Dot Dash Release Video for Unfair Weather

I’ve already encouraged you to go give Proto Retro a thorough listen, but in case you keep ignoring me, I’m going to continue to give you a healthy dosage of Dot Dash. They just dropped this mostly live footage video for album standout “Unfair Weather.” This track puts the group’s crystalline guitar pop tendencies on display…you know, the sort everyone whose anyone is trying to pull off these days. Plus, the rhythm section is always on point, which gives the guitar work space to sort of meander around the perfect harmony. Schaus Shares Video for Unread

Schaus is an artist from the Portland region, crafting pop music as he sits fit. Recently, he released an EP title Quite Okay, and quietly its slid into my musical rotation. His voice has some fluxuating tones, moving up and down in his register, occasionally following with rapidity like its trying to catch up with someone. Musically, he’s employing electronic elements to give the track a natural bounce, which contributes to a sense of playfulness…something that’s always important for this listener. The video takes some autobiographical ideas and turns them into a natural story that follows the track’s theme of appreciating and being appreciated…or does it? Schaus won’t let on as to how much is truth, but does it really matter? You’ll get lost in the song, regardless.

Elizabeth Shares Video for Burn It All

Up until now, Elizabeth has been the driving force behind Aussie outfit, Totally Mild. She already dropped one incredible album this year with the group, but now she’s stepping up her solo game. This song has been floating out on the Split Singles Series, but now it gets a gorgeous video treatment, giving me one more chance to share the tune with you. If you’re just sitting around, waiting for a great voice to hit you, then buckle up buckaroo, because this one here is great. She’s just so powerful, and yet so calming at the same time. Hopefully we get more like-minded solo work from her real soon.

Disheveled Pop from Repo Fam

Repo Fam is the new project of Baltimore’s Michelle Pena, and according to the one-sheet, her songs share the approach of filmmakers in creating images that are emotive. Pena does so on this video with that discordant twang of the guitar; it sort of stomps on your eardrums as the vocals playfully prance around your inner ear canal. The drums, though dampened in the mix, have this almost intoxicating tribalism, drawing you deep into the cavernous craft of that is “Skip to My Lou.” Repo Fam will release the self-titled LP via Gentle Reminder Records on September 28th.

 

Tears Run Rings Return

Well, perhaps return isn’t the proper word choice, as Tears Run Rings have been with us most recently in 2016 with their LP In Surges. Now, they’ve popped back up with a brand new EP for one of our favorites, Shelflife and Deep Space Recordings. You’ll find below the staples that brought the group into the shoegaze realm; it features melodic guitars with just the faintest hint of distortion, waiting to erupt into a classic shimmering atmospheric. Vocals live beneath the mix, almost like faint musical whispers working behind the scenes. Feels like its too good to miss out on this one. The Somehwere EP will drop October 19th.

Weakened Friends Announce Debut LP

Don Giovanni has pretty reliable tastes, and it looks like the label has secured another success story, today announcing the debut LP from Weakened Friends. Founding member, Sonia Surino has this incredibly distinctive voice; it almost seems like a nervous tick, almost something primal and uncontrollable. This lends itself well to the band, as you can feel the passion in her delivery, often times culminating in the crashing of cymbals and distortion. There’s a little polish after the minute and a half mark, giving a nostalgic nod to 90s college radio classics. Look for Common Blah to drop on October 19th.

Papercuts Are Back

Jason Quever has always seemed to work on his own terms. He’s recorded your favorite band, and he’s sporadically released his own work under the Papercuts moniker. As of late, he’s been hinting at new stuff, and finally it’s before us; plus, he signed with one of our favorite labels, Slumberland. The song has an interesting opening, with varying lines taking you in different directions…there’s a light-hearted bouncing line while a forlorn acoustic is strummed. It sets you up for a balancing act between two worlds, leaving the perfect opening for Quever to enter with his voice. I like to hear the intimate little details he adds to his work, and there are definitely a few hiding in here from the casual ear. So, jump right in, all the way in, and ready yourself for Parallel Universe on October 19th.

New Silver Girl Shares Starlight City

Finnish outfit New Silver Girl have a new album on the horizon for October, and today we’re happy to share with you the latest single. This tune has a bit of a glam glitz to it, and not just because of the video attire; it also has this slight vocal hiccup that recalls some of Bowie’s best vocal inflections. But, there’s something polished and glossy about the tune, perhaps due to producer Gordon Raphael, who also worked with the Strokes and Hinds. He knows his way around taking the gritty details and turning them into rock n’ roll gems; this is another such occasion. Look for the album to drop in late October via Finland’s best, Soliti Music.

Still More from Still Corners

I can’t get enough of the latest record from Still Corners, dropping this Friday via Wrecking Light. This song was one of the standouts for me for the last few weeks, before it dropped yesterday as a new single. While it still hangs its hat on the smoky dream pop qualities the duo has offered us, there’s seemingly an influence of the band’s Texas relocation lurking through. You can hear it in the opening guitar lament, as well as in the song’s way way back as those same lines permeate the front of the mix. Another mesmerizing number with subtle Texas tones? Yea…I’m in; be sure to grab Slow Air this Friday in stores!

New Video from Moonlover

I wrote about Moonlover earlier this year as Quang Dinh was readying his album, Thou Shall Be Free…and now I wanted to share this video for the album’s “Wedding Day.” At times, it feels as if you’re approaching some beach front property in an arid climate, but the solemnity in Dinh’s voice also seems to lend itself to heartache…operating on the dynamic between dark and light. The video offers that same contrast, with black images moving upon lighter backgrounds. If the song piques your interest, then be sure to go grab the album HERE.
