the knife’s edge of a dance hit; the sharp edges are there, and there’s a seductive nature to the tune that beckons you to the dance floor. Perhaps a touch too slow for traditional dance grooves, but in that subtlety you’re likely to dive deeper into the song’s natural intoxication, guaranteeing you’ll have it on blast at your next late night shindig. Look for the debut EP on March 13th via Dowd Records.

Orpine Share Sondern Video

A full minute of exuberance opens the new single from Orpine, spiriting the listener before the duo retreat to gentler fare. Oliver and Eleanor share vocals from that point forward, carefully letting a string ring on the song’s horizon; Eleanor seems to take the lead here, with Oliver supporting. This switches as the song’s moves into phase 3, with Oliver dropping quicker lyrical lines as percussion and faster strumming drives further meaning into your ears. And the song’s not even near over, taking a moment of quiet respite before bounding back down the road. I feel like this song is what it’s like as a newborn, opening your ears for the first time to the beauty in the cacophony of the world. Their album Grown Ungrown will be out on May 15th via Heist or Hit! (Soundcloud link HERE).

Cathedrale Share The Bet Video

It’s weird how the world works. Two albums into their career already and I’m just now hearing of French outfit Cathedrale; I owe it entirely to this ridiculously catchy pop boppper. This tune brought out the energy immediately with a quick drum roll and the throb of bass bobbing in the speakers. Guitars soon joined the fray, and before the vocals even came in I was having a ball listening to this tune. That’s the thing, the vocals are definitely in that sort of indifferent punk mode, and I dig that, but some of the best parts occur in the absence of voice. You can feel the fun in the chorus, though there’s no chorus; the band just let go and carry you away with exuberant garage rock. Their 3rd album, Houses are Built the Same will be released on March 27th via Howlin Banana Records.

Non La Shares Wait 4 You Video

If you haven’t gotten to listen to Non La‘s debut Not in Love LP, then this is your chance to correct your mistakes. It’s a refreshing pop rock record that reminds me, to a degree of the early Diet Cig stuff. It has that same infectious quality, and a simplicity that allows for the earnestness of the songwriting to sparkle in the forefront. There’s just something about no frills good old fashioned rock n’ roll, and its on full display in this video, only furthering my belief that you’re life will be infinitely better the moment you take a chance to grab the LP from Lost Sound Tapes and Kingfisher Bluez.

RVG Sign to Fire and Announce Feral LP

I’m super happy that there’s a new RVG LP on the horizon; they were hands-down my favorite act at SXSW a few years ago…and as I recall their new single was part of those live sets. There’s a little more polish to this track, but I actually really love that about it; the guitars have more sheen, making them sharper in their soft rings. I think thematically, almost every human can relate to this concept, so you should universally love it! But, most importantly, the video does an exceptional job of capturing the passion in Romy’s performances; you’ll be hard pressed to find a performer putting that much soul into every song. Good news is they’ve just signed with Fire Recordings to release Feral, out April 24th!

Public Practice Announce Gentle Grip

Public Practice is offering up something I didn’t know I needed on this rainy Texas day; they’re bringing me back to the pop side of old school punk rock. This song has these frantic jagged riffs and odd little time signatures, driving the infectiousness up a notch as your toes go tapping furiously. The vocal delivery has a bit of a stutter to it, which matches the video’s aesthetic as well; there’s definitely bravado too, building on the promise of exuberant live shows we fully expect from the group. Their new album Gentle Grip will be out on May 15th via Wharf Cat Records.

Pleased to Meet You: Brain Drugs

It’s always great to find new stuff going on in the world, and this new single below has two great things to offer: 1) it’s the first release from new Aussie label Cannery Records and 2) Brain Drugs is a new project from Mike and Pete. Who are they? I can only surmise they’re the two hay-covered gentleman in the accompanying video (the costumes took 6 people and 2 weeks to construct!). Musically, they’re offering this sort of intoxicating instrumental synth and drum work; it’s rhythmic pulses find some magical way to crawl beneath your skin as you watch the grainy 8mm footage before your eyes. The steadiness and constraint are important, neither pushing or pulling the song in one direction, just holding the line, and you! Their debut album comes out this April.

Sweet Whirl Announces How Much Works

Thanks to my on-going infatuation with Australia’s Chapter Music, I’ve had Sweet Whirl on my radar for a hot minute, but today she announces How Much Works, her debut LP…and she does so in striking fashion. I remarked last time I covered a tune from the project how powerful Esther Edquist’s voice was, and here, it sounds even more assured than a year ago; it’s bolder somehow, carrying the weight of the song as piano and atmospherics collide into one another. The sparseness of the song allows the emotion to tear through your speakers and hits you across the face. This new LP will be out on March 29th.
