It’s Monday, so I don’t want to ruin your musical week, but you’re all going to love this brand new track from Half Dream; it’s going to keep getting played in your head all week…sorry about that. Paige Berry owns this song; her voice falls somewhere between Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten, mixing heavy tones with angelic sparkle that rises in the mix. I love how the band sets the song up, Berry and a few riffs riding through the Texas countryside before the drums drop in to thicken the mixture, adding in a natural hook to bury the song deep within your subconscious. This track appears on the band’s forthcoming Monster of Needing EP, which drops on April 2nd. Seazoo Share Video for The Pleasure

When Seazoo graced us with their presence at our impromptu SXSW show last year, we had an absolute blast…and got to hear a few of the new jams that we’re thinking will show up on their forthcoming album Joy. For me, my infatuation with the band revolves around their combination of energetic riffs and cool pop structures. It’s like having your hooks and feeling soothed all at the same time, which is really what all us pop fans want anyways. This is a straight up bop, keeping it with our Friday theme of hits. The new LP drops on April 3rd via Big Terry.

Lisasinson Share Infectious Single, Atasco

This is going to be a hard pill for you to swallow, but I absolutely guarantee that the best song you’re going to hear today is this new jam from Spanish quartet Lisasinson. The first 40 seconds, I was sold, but also sort of on pins and needles wondering where would this song go? Little did I know it’d drop in and rock my socks off! I nearly jumped out of my chair and started flailing around the room; I’m old now so I just tapped my toes super hard. It’s scuzzy in all the right places, and filled to the brim with melodies you can’t get out of your head, no matter how hard you try. Their new single is out today via Elefant, and I’ll probably listen to it another twelve or thirteen times before I even post this.

Peel Dream Magazine Announce Agitprop Alterna

In listening to this new track from Peel Dream Magazine, I keep thinking how it almost feels like multiple songs being carefully placed atop one another, like some brilliant experiment in pop music. At times, you’re drawn to the buzzy guitar swell, especially upon pressing play at first. Then a vocal comes in, almost like a seance chant; it becomes clear that that serves more as another textured layer, with yet another vocal entering the foray as the focal point. To me, it’s brilliant on multiple levels, one being that it’s a success of a tune, let alone one that feels like 3 songs meshed into a single entity. This is a band everyone should be keeping an eye on going into the release of Agitprop Alterna; it’s out on April 3rd via Slumberland/Tough Love.

Shopping Drop For Your Pleasure Video

The new Shopping LP is out in just a few weeks, and this new single has the sound spinning styles just a bit differently. They’ve been brandishing these sort of punk stabs, but this time, while staying true, they give you more of a dance punk feel. It’s a pulsing vibe that seems perfectly geared for dance floors, especially when those little synth lines come in to the party just before the minute mark. I really like the soft vocals that sort of get slid in throughout, juxtaposed with the harsher delivery that generally adds rhythm to the track. All or Nothing is out February 7th via FatCat Records.

Deeper Announce Auto-Pain

If you missed out on Deeper and their self-titled LP, you’re forgiven, but I promise you that you won’t want to sleep on Auto-Pain, the band’s forthcoming album. Admittedly, those post-punk feuding guitar lines had me immediately. Still, what really pushes this song forward is the anxiousness of the vocal delivery; it feels frantic and rushed, pushing you towards danger. It’s only made more emphatic by these little buzzing guitar lines just beneath the mix, adding a tension that helps the song all along the way. Then the 2.5 minute hits and they throw in this intoxicating pop sensibility that felt unexpected yet supremely memorable. Looks to be another success; the LP drops on March 27th via Fire Talk.

Darren Hayman Announces Home Time

I’m not sure where I first stumbled upon Darren Hayman, but his songwriting has been ever-present since that time, whether that’s part of Hayman Kupa Band, his solo work, or just revisiting Hefner; he’s always hanging about in my rotations. Barely a few months after the ambitious 12 Astronauts, Hayman has just announced Home Time with this playful little single. The track revolves around two lyrical lines, and that’s it; still, the thematic element kind of encourages you to get up and try and try again, no matter what the outcome…that seems to be the nature of all our lives, making sense of our failures. Home Time will be out this Spring via Fika Recordings.

Black Books Share New Single

It seems like a long time since we’ve heard from Austin outfit Black Books, but they’re back with this brand new single from their forthcoming Cheer Up EP, which we’re happy to share with you. This track has that sort of broad sweeping orchestral feel, akin to acts like Other Lives; it’s built to craft this huge emotional wave that just crashes into you, particularly in that little turn just around the 1 minute mark. I love the cathartic burn that jumps in around the 2.5 minute mark, giving the song a little bit of bombast as it sprawls to a close. Look for the EP this Spring!

 

Figure Austere Share Drippy Eyes Video

France is a hotbed of incredible pop music as of the last few years, and the good people over at Solidarity Club Records are bringing the bedroom pop stylings of Figure Austere all the way from Evry, France to your doorstep. In the song below you have a father dealing with the anxieties of his child, which as portrayed in the video comes with a sense of melancholy. But, children are resilient, and by the end of the video you’ve turned that frown upside down. Musically, the song recalls to me a sort of vague homage to Kings of Convenience, though spun through a sort of upbeat synthesized mixer; it’s energetic, but still feels supremely personal. Pop Number from Ciel

I was fairly bored with yesterday’s run of the mill tunes and emails, that is until I stumbled across this track from new Brighton outfit, Ciel. I think perhaps I fell in love with its anti-pop construction. There’s this definite quiet delivery of the verses that seemingly set you up to fall in love with a big hook-laden chorus, but that never comes. Instead, the band ride out the enchantment with a brooding pulse before slipping back into another verse; they just ignore modern constructs, and execute in the dreamiest fashion possible. They’ll be releasing their debut Movement EP this Spring, so keep a lookout.
