Just Jam Snoffeltoffs

There are bits of pieces of this new single from Snoffeltoffs where I’m completely baffled; they juxtapose various genres and styles right next to each other, and all in such quick succession that I just keep going back to press play. Opening with a deep chord being plucked and spoken vocals; seems like a striking solemnity. Suddenly, guitars shuffle beneath your feet and the band’s kicking up their feet and rocking out. The core of this song’s stuck in my head, and I think you’ll be the only one that can get it out. Look for the group’s second LP to drop later this year.

 

Here’s That New Courtney Barnett

Courtney Barnett has been teasing us all week long with a new album, and today you finally get a chance to enjoy a complete new single. I love how the track opens with her casual guitar work before she blasts into a heavier portion of the tune with her foot stomped down on that distortion pedal. Pretty sure tons of folks will be relishing this song, not to mention the deserved fawning and anticipation that comes with a Barnett album cycle. Tell Me How You Really Feel will be out on May 18th via Mom + Pop/Milk Records.

New Amen Dunes Tune

Amen Dunes is sinking deep into the territory of entrancing psychedelia; the latest single from the group is nothing short of an intoxicating journey deep into the caverns of your own mind. The central groove that operates behind this song seems to have roots in pop music of long ago, almost tribal in nature. Layer after layer of atmospherics and electronic pulses are laid atop that tribal mix, awaiting the slight warble of the vocals. It’s like this beautiful landscape where half the people on the lawn are listening to Spiritualized while others groove to the remnants of acid house. The band’s new album Freedom will be released on March 30th via Sacred Bones Records.

Premiere: Family Video Drops New Tune

You might remember a few weeks back that we dropped news that Family Video would be releasing a new album on Lost Sound Tapes; Long Time Listener, First Time Caller will be released on March 16th. The video below is for one of the standout tracks from the LP, offering listeners a glimpse of the quiet bedroom pop being crafted by J. King. The song sounds fragile, like it could break in your hands, yet the emotional appeal washes over you; it seems so personal that you almost feel like you shouldn’t be listening. I love the way the guitars pick up just before the 1:30 mark, giving an ever so slight touch of energy. Pre-Orders for the new cassette can be found HERE.

 

Jonathan Bree Gets You Ready for Valentine

Not in the mood for Valentine’s Day? Fair enough, and artist Jonathan Bree seems to be in the same boat with his new video for “Valentine.” The lyrics favor getting to know someone over trite things associated with valentines candy hearts. Seems an important message, but more to the point, I continue to marvel at Bree’s musical accomplishments. The production on this track is pretty minimal, with simple percussion, and short little guitar to fill in the space behind Bree’s voice. Of course, there’s a nice chorale group backing him up as well, which provides a nice juxtaposition to Jonathan’s natural bass vocal tones. Lyrically, musically and visually, Jonathan Bree is ever-charming; his new album Sleepwalking will be out on May 4th via Lil Chief Records.

Fascinating Number from CMON

Some tunes seem so out of place in the current landscape, that they fascinatingly draw you to their sound. This single from CMON definitely bares modern technological touches, but it also wears the pants of a very 80s sound. The steady percussion alone reminds me of any number of tunes I saw on MTV as kid; there’s also a spritely spirit it to it, something giving you an inherent bounce that you can’t ignore. Plus, the video for their new track is visually stimulating, so they’re hitting you on all fronts. They’ll be releasing their self-titled EP on February 23rd.

Lowpines Record Come On Chaos Live

If you haven’t heard of Oli Deakin’s Lowpines project, then perhaps this a great introduction for you. He’s perched atop a rooftop somewhere in Brooklyn, backlit by the falling (or is rising) sun. You can hear the air flowing through his lips as he delivers the vocals, providing you with an immediate closeness. I love how the video pans into his picking on the guitar, as that adds to the ornate quality of his songwriting, giving each note deserved attention. If this is the sort of tune you’re looking for, you’ll find more like-minded tracks on the new album In Silver Halides; it’s being released on February 23rd.

Enjoy This New Dusted Tune

While Brian Borcherdt is probably best known as part of Holy Fuck, I’m really excited for the release of his new side project, Dusted. This song had me from the get-go, utilizing a steady percussive stomp, almost a march to keep the pace. Guitars ring out in the thick of the mix with little flourishes of keys and what nots rounding out the tune. Seemingly simple, its brevity keeps you from finding yourself bored…and interestingly, the tune closes with the same lyrical line “there’s no ledge to coax you from.” Blackout Summer is the new LP, dropping April 6th via Polyvinyl.

Brand New Track from The BVs

The BVs won me over last year with the release of Speaking From a Distance, and they’re readying their brand new EP, Interpunktion for release next week! Today, the band are sharing the EP’s statement piece, an almost 9 minute opus of wonderful guitar work. You get the impression that you’re in a scene driving through an unnamed countryside, only the car’s going slowly, letting you soak up every last chord the band delivers. Chords twinkle, hint at jangling, but have this spirited calm that completely captivates listeners. But, don’t fret BVs fans, as several of the tracks on the EP still feature lyrical content, but you’ll have to grab it from the band’s label, Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten to pick it up on February 9th.

Premiere: Panda Riot Release Video for Night Animation

Chicago’s Panda Riot have a pretty heavy sound, but while the song’s construction seems filled to the brim, the pristine vocals knife their way, giving off a softened vibe that gives the song a shimmering quality. At times the electronics pulse and throb, highlighting the internal hooks; they also hit hard in unison with the ringing of the guitars, creating a wall of magic noise. The video, which was shot by Jeffrey Nesker seemingly rides the same vibe of the song, but instead of the heady electronics versus pop, you’ve got images of day versus night…a fitting touch that doesn’t go unnoticed. The group will release their new album Infinity Maps on February 14th, just in time for you to share it with your loved one.
