Brand New Music from Flying Fish Cove

I guess when you’re on, you’re on, or so is the case with Flying Fish Cove. The band have only recently released the most excellent At Moonset LP, but now they’ve turned around to prep your ears for a new EP. Their first single from the EP has the band at their best; I think you could compare them to Alvvays here. There’s this natural softness in Dena’s voice that creates this soothing emotion that washes over you, letting you know everything’s alright; she gets a little help from a male backing role, but it’s all her show. The rest of the band sit back, lightly filling in the space with some of the best pop sounds you’ll hear today. You can’t stop the hits coming from this bunch right now, but you will have to wait for the new EP; it drops on June 21st via Jigsaw/Lost Sound Tapes.

Devendra Banhart Announces Ma

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard anything new from Devendra Barnhart, though he’s worked on a few compilations in his downtime. But, for me, while folks have their Obersts and their Whites, I’ve always been a Devendra guy; I also feel like he got sort of wrongfully placed in that whole freak-folk category…but, whatever. So, below is this wonderful new single; it’s got some nice little horn accompaniment, giving the song sort of a folk meets swamp boogie vibe; I suggest you wait until after the 3 minute mark for a real nice vocal touch from Banhart. His new album, Ma, will be out on September 13th, with a slew of tour dates slated for the fall, including a (possibly too expensive) show in Austin at Stubbs.

Christian Paul Philippi Shares Oahu 97

LA based Christian Paul Philippi caught me completely by surprise; I didn’t know anything about the songwriter other than he has an LP coming out on Forged Artifacts in late June. A few rounds of listening and its clear that we’ve got a new pop balladeer to fawn over; Philippi offers this natural softness in his voice, like he’s singing you to sleep. Behind that voice he’s textured the track with layered guitars, some strumming and some shooting off like stars in the distant night sky…it’s even closed out with this sort of brilliant ambiance. Strangely, the song leaves you feeling satisfied, charmed, which works in contrast with the thematic element of the lyrics. Grab a little joy here; Gem will be out June 28th via FA.

Jay Som Announces Anak Ko

When Everybody Works was released, it seemed that everyone unanimously fell in love with Jay Som, myself included. So, will Anak Ko live up to the expectations? Honestly, not sure, but I sure do love this new single; it’s sort of an amalgam of sounds that I’ve grown to love; there is that ringing guitar sound with roots all the way back to the Flying Nun scene, synth work is built into provide some texture, and later on there’s this buzzsaw guitar knifing its way through the tracks latter half…and it’s all spun with exuberance that immediately makes you press play and listen again. Sometimes bands can fill too many ideas and muddy the mix, but here, the execution’s perfect…all the more reason to look forward to Anak Ko, out on 8/23 via Polyvinyl.

Mal Blum Return with Salt Flats

A few weeks ago Mal Blum released “I Don’t Want To;” it was a pretty insatiable pop number, but that’s not what you’re going to get on this new track. This one is more of a slow burner, building the tension with careful percussion and an almost muted guitar throughout. At the 3:30 mark the tension is finally released with a noisy crash of guitars and pounding drums, but as quickly as it appears, it recedes, slowly grinding the track to a close. Lyrically, it’s not overly verbose, using simplicity to tie in the greater life choices the protagonist has to make through the entirety of the song/record. Look for Pity Boy on July 12th via Don Giovanni.

Cigarette Share Video fro Drips

Next week, Cigarette will release their new album Light Blues, a record filled with these ornate pop touches that walk the fine line between slow-core and bedroom pop; I think in a lot of ways it’s really similar to the Clientele, but stripped bare of the various psych flourishes. The brilliance of this video, for me, is that the tune and video are so closely tied to one another; the filming seems to move in step with the ringing of vocal notes and guitar chords. Then, just as I think I’ve done a great job pigeonholing the sound, I notice this note or that, drifting away, like Sandra Bullock in Gravity; I guess it’s me who’s floating. Beautiful sound to get you through Monday…Light Blues is out next week.

Dumb Share Video for CBC Radio 3

You haven’t heard me rave about Dumb? Well, then clearly you haven’t been following this site as of late because I’ve been pretty excited about their forthcoming LP, Club Nites. This tune gives you a little something different, and perhaps in the whole of the record, a little respite. Typically the band are offering frantic, angular chords; there’s a natural pacing that seems to race through your speakers; here, however, they’re pulling back, ever so slightly, showing patience that really allows for the innate hooks to shine through. It’s refreshing to hear them stay in their line while offering you an alternative glimpse at their sound. The album drops next week via Mint Records!

Boyracer Shares Bored and Lonely

Boyracer has been writing great fuzzy pop-punk since the early early 90s, and pretty much everyone you love and adore has probably played in the band a time or two, but now, Stewart Anderson has solidified a new line-up and new tunes. Below we have the short poppy spurt of “Bored and Lonely,” a song seemingly built upon the backbone of our society where we all feel isolated behind our screens, though we’re all likely doing the exact same thing…or at least that’s how I see it. This song will appear on a quick little three song single, but more importantly, it will also be included on a forthcoming album which we hope to hear more from in the very near future.

Sungaze Share New Familiar Video

You ever hear a song and immediately you swoon, wondering where they’ve been all your life? Okay, so perhaps that’s a touch too hyperbolic, but I felt right at home the moment I pressed play on this new video from Cincinnati’s Sungaze. While there’s this natural softness to it, almost as if it’s lulling you to sleep, a beautiful emotion sort of pervades the entirety of the tune, aided by the way the video was shot; it’s that ringing guitar line lurking beneath the haze that really drives it home for me. The band will release their debut LP, Light in All of It on July 19th…and include some Texas dates, including one here in Austin with our friends She Sir on 6/16 (who also recently released a new EP–shameless plug).

Erasers Announce Pulse Point

Usually when I write about acts from Australia, they’re almost always from Melbourne or surrounding areas; it’s rare to find ourselves in Perth, but here we are with Erasers. The duo have just a announced their sophomore LP, leading with this entrancing new single. This number is a special one, illustrating the duo’s care in their song craft; the tune has this darkened electronic pulse that barely moves, steadying the entire song around its core. From time to time, added electronic notes give the song a slight rise, as do the carefully placed guitar lines that sort of hang in the air. And, when Rebecca’s voice comes in, it’s almost like a calming wash atop it all, layered as an instrument almost. Pulse Points is out on July 12th via Fire Talk/Pouring Dream.
