Dentist Share New Video

Late last summer, New Jersey outfit Dentist released Night Swimming via Cleopatra Records. We gave the album and its singles solid praise when it dropped, and we were super fortunate to have the band play our ATH Day Party this week at SXSW. Now, the band have a brand new video for standout single “Alone in the Garden.” The video’s mostly a performance video, shot in various ways with fun little elements thrown into the mix; the song is a blistering bit of power pop, with just the right hint of dreaminess thrown in for good measure. The album is available to buy directly from the band HERE, or you can grab it from Cleopatra.

And…if you’re in Austin right now, they’ve got a show at 2 PM at Side Bar, and at 6 PM over at Hard Luck Lounge!

SXSW Artists Jonathan Bree Shares New Video

Last year Jonathan Bree gave us the brilliant Sleepwalking, but many in the States have never had a chance to see these tunes in the live setting. For me, Bree is at the top of my list of must-see acts during this week’s SXSW festival…and now we have a new video to reinforce that belief. This is one of the shorter tunes on the album, but it’s one that reminds me of the careful craftsmanship of Air, while looking upon the nostalgic history of lounge singers. He’ll be in Austin from the 13-17th, with shows every day…but if you’re not here, go grab Sleepwalking form Lil Chief Records.

Dehd Announce New Album

While the late 00s garage/surf re-hash got tired after a few years, it’s still one of my favorite sounds, particularly when it’s presented in a refreshing manner, like Chicago’s Dehd are doing. You can hear that sound immediately, matched by steadying percussion; it’s catchy too, but it’s the chorus that comes in right at the thirty second mark that really drew me into the song. It takes the track into an almost soulful ballad, though it always holds onto the band’s sense of exuberance with the “sha la la la” that crash at the end of the chorus. Catchy and nostalgic, this track makes the forthcoming Water LP very promising; it drops on May 10th via Fire Talk.

The BVs Share New Video

I thought the BVs outdid themselves last year with their EP and 7″ (KUS & Cloudberry). But, they’ve offered us this brand new video to go along with the announcement of their forthcoming LP, Cartography. A little tambourine lets you open the door, and once you’re inside, the song and video roll along on galloping percussion. It sets the song in motion, allowing for the warmth of the vocals to permeate the rest of the track as the guitar operates along some muted jangling to continue the pace. I love love love the extra guitar chords dancing around after the 2 minute mark, working perfectly to match the dreamy vocal notes. Their new LP will be out on March 14th via Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten.

Listen to More Martha

It seems like pop-punk bands are once again a dime-a-dozen, although admittedly there’s an abundance of more talented acts. So, let me clear the rest out of the way, the only band you might need right now is Martha. Their new album Love Keeps Kicking is non-stop hits, filled with catchy choruses and huge riffs that led me to playing my meanest air-guitar as I walked my daughter through our suburban neighborhood. This tune below is just one of the many great numbers, dealing with the subject of a shitty situation in a surprisingly uplifting manner. This band rules. This song rules. This album rules. Get a copy when Dirtnap drops it in April.

New Music from Dorio

You might have seen our poster for the ATH vs SOTO party (and if not, go HERE) leading you to wonder aloud who on Earth is Dorio? Well, you’ve likely heard Mr. Chaz Doriocourt in some various fashion over the past few years in Austin, and now you can sample his new project below. It’s a really strong pop vibe; I really appreciate the various layers in the song’s arrangement…a nice surprise. Even better, there’s a video with Chaz clowning about and living life to the max with a huge grin upon his face. Such a good tune you don’t wanna sleep on.

Even More Stella Donnelly

I’ve pretty much been riding high on the Stella Donnelly train since her performances at last year’s SXSW festival. Luckily, her Beware the Dogs LP isn’t too far off in the distance, so why not celebrate with another gem. This number has a little bit more spirit in the way the guitars cut across the tune; her voice still sparkles, no matter whether she’s delivering lines or drawing out the chorus. I think ultimately, her delivery of everything’s quite smart; she seems to have this sly wit and playfulness that draws in listeners and begs them to be better humans…it’s a theme throughout the LP, in my opinion. Secretly Canadian will release the album on March 8th.

Jackie Mendoza Announces Debut EP

Usually, I don’t like to hype on whatever the big blogs are hyping on, but I’m already a huge fan of Jackie Mendoza, so I might as well continue that streak. For years I’ve been jamming out to Gingerlys, the band she fronted for some time, which was adored by indiepop nerds all over. Interestingly, while her solo work definitely feels like her, it’s great to see how expansive her sound has gotten. Samples create this ethereal world where her vocals walk like ghosts through gurgling bleeps and bloops, which seems exactly the vibe they chose for the video here. LuvHZ EP will drop on April 26th via Luminelle. You can also jump back to last week and check out Jackie’s responses to our SXSW questionnaire HERE. Hopefully I can run into her at the festival and discuss her reggaeton appreciation.
