Anthony Anzaldo from Ceremony Goes Solo

If you listen closely, you can hear remnants of Ceremony in the opening seconds of Anthony Anzaldo‘s new single from his solo effort. But, you’ll be surprised that there’s a huge polish of pop atop the mix, carefully covering some of that post-hardcore vibe, whilst still remaining true to himself. I think the best part of his performance comes via the chorus in which his voice soars to let out “we all die alone.” He’ll be releasing his eponymous solo debut later this year, but for now you can grab this track in a limited quantity from his label First Letter Press.

New Electronic Doom from Odonis Odonis

Sometimes when you strip down to the most minimal bits of your work, you come out with the best product. This might just be the case for Odonis Odonis, who are reported to have stripped down the instrumentation on their latest effort to synthesizers and electronic drums. I love how these guys make music that sounds like impending doom, but almost makes you beg for it; it sounds beautiful. There’s a moment on the latter half of the tune where they build the tension with tons of negative space, only to drop the vocals and beat back in one more time. Felte will be releasing the No Pop on October 20th.

New Video from Fresh and Onlys

Tomorrow is the day we’ll all get to hear Wolf Lie Down in its entirety, but before the release, Fresh and Onlys have given us one last video/track to steer us in the right direction. There’s a Dali-esque quality to the video, with shapes bending and dripping…not to mention splicing it with creative band shots. On the track, it’s a long burner, filled with some really great guitar playing atop the steady drum pace. I really like the production on all the songs we’ve heard, which is probably while I’ll be picking up the new record tomorrow from Sinderlyn.

I Missed This Mammoth Penguins Tune

You undoubtedly are aware of my Emma Kupa fandom. It seems like this is her year…she’s already released a great Hayman Kupa Band LP, she’s playing with Suggested Friends and in the last two weeks her band Mammoth Penguins have announced their newest album, John Doe. The angular chords chopping from the get-go kick off this new tune, allowing Kupa to rock a stellar vocal performance as the rest of the group fill the track with percussion. There’s almost a shuffling boogie from the chorus, keeping listeners hooked with that sugary pop vibe. Look for the new album on October 13th via WIAIWYA.

Cool Swagger from QTY

I wrote about QTY awhile back, and they just dropped a video for their latest single (which is slated to fit into their forthcoming album). Admittedly, the band rock a really simple rock n’ roll formula, but they carry it with such an effortless cool that it’s hard not to be captivated by their sound. You’re going to find yourself singing along in no time, hooked on the infectious quality lurking beneath the surface…I particularly enjoy the dual vocals that ride out the last minute of the tune. Look for the song on a 7″ from Dirty Hit, or wait for the soon to come LP.

King Krule Releases New Single

There’s something about King Krule aka Archy Marshall that makes his music intriguing. He’s able to wrap his mind around all sorts of genres, then incorporate them into his music. He’s written great rock n’ roll hits like “Easy Easy,” not to mention his production work with various hip-hop artists. Here, on his new single we have him offering up a slow croon of contemplation, accompanied by a Frank Lebon video. I love the stripped down vibe here, almost like a spoken-word poem written for listeners. With the new single comes a tour announcement, sadly without an Austin date.

Wand Release New Video

I continue to be impressed by the shifting sonics of Wand; I thought I had them pegged, but clearly not at all. This new video has some heavy handed indie rock riffs, but the way Cory’s voice is recorded in between those riffs gives off a slight Thom Yorke vibe…and then there’s that restless dream bit that floats in just after the 2 minute mark, punctuated by the ethereal notes seeping through your speakers. It closes with a bit of an emphatic jam (and clown dance), leaving me to remark that the song goes all over the place, only to stay stationery. At this point, its safe to assume that Plum is going to be a real joy to listen to, though exactly what we can expect, only the folks at Drag City (and the band) know…look for it on September 22nd.

Enjoy New TV Sets Music

If you’re spending your day looking for infectious pop music that you won’t be able to turn away from, then look no further than this great TV Sets track. This tune has the exuberance of acts like the Drums, yet you’ll find a soft underbelly of dreamy pop featured too; it’s a textural touch that’s not often employed, but the execution is spot on here. I always appreciate finding uplifting music with hints of contemplation. It’s okay to get carried away with joy while listening to this track, and we expect much more when the band drop their Elsewhere EP this Friday.

Cherry Release New Video

It doesn’t take much more than being signed to Lame-O Records for me to be attached to a band. But, in the case of Cherry and their latest song, they’ve already got me hooked. The video is gritty, moving across various mundane activities (though I’m attached to the backyard soccer scene) and splicing it with members of the band. Also, it has dogs. People love dogs. In the track itself you hear earnest guitar pop, with guitar lines reaching up to the angular heavens as the drums crash down and vocals drawl across the front of the mix. It’s sonically focused, yet relaxed in the delivery…all showing promise of the band’s forthcoming record, Dumbness, out on September 29th.

Caroline Says Drops Video

We’d be remiss if we didn’t support our friends in Caroline Says, especially considering they just dropped this brand new video and single. Plus, this is one of my favorite tracks on 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Cant Be Wrong; it has this almost dream pop vibe to it with understated jangling guitars, balanced perfectly by the heavy tones of Caroline’s voice. The group is quickly gaining new fans (even P4K got in on the action), so don’t be left out in the cold…get hip to Caroline Says! The record will drop on August 4th via Western Vinyl.
