Belaver Shares Driver Video

We wanted to wrap up today with this great track from Belaver, the work of B.E. Godfrey (also of listenlisten). His latest tune is a combination of soft melancholic pop music, spliced with sample audio that runs across the track, fitting perfectly into the visual presentation of the tune. The more I listen to it, the more I hear a similarity to some of the old Pedro the Lion or Eels records, using wordplay to evoke the emotion, while the music merely adds to the song’s mood. It’s one of those tunes that draws you in, you spin it ten times, and you still can’t escape it; it ingrains itself in your mind. See for yourself.

The Black Drumset Share the Last Beat of the Last Elk Heart

When you spend a lot of time in a music community, you begin to learn who to follow and who to watch; the good people always lead you to more good people, like those who’ve played with The Black Drumset. Their latest single is likely to entrance listeners, both in its visual representation (seen below) but also in the rhythmic pulse of the song. Electronics jab at the listeners ears, sputter in and out of focus, all the while the drum work rides the vibe, minimal and primal, beating with your heart. The video features the song’s lead character, in statuette form, spinning and circling amidst pulsing shadows and light. It’s a mindfuck of the most brilliant sort; Charged, the new LP, will be released on March 8th.

Daisy O’Connor Shares Still Life off Ether EP

Austin’s Daisy O’Connor is ready to share her hard work with everyone this week; she’ll drop her Ether EP this Friday. She’s graced us with one of the standout tracks, set to footage of the Hill Country rolling behind an image of herself. It’s a special number, beginning with Daisy softly draping her voice atop a fairly bare piano line; there’s cascading guitar and soft percussion, adding to the emotional draw. But, just after the 2 minute mark, the song begins to swell. The piano is more emphatic, strings emerge and that guitar dances in with a solo of its own, capping off the tune gorgeously. It’s a powerful tune, but just one of the handful that will appear on Ether; you can catch Daisy at Cosmic Coffee & Beer on Sunday (2/10) if you’re in the Austin area.

Wand Announce Double Album

How does Wand keep growing and evolving, all the while still sounding wholly incredible? As they announce their new double LP, Laughing Matter, it comes with this wondrous new single. It begins by teasing you with this measured guitar line over piano and drums, all before Cory even enters the picture just after the 1 minute mark. Once he makes his vocal appearance, backed by Sofia in the distance, the song takes on a more elegant tone…like a far less pretentious Radiohead; it’s accessible, yet still relies upon the musicianship that’s made the band so powerful over the last few years. It’s a musical adventure, and we should all welcome that. Look for the new LP via Drag City on April 19th.

Jim Clements Shares New Video

Near the end of 2018, Jim Clements released A Failure, and he comes back today with this video to celebrate the album’s standout “The Advice Song (Just Give Up).” The video is fairly simple, with the lyrics set atop light animation that plays upon the shadows. The song, however, has deeper meaning than what might be on the surface. Clements isn’t trying to be mean or degrading; he’s trying to advise you that it’s best to accept the reality that you live in, embrace that world and then move forward; he doesn’t want us to dance upon false hopes and promises that it will get better. Sure, it’s grim, but it’s real. Stream it below.

Stella Donnelly Shares Another Tune

Last year, when we were treated to several Stella Donnelly sets, I was left greatly impressed; she stunned with little more than her voice and guitar amidst drunken crowds crammed into non-traditional venues. But, while spending a good amount of time with Beware of Dogs these past few weeks, I’ve been really impressed with the arrangements throughout, just as you’ll hear on “Lunch.” There’s Stella up front with lightly strummed guitar, but behind her hangs this solemn piano tune while strings sweep in all the emotions you’d ever want in a song. The drums have this almost splattered sound, like an egg crashing into a wall, but it fits the tune perfect, as do the backing vocals chiming in at various points. For those of us who only got to see her solo sets, you’re going to really fall in love with her work when you hear all that’s gone into the sounds on the new LP, out March 8th.

Digging This New FEWS Tune

FEWS are yet another act in a long line of ridiculously talented Malmo based bands, and with their new LP on the horizon, it’s time we give this new tune a spin. It’s got this natural movement and sharpness to the guitars, akin to what I remember from that one good Bloc Party album…though more in an angular arty way, as opposed to the dance rhythms. What really sold me, however, was the sort of cool indifference of the chorus, polished off to leave you with this driving groove you can’t escape. The band’s Into Red will be released on March 1st via Play It Again Sam.

New Stuff from Jess Ribeiro

Late last year, before we started dropping all that list nonsense, Jess Ribeiro released a new tune; she’s back again with another new track/video for you. This tune has a sort of cosmic pop vibe, one that seems build for those drives from Texas through into the dusty horizons heading out West. Ribeiro’s voice has this nice smokiness to it, which only furthers that meandering vibe of the music that pulsates just beneath her. She hasn’t released a full length since 2015, but these last two powerhouse singles are incredible, so maybe there’s still hope 2019 will see a new Jess release…though is she’s stoked to just drop great track after great track, I’ll be here listening.

Today’s Catchy Martha Jam

I’m really hopeful that the new Martha record will make waves over here, hopefully encouraging the band to do a lengthy tour that includes Austin on this go-round. The band craft some of the catchiest pop-punk around, and Love Keeps Kicking is sure to fulfill on the continued progress of the hit-making machine. I love a band that can match the vocals, the drums and the guitars all at once, crashing down with this euphoric feeling that makes you happy to be alive. The video even has a nice little breakdown near the end, or an interlude, just to tease us with another round of hooks. The new record drops on April 1st via Big Scary Monsters/Dirtnap Records.

Paul Bergmann and The Fair Moans Release New Single

Over the last several years, Paul Bergmann has been mentioned here quite frequently. He’s been able to craft his solo work around this powerful balladry that’s continued to suck me into his world. This week, he’s sharing his work with his band The Fair Moans, drawing on the musical imperfections that exist in his musical journey. This tune has this natural darkness to it, whether intentional or not, something like Cave or Cohen would present us with; it’s brooding and damning, yet all the while captivating. It’s easy to get lost in the tones of this one, even with the grainy imagery of the video too. Look for Make Yourself at Home, the new release from the group, on February 15th.
