Girlatones Announce Horn if You’re Honky

Aside from the fact that I can’t stop giggling at the title of the new LP from Australia’s Girlatones, I’m totally sold on the opening single they’ve shared with the record announcement. It’s this soft bit of pop, crafted beautifully on the back of a piano, touched up with some light percussion and delicate little arrangements; I loved the crisp guitar notes at the 3 minute mark. Honestly, it kind of reminds me of the slow-core stylings of maybe Bedhead, though spun through a different set of influences; the song sort of builds and builds, peaking as the song draws to a close. Horn if You’re Honky will be out on March 20th via Meritorio and Lost and Lonesome.

Other Lives Announce For Their Love

It’s been almost 5 years since we last heard from Other Lives, but today they’re back with the announcement of For Their Love. While they’ve been away for a minute, they’re clearly every bit as interested in the detailed craftsmanship of song as ever; this video alone features an array of instruments and textures used to build a huge sweeping movement. This song in particular never seems to peak, hanging the chorus just on the edge of restraint…a tip either way and the song wouldn’t come off nearly as perfect as it does here. It’s good to hear from this lot; they’ll be releasing For Their Love on April 24th via ATO Records.

Imp of Perverse Share Despair Puff

The great thing about living in any so called “music capital” is there’s still stuff you haven’t discovered, like Imp of Perverse. It’s the recording project of Sean Lochridge, who seems to have honed in on my love for really solid collage pop. He’s built layers of poppy little guitar riffs, buoyed by nice little textural synth touches that add some dense atmosphere to the track. The vocals are hidden, quiet in the mix, but it’s perfect in the way that it feels just like an added texture in the track, yet still stands out on its own. Happy to get turned onto this, and then hopefully get you hyped on it too!

The Lucksmiths Share Camera Shy Video

What?! The Lucksmiths are sharing a new video? Didn’t that band call it quits in 2009!? Well, yes, but they’re putting out their very incredible Naturaliste on vinyl for the very first time since its 2003 release. The video takes a bunch of old video footage and compiles it into one giant story of nostalgic warmth; the band seem carefree and frivolous throughout, which is probably the way we’d all love to be remembered. I feel like the song speaks for itself, as the gentle shuffle of the guitar sound is something that’s filled my own record collection; they were one of the most consistent joys in music for so long. If you’re a fan or just getting turned onto it, the band will release Naturaliste this Friday.

Human Barbie Share Be Careful What You Wish For

If you ever gotten caught up in the great nostalgic feeling of pop music, then you’re going to find yourself immensely satisfied by the work of Human Barbie, and the band’s new video. While it flirts with these modern bedroom tropes, solitary and slow, it offer has this sort of melody that is indebted to the timelessness of pop craftsmanship. For me, it’s all about the chorus, kind of drifting in and out of your soul; I’m taken each time the lines “the grass is always greener” are uttered, accented by the faintest strum in the distance. This track appears on Get a Life, out on Poor Man Records early next year.

 

Pulsing Synth Pop from Arch of Love

I’m not totally sure what’s going on with everyone in masks throughout this video, but they all seem to be grooving to this new track from Arch of Love, so I can get behind that. It’s a cool synth pulse moving the song along, cut in the opening moments by this meandering guitar chord, building this heavy pop feel that leaves the floor open for the vocals. It definitely has this nostalgic feel to it, build upon 80s new wave sounds, though you can clearly hear the group trying to make things much brighter and bolder, particularly in the way Chelsea Brennan’s voice hits those higher tones.

Delicious Indiepop from Fortitude Valley

I knew without even listening to this great Fortitude Valley tune that it would rule. The project stems from the mind of Laura Kovic, who played keys in Tigercats (a band that rules), but she grabbed members from Martha and Night Flowers (more bands that rule), so you knew, knew…it was going to be good. I was absolutely right, as the song starts slow, building in the natural movement over Kovic’s warm voice; I love how the fuzzy guitar shoots off in the distance behind the more purposeful licks in the very front. I was charmed right away, but the big hook comes around the 2 minute mark when extra backing vocals are included to really pull on your pop strings. As of right now, the band are wrapping up their debut, so here we are on proverbial pins and needles.

The Crayon Fields Reissue All the Pleasures of the World

In a blogosphere long ago, I once gave All the Pleasures of the World a 4.5/5 rating…that was back when I had the freedom to write full on album reviews. I stand by that rating, and if anything, I might just round it up to a 5/5. Lucky for the rest of the world, the Crayon Fields and their label Chapter Music are going to reissue the LP in a deluxe format, accompanied by some rarities, including a bunch of covers the band had stored away. The plus side for me is that this gives another reason to share the title track, now accompanied by a brand new video from the singer/guitarits, Geoffrey O’Connor. You can grab the reissue on February 7th!

Pintandwefall Announce Your Stories Baby

I don’t know if you’re ready for this new tune from Pintandwefall; it might just be the sweetest tune you’re going to hear this week. The Finnish supergroup have been at it for over a decade, and here you can hear how the years have developed fine craftsmanship. The musical elements are kind of low in the mix, which is perfect, as the track is really all about the vocal elements. I love the lightly angelic tones of the lead voice here, but it wouldn’t be nearly as successful if you didn’t have the chorale atmosphere behind it; its vocal texturing at its very best. Such a powerful number; it will be on their new effort, Your Stories Baby, which is being released by Soliti Music on January 17th (apparently in honor of my birthday).

Loving Announce Debut Album

The hype machine around Loving has been building and building since their self-released EP, and today comes the announcement of their debut LP, If I Am Only My Thoughts. This single accompanying the announcement teases these lite little bossa-nova harmonies, working behind these sharp airy guitar notes and calmed percussion. This is the ultimate happy escapism vibe; you can feel yourself sinking into your chair, sinking into yourself…and you probably couldn’t be happier about it. Just another intoxicating pop number here, which has all of us at ATH just as excited as the rest of the folks for their LP. You can grab it on January 31st via Last Gang Records.
