Popper Burns Drop New Video

I owe my fandom of Popper Burns entirely to Big Bill, who really brought the band to my attention when we were first putting together Slack Capital. Since that moment, I’ve been a ravenous fan, trying to hit up as many shows to catch the group’s tenacious live set. They’re preparing to release Pure Disgust this April, and in anticipation they’ve teased us with this incredible video for “Sun Tan.” The track captures exactly why this band is so important; they’re angular guitar lines seem increasingly dangerous as the track forces forward, but it’s offset by the vocal delivery from Patti Melt, steadying the boat to allow accessibility for the masses. Definitely an act to keep an eye on this year!

New Music from Pale Lights

There’a an abundance of great tunes coming from Pale Lights, one of my favorite acts that features members of Comet Gain and Crystal Stilts. Just Friday the band dropped the brand new Jean, Bring the Flowers EP, highlighted by the delightful lead track, which features the video below. But, even better news is that we’ll be treated to a new LP titled The Stars Seem Brighter, which comes out on December 15th via Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten. I’ve attached a single from that tune below as well, as you can never have too much of Pale Lights in your life. Looks like the year isn’t quite done with brilliant new music.

Olden Yolk Announce Debut Album on Trouble in Mind

When listening to this track, the knowledge that Olden Yolk is the project of Shane from Quilt might inform your listening. That’s well and good, but what you should also note is the indulgence in the true atmosphere of psychedelia crafted in the track below. Notes billow like smoke in a dimly lit room, with time taken to really let the guitar licks to find their own way into the world. The vocal performance is quite captivating as well, especially when joined by a heavy vocal accompaniment that’s sure to entrance you. The debut self-titled LP will be released by Trouble in Mind on February 23rd.

New Cats of Transnistria Video

The beautiful haunting of Cats of Transnistria is set to overwhelm you today with the new video for “Candy Man.” The opening moments of the song are dominated by the deepened tones of string arrangements, sprinkled with atmospheric flourishes behind. It’s actually a sparse track, even when the angelic vocals twist and turn inside the track, allowing the audience to extract their own emotions from the song. A dark wash on the video only reinforces the solemnity offered by the Finnish trio, and we expect nothing more than an enduring classic when the band release Opium early next year via their label, Soliti.

Jonathan Bree Releases New Jam

Ever since I heard the single “Weird Hardcore” I’ve been a fairly devoted Jonathan Bree fan. He’s constructing these minimal pop pieces, usually with an artistic bent that comes out via various videos. On this new single, he’s joined by Clara Vinals on vocals, who offers a soft juxtaposition to Bree’s deepened tones. The rest of the tune is a subtle it of rolling pop; imagine “Young Folks” stripped down to the bones to ride out the natural groove. Look for this track to appear on Sleepwalking, which will be released on March 2nd.

New Video from The Spook School

Our continued allegiance to the Spook School must go on…especially as the band are readying the release of Could it Be Different for next January via Slumberland. This track features Anna on the vocals (who apparently is a tiger), while the group employ their classic buzzsaw guitars and bouncing rhythm section. One of my favorite attributes about the group in this video, which is also present in their live setting, is the enjoyment they seem to have making music together; even with serious subject matter they always manage to bring a light-heartedness to the affair. Infectious pop at its best, so get ready for the rest come January 26th.

Cross Record and Jonathan Meiburg Are Loma

Sub Pop have a winner with Loma; I’m going to come out and say it right now. The project is a new musical partnership between Cross Record and Jonathan Meiburg, so it should be no surprise that we’d fawn over the release. And, to be honest, if one was to concoct this mixture fictionally, the actual band sounds precisely what one might create. Emily’s voice seems to be at the front, with Meiburg’s deepened, operatic tones just behind hers; the track unfolds ever so carefully, allowing for instrumental flourishes that are important in the work of their own respective projects…particularly the falling piano line that enters periodically. It’s ornate, textural pop, and we’ll get to hear the entirety of their self-titled debut album on February 16th.

 

Jesse Marchant Returns with Illusion of Love

The man once revered as JBM simply goes by Jesse Marchant, but what hasn’t changed is his elegant songwriting. He’s just announced Illusion of Love, his latest release, and with that announcement comes this stunning video and single. Marchant seems to have delved deeper into the accompaniment around his style, filling this track with a beautiful piano movement and string arrangements, immersing the listener in the fullest emotional experience; you match that with the powerful video and you have a recipe for success. This new LP will drop on January 26th via No Other.

Fresh Pop Punk from Breaklights

Austin’s Breaklights headed up to Fort Collins’ Blasting Room to record their latest EP; it’s the famed studio for so many of your favorite pop punk rockers. Of course, that’s an easy way to describe the band’s sound, though I sort of hear a hint of Matt Skiba in the vocals…not a bad thing by any means. For me, the best thing about a good pop punk rocker is the hook, and these guys have that for days; I put them right alongside our favorites Basketball Shorts as best pop-bunkers in town. Look for their Don’t Try So Hard EP on January 19th next year!

Ride Off Into the Weekend with Sonny Smith

Sonny Smith is a songwriter who I adore. I’ve picked up everything he’s been involved in, from solo work to theater soundtracks to Sonny and the Sunsets. Today he’s announced his new album, Rod for Your Love, under his own name. It definitely wears that California-vibe; he manages to always carry an effortless cool. His press for the album promises a ‘fun, guitar-driven’ record, which could benefit us all. Toe tapping and innate hooks? Yea, that’s what Sonny’s great at. Stream the new video below; the LP drops on March 2nd via Easy Eye.
