Premiere: Lung – Clown Car Video

Here we are again with another rad tune from the confines of Cincinnati, forever reminding us that labels like Feel It Records are the backbone of the current scene; this time they’re letting us share a great new tune from the duo, Lung. The entirety of the new record began with roots in the tune below, giving birth to this mystical character named the Swankeeper, and while the mythology behind the character grew up here, I’d love it if we merely focused on the musical side for a minute. Sharp drum hits from Daisy Caplan burst into the tune within seconds, letting Kate Wakefield start to deliver her vocal work. Not a moment later, you’re greeted with this cacophony of discord, billowing with anxiety and putting you on edge; I still marvel that this much danger and noise comes from Wakefield’s manipulation of the cello. In a sense, it reminds me of Sleigh Bells, building minimalist hooks in this artistically refreshing way; you’ll want to be sure you order a copy by the time the Swankeeper hits on May 30th.

Deary Share I Still Think About You Video

There’s a new little 7″ coming your way from UK outfit Deary, and they’ve completely indulged in the dreamy status for their latest number. This one feels like you’re standing on the shore of any number of beaches across the globe, the water continuously nibbling at your toes, with cascading guitars serving as echoes of other beach-goers. Or maybe you flip it over and the track takes you into outer space, as it clearly operates in this world where floating seems entirely possible, and entirely enjoyable, just sort of drifting in this purgatory above the rest of the world. The new 7″ comes out June 27th via Sonic Cathedral.

SAVAK Release American Vernacular

While the earlier tunes from Savak have embraced a matured indie rock ethos, they branch out into the farther reaches of the genre with their latest single. From its start, the track almost feels more atmospheric than anything, taking these spaced out sounds to sort of wash over the room before the thundering gallop of the drums sneaks into the picture. Here you get to hear the guitars spring to life, winding their way through the maze of ambient echoes, creating a path that the vocals can follow as they, too, sneak in slowly; they’re more spoken than sung, letting the brimming of the burn spring to life a little. If you dig, keep your eyes out for Squawk, which drops next week via Ernest Jenning/Peculiar Works!

Wombo Announce Danger in Fives

This is the news that I did not even know I needed, but my day just got better with news that Wombo have a new LP on the horizon. Their Fairy Rust LP stayed on for quite some time at my house, and this new track sees them furthering their song craft. Every note on this track seems perfectly placed, with the group employing negative space to let rhythmic notes give accent to the guitars. Sydney Chadwick’s voice is this mesmerizing power, drifting dynamically in and out of the tune, curling around ringing guitar notes like a beautiful haunt. Danger in Fives will be out August 8th via Fire Talk.

Fortitude Valley Release Sunshine State Video

Our pal over at Specialist Subject Records have already gotten a lot of ATH love this year, with new stuff from Don’t Worry and Soot Sprite…and now we have more reason to rejoice as they’ve scheduled a new LP for Fortitude Valley at the end of the Summer! It doesn’t take long for the group to embrace the carefree pop rock of similar acts like the Beths, bringing out these huge walls of riffs that get tightened around a really sweet melody. Songwriter Laura Kovic is using the song as a way to reach back and talk to her teenage self, perhaps circling back to reimagine who she is or was. There is no shortage of hooks in this track, and one can assume that Part of the Problem, Baby, will be just as such.

Ok Cool Announce Debut LP

I have been missing really solid female pop rock, akin to my personal favorite Weakened Friends…they’re currently on the road (no Austin show?!), so OK Cool get to fill my need! The band announce their debut LP today, and do it with a classic pop rock fashion, though I love them the most when they really stretch the vocals to their most guttural intentions. In the recording process for their debut, they kept the production to themselves, which gave them complete control to bridge the melodic moments with the aforementioned bite, leaving us with these hook-laden rockers. tThey’ll release Chit Chat on August 1st, and hopefully hit the road with an Austin date!

San Gabriel Announces Nights and Weekends

It’s hard to believe that Nights and Weekends is the debut album of former Austin resident, San Gabriel. We were fortunate to have him crush one of our legendary SXSW shows, and the hype around town was real. His ability to craft these synth pop gems that walk the line between pop and bedroom projects has always been one of his greatest gifts, and you can hear the melodic softness in his voice a he hangs the chorus “are we running out of time” out there for listeners. Music should make you feel good, and you’re going to find yourself in the feels when cranking this one up; Nights and Weekends hits August 15th.

Darren Hayman Readies New LP

All apologies for starting off your Friday with such a sobering tune, but new music from Darren Hayman (and his Electric Guitars) is always a pleasure, thus I wanted to begin our day with this sad tune. “Somebody just died” is about as heartbreaking of an opening as you’re going to find, and the song dwells in this solemnity, waiting for the careful craft to unfold along with Darren’s storytelling. He’s pulling these powerful emotions out of his guitar this go round, and in doing so, he’s celebrating the friend he’s lost. The instrumental breakdown, in this setting, feels like a musical salute to the deceased, shooting notes off into the ether. You’ll get to hear this track on Amazing Things, the new LP from WIAIWYA, out later this year!

Tan Cologne Share Infinity Video

When listening through the newest Tan Cologne single, I can’t escape the feeling of being in this dark fairy-land, somewhere akin to the Dark Crystal. Each little note seems to kind of hang, like some bit of magic dust, or in the case here, a bit of ash falling from the skies. And, the more I think on that, the more it feels like a spiritual seance with me dancing around a campfire, my shadow trouncing upon some desert backdrop. Interestingly, the vocals almost seem like they’re purely instrumental, building in texture to the track has this fluttering movement. They release Unknown Beyond on June 20th via Labrador Records.

Ryli Return with Come and Get Me

I love Yea-Ming Chen (musically, don’t get weird!), whether she’s covering the Velvet Underground, fronting the Rumours, or the springier side of pop with Ryli; the latter is where we have her popping in today, as the the band have just announced Come and Get Me, featuring this delight below. You can certainly hear all sorts of indiepop nods noodling about in this tune, though the interesting thing is how much springiness the rhythm section gives the track; it creates this almost danceable sound amidst a wall that feels like the noisier version of any number of great girl groups. If you’re not tapping your toes and grinning ear to ear, then we can’t help you any more. Unless, you grab the new LP before it drops on June 27th via Dandy Boy Records.
