Wild Flowers of America Share Freak on the Street Vid

It’s Tuesday, so it’s time to turn your stereos way up and have yourself a little fun, and what better way than with some fresh power-pop from Wild Flowers of America. The video is a sort of homage to the stylistic choices of late 70s/early 80s Elvis Costello videos, and to be honest, the song’s not too far off either. It starts with this almost muted guitar riff, harnessing the natural pop energy behind those riffs, only to unleash them in the chorus in a grand fashion. I definitely appreciate the good old rock n’ roll solo that closes the tune out; this is some of the best pop rock you’ll hear all week! This jam appears on Lost in the Salvation Army, out this Friday via Crutch of Memory Enterprises.

Jetstream Pony Share I Close My Eyes Video

I’m a few days late to the game, but the new track from Jetstream Pony is just to good not to share with you all, especially as I’m the 666th viewer of the below video! Counting in with drum sticks, the song almost immediately jumps into this fuzzy stomp from the rhythm section, keeping your head bobbing for a solid 2.5 minutes. Of course, the light jangle and ring of the guitars crafts the perfect juxtaposition there, which sets the mood for the warm emotions of the vocals; I like how they stay steady and calm until the slight pop turn of the chorus comes in to play. This gem is on their brand new 7″ for Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten, out tomorrow…but hopefully there’s a full length just around the bend.

Bauwaves Share Early Morning Summer

Austin outfit Bauwaves are gearing up for the release of their new LP, U R Everything in January, so today we’ve got their new video to share with you. The track has this jagged little indie rock vibe to it, almost as if the band can’t contain the music they’re about to unleash on all us. You can feel the tension in the vocals, the way the syllables are shaking to get out and crash down upon us; it’s a great way to set up the chorus from Lew Houston, who describes the song as a cathartic morning walk in Austin, helping him cope with a deep depression. Scuzzy and catchy, my favorite sort of indie rock; the tune appears on the new LP, out January 10th via Salinas Records.

Moon Pics Share Fall Video

I’m sort of obsessed with Adriano Caiado’s project Moon Pics at the moment. Today he shares the fantastic black and white video that accompanies his brand new single, and while there’s some incredible work in the video, the song puts me over the moon. Drawing from the likes of My Bloody Valentine and the Radio Dept, his work blends the harsh tones with this incredible pop sensibility that seems to move in and out of focus. It ends up creating this warped brilliance that sort of intoxicates you, letting you bath in this glorious soundscape crafted by Caiado in his bedroom. This new digital single is being put out by Midsummer Madness.

Xetas Announce The Cypher

We here at ATH have been waiting to hear what was in store when Xetas much anticipated new LP was announced. Today the whole world gets to hear the power the band brandish with the new of the Cypher. Immediately, there’s this dangerous energy with the rhythm section crafting a steady stomp while the riffs knife their way in and out of the tune. The vocal delivery is almost a call to action in the way its delivered…save for the chorus which brings in just the slightest hint of pop sensibility to the band’s sound. It all fades into a wall of crashing noise, drawing the song to a close. It’s energetic, touching on hardcore and punk, while building in some insatiable hooks; this could be the record that blows the rest of you out of the water. The Cypher drops on January 24th via 12XU.

Orthy Shares Which is Better

Monday’s can be a struggle, even on your days off, so you’ve gotta be sure to get something energetic to really get you moving out the door. It’s a good thing we have the latest single from Orthy hanging about; it’s the upbeat dance number I didn’t know I needed. The guitar’s have this angular dance to them, seemingly nostalgic, while offering that frivolity that makes it easy to live your best life. I love the depth of the production on this one too, adding this rhythmic pulse to the tune, only furthering the hook of the guitars. It’s all the Monday you need wrapped in a 4 minute present. Just another reason to get hip to Orthy before the band drops Fable Living in January of next year.

The Black Watch Share Crying All the Time

When you talk about prolific indie rock vets, you usually hear Guided by Voices, but around these parts, you always hear me talk about the Black Watch. The band consistently push out great content, forever sounding like themselves, and yet never sounding like they’re treading the proverbial water. On the band’s new single, the track seems almost like a meditation; the lyrics are delivered almost like a mantra, you can tell the care in the way Fredrick puts emphasis on every last syllable, all the way to the chorus line of ‘crying all the time.” Never boring, and never sounding like their finished, the Black Watch will return in January with Brilliant Failures via A Turntable Friend Records.

Pleased to Meet You: The Gonks

I’ve always admired the work of Sonny Smith, whether he’s playing in the Sunsets, working on solo stuff or writing tunes for theater productions, he’s been great. But, as of late, he’s turned his attention to Rocks in Your Head Records, his new label. Today we’re happy to introduce you to the label’s newest signee, the Gonks! The band’s described as a Shangri Las meets Tronics, though here we’re flirting with more of the Tronics experimental side; the band is led by teenage wiz Ava Lynch. We get a little horn blast working over some heavy percussive moves. But, just as you think the song’s a one-note wonder, it kicks in right at the 30 second mark. You get this jangling bit of guitar, sort of drawing on that sunny California surf vibe; I love how a second guitar comes in and sort of dances atop the first. But don’t you worry, Five Things You Didn’t Know About the Gonks is filled with great lyrics, but we figured this was the best way to introduce you to the band! Look for the LP this Friday!

Nada Surf Announce Never Not Together

Throughout my various twists and turns as a music fan, there have always been a handful of bands that have remained staples in my listening rotation, and Nada Surf has always been one such act. Today they announce that they’re back with a brand new album, and the opening single has that melodic guitar buzz that’s been there going on 30 years; it’s balanced by Matthew’s voice, giving the song that emotive softness. They do switch it up to offer a spoken word moment at the song’s forefront just before the 2 minute mark; it offers the band’s critique on the state of the world and how we can participate to make it better for all of us. Hooks and a message? Never Not Together is out on February 7th via Barsuk.

Mo Troper Announce Natural Beauty

I’ve been completely onboard with the first two Mo Troper LPs, so it only seems fitting to jump on board with his new one Natural Beauty, just announced on Friday. It’s clear through his growth that Mo’s intent upon banging out hook-laden pop songs, not too far off from where the early works of the New Pornographers dwelled. Even then, some of Troper’s devein-may-care attitude from his early days seeps through, which ends up sort of leaving you with this fuzzy guitar pop stomp that you’ll have spinning in your head for hours. Natural Beauty will be released by Tender Loving Empire on February 14th.
