Skux Share Painted Blank

I feel like I needed a solid kick in the ass this morning, something to get me up out of my own way and jumpstart the day…so here I am with the latest single from Skux. It’s a grungy little rocker, blasting out its energy from the get-go; it’s all guitars and drums just driving you furiously towards an unknown end. All that energy and fury seems fitting for a song about the end of a relationship, but what’s special is what Ayisha Jaffer’s voice offers in its performance. Jaffer has this controlled howl that hides the faintest pop sensibility, which ends up bringing some calm over the verses and choruses. The band will release the Kudis EP on August 23rd.

ATX Spotlight: TVs Daniel + Annabelle Chairlegs

It’s the time of year when releases come hard and fast, everyone trying to cram music in between their Fall tours and what not; I mean, we have 3 releases on our label in the next two + months, so you know the rest of Austin is busy. Two things I missed while on a brief beach vacay were these new jams from TVs Daniel and Annabelle Chairlegs.

TVs Daniel is the most recent project from all around rock n’ roller Daniel Fried; he’s also the key element in acts like Video and Bad Sports (amongst others). I love this track for its huge buzzsaw guitars disguised beneath a penchant for anthemic arena rock; the subtle backing vocals are a really nice touch. This track appears on a 7″ for Italian label, Wild Honey Records. It pretty much rules.

Annabelle Chairlegs are everyone’s Austin favorites; they’re the band that all the bands love…they even appeared on the Slack Capital Compilation we put together with Eric of Big Bill and First Human Records. This new single has this swagger lurking in the midst of psychedelic waves; I love the tenacity of the vocal performance. This tune should pop up on a sophomore LP any day now.

Elizabeth Shares Parties Video

Elizabeth is one of my favorite Australian voices; she’s previously been the leader of the wonderful Totally Mild, though her attention is now 100% on her own project. This video completely captures the feelings of the track’s lyrics, showing Elizabeth isolated in the foreground while parties rage on behind her, where she misses her ex partner. I found the track has this subdued enchantment; the guitars ring carefully while the beat stays calm and steady, building the tension for the release of the chorus. Clearly, Elizabeth owns the song, drawing you in with her powerful performance…she’s just incredible. Her debut solo effort, The Wonderful World of Nature will be out on Our Golden Friend on November 1st.

Parsnip Share Rip It Off Video

When watching this new Parsnip video, I honestly was perplexed; I’m still perplexed, which ultimately is the point, I reckon…to leave you thinking after you’ve watched. It’s filled with beautiful scenery, choreographed dance and Victorian-nutcracker attire crafted by Tim Burton. But, while I was mesmerized and trying to figure out what I was watching, my ears were burning with joy. Guitar lines jangle in psychedelic fashion while the rhythm section employs the proper cymbal work to keep this mystical enchantment. The Melbourne quartet will release their debut When the Tree Bears Fruit on August 30th via Trouble in Mind Records.

Mondo Video from Operator Music Band

Operator Music Band are working towards the release of their album Duo Duo in September, so they’ve shared another track to catch your ear. It’s interesting to me that the band get the Stereolab comparison, just because there’s a lady and some warped synth pulses; I feel like it’s more organic, almost like !!!. On this number, it’s all about that rhythmic groove, from the cymbal work to the bass lines to the synth stabs; I think the vocals even have this purposeful pulse to them. But, ultimately, that comparison for me is all about the joy, and when you get to the song’s end, you’ll feel that exuberance through your speakers. The new LP drops on September 20th via Broken Circles.

Spinning Coin Return with Visions at the Stars

I remember back in 2017 listening to Permo, and just being blown away by the distinctive style of songwriting that Glasgow’s Spinning Coin brought to the table; it always seemed like every person in the band had a little say in what was going to come across, making for a diverse listen. But, they’ve been super quiet until today when they announce a brand new 7″ with this joyous new single. It opens with some interesting vocals, perhaps from Rachel, kind of like something Dirty Projectors would have spun. But, it’s a nice juxtaposition for the relaxed feel of the rest of the track; I think it also brings in this slight melody very carefully that cruises through the song’s entirety. The video footage seems to have been filmed by the band themselves, which in general, is a sign of a band out having a fun time. You can grab the new 7″ on August 30th via Domino!

Robert Sotelo Announces Infinite Sprawling

It’s always interesting to discover what musically captivates us, what draws us in. Sometimes, it’s a huge hook or some beat, or sometimes, its the absence of it all, as is the case in this new tune from Robert Sotelo. He crafts this sparse musical landscape, working with his guitar and voice to attract your ears…then he moves the song towards a touch more elegance, built by blossoming strings and aided by backing vocals. It feels so grand at times, and yet so simple…it’s hard for me to turn away from it. This track will appear on the new LP, Infinite Sprawling, out September 13th via Upset the Rhythm.

Black Marble Signs with Sacred Bones

I’ve loved a lot of music, but one of the acts I always tried to turn folks onto was Black Marble; I’ve even used these here pages to support the project. It seems that promise is finally coming to the forefront, as today they announced their signing to Sacred Bones Records. Chris Stewart, the man behind the project, has altered his craft for this new LP; he’s admittedly pushed the vocals to the front and sort of stripped them of various effects that accompanied his earlier works. And, while this began to emerge on It’s Immaterial, the beats here are pretty sharp, yet also really sparse, letting you focus on their intent as the lyrics sink into your skin. The new LP is titled Bigger Than Life and it will be out on October 25th! There is also a scheduled tour date at Austin’s Levitation festival too!

Young Guv Shares Patterns Prevail

Ben Cook’s been rocking Young Guv tunes on the side of all his other projects (Fucked Up/No Warnings) for quite some time, and this year he’s made the jump to Run for Cover Records. His new record sounds like what we’ve come to expect, albeit with a little more power behind it; this new single steps write into that mold immediately. As soon as things kick off, those guitars burst in, rattling your speakers, with the slightest hint of pop sensibility. His voice here sounds a lot like Elliott Smith penning an ode to Teenage Fanclub…which is a huge compliment in my book. Guv I comes out on August 2nd.

Deadbeat Beat Share The Box

When I pressed play on the latest single from Deadbeat Beat, I was digging on the indifferent vocal delivery; it reminded my of various acts I love like Dumb or the Zoltars. But, what sold me on the band’s sound was the very slightest touch, but opened up the song to the brand of pop sensibility I adore; you’re right, it is the “do do do” backing vocal. What can I say? You brandish a hook, and I’m a pretty eager fish to catch onto. Aside from the vocals there’s this scuzzy shuffling guitar line that occasionally rings out discordantly amidst some tight cymbal work. The group release How Far on August 2nd via Arrowhawk and Crystal Palace.
