Red Telephone Share Another New Tune

Late last year I wrote about discovering Red Telephone and how I didn’t really think there was anyone writing pop music through this lens; I stand by that today as they share another new tune. It sort of begins with this ominous haunting from Declan’s voice and these dark drum rolls. Still, the group’s every bit a pop band, so the song sort of builds gradually, letting the vocals match the group’s emphatic stomp to the apex of the Mt. Pop before the guitar slinks in with a heavy solo. There’s nothing quite like this band, for me at least, and I can’t stop listening to them.

I got turned onto Jade Imagine a few years back when Snowy from the Ocean Party was playing as part of the band; I then caught them at SXSW for a short stellar set. So, I was really excited to see a new video pop up in Australia with this fresh tune. One listen and you’ll thrust the band right in alongside acts like Angel Olsen or Sharon Van Etten; it has this sort of understated bravado, saturated with these little dreamy qualities that come in and out of the track. I have a feeling these guitar riffs are going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

River Gods Share Stressed Out Video

It’s Friday and you’re about to blast into the weekend, but before you do so, you better feast your eyes (and ears) on this brand new track from River Gods. While the message might give a glimmer into all the work we often put into failing/struggling relationships, you wouldn’t know it based on the huge hooks from the LA based three-piece. I love the way Shiraz sort of hangs his syllables out with the words “tell me what you want”; it’s like a pop hook fishing line…and based on the huge riffs behind him, he’s ready to reel in any pop rock fish in this pond…myself included. It’s two minutes of huge hooks wrapped up in a fun video; you can find this tune on the new album, Let Me Live, which is out on July 26th via Dadstache Records.

Lou Rebecca Shares Video for Waiting

B Gray and I are both pretty high upon Lou Rebecca, and to be honest, the act has been quietly making waves in Austin for some time. This track is something special, giving us a little bit of the duality that’s presence in the project’s work; you get both the native French tongue of Lou Rebecca, but also the accessible English. I think the special thing on the musical side is how her vocals have this breath-y quality, like last pop gasps, punctuated by the electronic work of Missions. The track will appear on her debut LP, Restless, which is being released by the fine people of Holodeck Records.

Digging on Girl Friday

Dude. Sometimes you press play on a press release and all of a sudden your toes start tapping and you scramble to find out more. This is exactly what happened last night as I listened to Girl Friday; it should come as no surprise that they’ll be accompany the Beths through NA this July. They’ve got that a very Oceanic guitar pop sound, at least on the first 2.5 minutes of their new single; it’s filled with wonderful harmonies and crisp guitar lines. But, one that 2.5 minute mark hits, they turn the song upside down, taking a more raucous approach that’s just as powerfully stunning as the opening minutes. I love a band that can do whatever the fuck they want and still make it sound super cool. Look for their Fashion Conman EP on June 28th via Hardly Art.

Get Weird with Alien Tango

I find myself inexplicably addicted to Alien Tango. There’s definitely an oddball sense of humor, in both the song’s construction and the video work we present you below. But, peel back some of the oddity and you’ll hear some really exciting things going on in the work of Alberto Garcia Roca. The beat here has this forceful video game punch to it, bordering on glitchy; these electronic sounds get layered upon one another, yanked back from time to time to reveal these marvelously intoxicating melodies. It honestly reminds me of when I fist fell into Animal Collective and found them super-exciting; I get those same vibes, do you?

Teenage Cavegirl Share Space Girl

ATX duo Teenage Cavegirl make short work of the pop ditty. They blast through with fuzzy riffs and the simplest drum work, driving home their satisfying hooks in under two quick minutes. LA rocks the sugary vocals that carry just a bit of an underlying howl; when matched with the drums, you’re going to find each tune as a little pop rock, exploding right inside your ear. Andy Ray, meanwhile, moves his guitar back and forth between jagged riffs and fuzzy hooks, tying the whole thing together with his own noisy battle axe. The group will release Candy Cigarettes on June 1st.

Le Superhomard Share Domino

It’s only been a few months since Le Superhomard dropped the excellent Meadow Lane Park, and here they are already prepping a new 7″ with this slinky dance number. It offers everything I’ve come to enjoy about the group, offering these dance floor ready beats bordering between club and disco, then sliding those beneath these casual indiepop vocals. Here they get some help from Xavier Boyer of Tahiti 80, and an excellently crafted video that’s part art piece and part lyric video; both additions are a nice touch that certify this tune as a surefire hit. The new 7″ will be out on Elefant Records this July.

Mike Donovan Shares B.O.C. Rate Applied

On Friday we’ll get to hear the new LP from Mike Donovan (Sic Alps, Peacers), and just before the release, we get one final peek into what’s coming our way. To my ears, this sounds like where pop music wanted to go in the late 60s/early 70s; it has this elegance to it that’s constantly reaching towards a grand climax. Donovan’s voice never lets it go there, sounding like he’s afraid to get there, so he holds back in the mix, sort of haunting the song before a guitar line abruptly shoots the track to its close. There’s so much in this tune, despite its brevity; you can have all of Exurbian Quonset this Friday via Drag City.

Did You See That Seablite Video?

Last week I shared another track from the forthcoming Seablite LP along with news of the Pre-Order, but just a day later they dropped another tune and this video. I had to wait a bit to post it because I know you guys are fickle, and need some Seablite space…but now I’m ready to get back at it. This track pulls away from the jangling pop side of things and moves into the shimmering realm of dream pop. I think the rhythm section still holds things really tight, propelling the tune forward while the guitars seem to swirl and dip in and out of your ear holes. I love how you can sort of tie the album title into the two sides of the band, with their jangling leaning towards the more playful “Grass Stains” and this track here bending towards “Novocaine.” Grass Stains and Novocaine is out June 7th via Emotional Response.
