Catchy Indiepop from Neleonard

I love getting turned onto the stuff that Elefant Records is always working on, especially when it has all the fingerprints of my favorite acts…only in Spanish. Today we’ve got the lead single from the latest Neleonard album, Un Lugar Imaginado. Here you can definitely hear the funky upbeat vibe of some Belle and Sebastian songs; you can even see the band pulling off the dueling female/male vocals to provide those heavenly melodies. The video embraces the romantic side of things, with two young lovers meeting up in a park with tons of mythological melodies. Only makes this number more adorable, so watch and enjoy yourself. And, while the album has been out for a minute, this digi-single has some special B-Sides.

Ludovic Alarie Shares New Tune

You’ve got to be doing something right when Blonde Redhead wants to put out your record, and if you listen to Ludovic Alarie is doing, you can definitely see why. The Quebec native switches back and forth between French and English on his latest album, and this tune has him working with the former. It allows someone like me (non-French speaking) to really treat the vocals as an added instrument; that seems natural, as they have this feathery melody that seems to be born inside Alarie. Musically, it’s casually chilled pop, like you’ve taken elements of bossanova and dream pop and put them in a lounge to kick it while sipping on a nice Scotch. We’re a Dream Nobody Wrote Down will be out on May 10th via ChouChou Records and Asa Wa Kuru.

Meet the Squiggles!

What do you do when you call it a day on a revered band? Well, if you’re Niall, who was the phenomenal drummer from the Spook School, you up and start a new band like the Squiggles. Today we get to hear what that sounds like, and we couldn’t be happier for him. It’s a bouncy little rocker with emphatic vocals and discordant chords coursing through things. I love how he still chooses to include those anthemic lyrics built for energetic live performances destined to make fans fawn. Plus, the video lets you catch Niall in his natural habitat; he’s one of the funniest, warmest humans you’re likely to meet. We’re super happy for him, and look forward to hearing the entirety of The Recruitment Drive EP.

Listen to More Film School

Film School is one of those bands that really makes me angry about the world. They offer this dreamy indie rock that sort of fuses all these brilliant elements, but sadly, everyone else gets to take home the glory. Here, they almost seem like their looking upon the early days of Interpol with reverence; it’s a bit post-punks in its natural propulsion, though there’s just a bit more shimmer in the guitar. I always get carried away with this group, playing their songs non-stop, and I can feel myself going there today. Look out for the group’s new EP this Summer, or keep your eyes peeled as they hit the road with Mint Field.

Olden Yolk Share Distant Episode

I spent a lot of time with the first Olden Yolk record; my wife and I played it a lot when our daughter was born just because it was both beautiful and quiet. Having spent some time with the band’s new LP, I’m really excited for folks to listen to it; it has the band branching out, expanding their palate. On this new single, Caity Shaffer completely steals the show, stringing her deep, dulcet tones across a sparse musical landscape, filled with this solitary pulse and tinkering piano line. It’s a solemn number, matched by the black and white video work that accompanies the single today. Living Theatre has the group growing into something far more captivating then even I (a fan) expected; it’s out on May 17th via Trouble In Mind.

doubleVee Share Map the Channels

When I first watched this new video from doubleVee, I was really struck by the video; it has some great artwork within its confines. But, if the song was awful, I could have easily ignored it, and that’s why we’re here after all, right? This tune in particular sort of reminds me of a certain innocent period in indie rock, when it was all about trading vocal duties, building the song into a swelling opus surrounded by huge melodies that were the perfect ear candy for your daily routines. Maybe that’s just me, but if it’s you, be sure to check out the group’s latest release, Songs for Birds and Bats.

The Black Watch Share Get Me Out of Echo Park

Of course, The Black Watch never hold back from writing material; for fans, they’re almost always on your mind, like the fuzzier pop version of Guided by Voices. Today they announced a bunch of cool things, like a new LP featuring the great tune below, but they also seem to have put together a couple of fun compilations, you know, for the collectors out there trying to polish off their collection (one even has the band’s entire catalog on a USB). The guitar sound here is phenomenal, giving plenty of space for Fredrick to cast his hallowed croon while the rhythm section works beneath it all. This song appears on Magic Johnson, which will be released June 21st via Atom Records.

Wild Firth Share Nevermind Video

If you’ve missed they hype surrounding Wild Firth‘s new LP, then now’s your time to get in on the action, and what better way than by enjoying the group’s new video. The video is sort of a journey in and of itself, taking the viewer on a ride through a sort of hazy 80s style cut of landscape images; it fits pretty perfectly with the vibe of the tune itself. A fuzzy guitar opens things up, letting the vocals sort of work the listener into things. You could see where some bombast would be perfect as the tension builds, but the group, don’t go with the expected, dropping this gorgeous light jangling guitar pop to meld with the fuzzy feels. There’s a nice little vocal change right before the 2 minute mark, adding a wee bit of pop sensibility in the song’s latter half. I know you love it, so go grab Lawn Memory, out April 26th via Forged Artifacts.

Blushing Share Dream Merchants

Remember when we released Blushing‘s Weak EP? Yeah, that ruled. But, the band hasn’t slowed down since then, dropping a 7″ and now this new single as we await their full-length LP on the horizon. The song features the band’s signature approach to songwriting with guitars feuding in order to create this huge wall of sound…one that is eventually filled by Noe’s screeching guitar wail. Vocals intoxicate, swirling about in the shadows of the track, peaking as the melodies all smash into one another. It’s the perfect way to start off that sleepy Monday morning.

Brand New Fanclub Track

If you were to look over the last year, you’d realize how much we love Austin outfit Fanclub. They’ve got an energetic take on dream pop, letting jangling guitar lines meet up with samples and precision drum work, all the while Leslie lets her heavenly voice float on top. They just released their All the Same EP, but they’re back already with a brand new tune for your ears, and a video to boot! It’s as catchy as anything they’ve put out, with an old school style wash to the video giving some Flashback Friday vibes. Not sure if this means there’s a new EP on the horizon, but fingers crossed!
