Local Shows Tonight: Video Album Release + Nick Allison

videoI’m gearing up to go to as many great shows as I can this week, and it all starts this evening. Austinites have the chance to see tons of stuff, but tonight, here’s where you should be: Beerland or Hotel Vegas. Beerland will host the Video album release for the group’s new record…kicking off at 9 PM. Vegas has Nick Allison kicking off his tour with our friends Lochness Mobsters, as well as Lung Letters. Seems like Wednesday is destined for rock n’ roll. Stream tracks below and see what suits your fancy…regardless, you’ll be happy at either of these spots.

New Video from Crayon Fields

11703409_10153492077879181_8232890633749222260_oAfter being relatively quiet for the past few years while various members worked on other projects, Crayon Fields burst back into my heart with their new album, No One Deserves You. It’s a pop record of the best sort, filling your ears with delicious melodies and the entrancing voice of Geoff O’ Connor. One of the album’s best tracks just got a brand new video treatment, and the video has the perfect feel for both the song and the record. This is honestly one of my favorite tunes this year, and the video only reaffirms its power. Buy the album now from Chapter Music.

Electro-Pop from Oceans

efeEarlier in the year we brought you some smooth grooves from Oceans, the Finnish artist working with our friends over at Soliti Music; they just sent us a brand new track that we wanted to throw out to you in the middle of the week. It’s one of those electronic tunes that builds upon itself, propelled by a propulsive beat beneath the soulful lyrics that echo through your speakers. There’s something compelling in the simplicity of the approach to, which bodes well for the man behind the song, Efe Tekkanat. His new Thrill EP will be released by the label on October 30th. There’s also a video HERE if you’re into those sorts of things.

ATH Premiere: New Single from Video

videoAustin’s Video signing to Third Man Records might have come as a surprise to many, but what shouldn’t surprise you is how incredibly strong the band actually is at this point. Their “New Immortals” single had this huge power-pop feel, but in some way, it still felt rather dangerous. The B-Side, which is a live version of “Nothing Lasts Forever” brings on a barrage of noise and high-speed energy, punishing your ears in the best way. Singer Daniel Fried unleashes his best snarl through your speakers; he does so with such ferocity that one likely sees it as a call to incite a riot (in an orderly fashion; I don’t condone violence). Their full LP, The Entertainers, will be out via the label on October 30th, but you can grab the 7″ featuring this B-Side right HERE.

The band will be playing a release show too on October 28th over at Beerland.

The Bill Ball: An Interview w/ Eric Bill — October 9th @ Swan Dive

12042917_10103610812125518_894458247127330031_nWith all the buzz about Austin music dying and what not, I think it’s interesting to note that there have been a ton of like-minded individuals coming out to create their own curated shows. We did ATX Popfest, Raw Paw had the Alien Zine, Vegas has Good Vibrations and now there’s the Bill Ball at Swan Dive on October 9th. These things have always been around, but they seem to be gaining prominence as people try to create a sense of community here in town. I caught up with Eric Bill of the band Big Bill to grab some of his thoughts on the First Annual Bill Ball…and his band too. Read on for the answers and a video for the Bill Ball! Read more

ATH Spotlight: New Video + Single from Sweet Talk

DoublePerfectCover_iTunes-300x300I’m not going to lie to you; I think the newest album from Sweet Talk is one of my favorite records coming out of Austin this year. It’s a nice blend of power-pop and punk rock, hitting all the wrong notes while leaving you with memorable lines and singalong choruses. The band just released a video for their newest single, “Borrow Your Stuff,” and we’ve got it showing below in hopes you’ll be convinced, like me, that their new effort Double Perfect is something you need in your record collection this year. The LP will be released on October 16th via the esteemed 12XU.

Great New Video and Single from The Spook School

This song is for the math nerds and the pop fans, so be warned. Oh, and it’s also filled with exuberance like you w0n’t find anywhere else. At the beginning of the track, you’re seeing the Spook School build in their own brand of joyous pop, and then while the shouts of “I am bigger than a hexadecimal” are blasted, you can feel the band fueling up the tension. They unleash it as the video bursts through with a group of folks all happy to join in the bands proclamation. Still, don’t let the fun of the track take away that there’s still an underlying theme lurking here with the band, but I’ll let you (or them) come to terms with that. This song features on their new album, Try to Be Hopeful, which is out soon via Fortuna Pop.

Bright New Indiepop Single from Alpaca Sports

alpacaI’ve long been a fan of Alpaca Sports, who won me over with their early work for Dufflecoat Records, and now they’ve got a new mini-album, When You Need Me the Most, ready for your ears. In honor of the new work, they’re giving you a glimpse at what’s to come with this playful new video for fans. The song’s spectacular, and it should further push the band into the hearts of fans around the globe. I implore you to give it a listen/watch, then head over to Elefant Records for continued news on the band and their mini-album; it should be out this October.

New Tuff Sunshine Jam

tuffTuff Sunshine has been on my stereo a lot lately. There’s something about their blend of styles that’s been really attractive; I can hear glam, punk and even roots-rock coursing through their songs, so the diversity keeps things pretty interesting from start to finish. Still, it all has this anthemic touch to it, almost built to be blasted out of your nearest arena show (do they even do those anymore?). They just unleashed this video version of the song HERE, but I’ve got the song below for you to stream. Their album Fire in the Hero Building will be out on October 30th for those interested parties.

New Old Jonathan Bree Tune

jonathanI feel like I’ve given a lot of coverage to the jangling guitar types in the Oceanic area, so why not turn our attention to this beautiful piece of pop music from Auckland’s Jonathan Bree. Jonathan’s been working on this album for a bit, and it’s said to have a lot of classical influences from the likes of Tchaikovsky. Still, the construction and Bree’s vocal tones make him sound a little bit more like Jarvis Cocker, in my mind at least. He’ll be releasing A Little Night Music on October 23rd via Lil Chief Records. You can also view a great video for the song HERE.
