Pachyman Drops Another New Single

New Adrian Quesada and new Pachyman? Clearly, I’m going to be operating with the world’s most chilled vibe today, especially as I sink into this Pachyman jam. He’s combining his love of dub and the chugging rhythm of the guitar with a bit of space-age industry. His vocal samples here are perfect, like little faint echoes you might hear bouncing down the hallways from afar. And sure, those little dub grooves rip, but I love the little synthetic notes and how they take the style and make it feel remarkably fresh. Then you hook it with the video where all you get is smiles, and I can absolutely not turn this one off! Another Place will be out on ATO Records on May 23rd.

Pleased to Meet You: Tee Templeton

It’s seems a rarity that a 66-year-old artist breaks through the noise to land with a debut, but Tee Templeton is definitely someone worth encountering today. He spent his life with his songwriting waiting patiently on the sidelines while he attended to his career and other life endeavors, but has now come back with his second single that’s really stuck inside my head. At first, the intricate opening took me aback, but as soon as the tune hits the 30 second mark, the tune completely shifts into Bolan/Bowie territory. I, of course, loved that, but those similarities move into other pop territories as the arrangement layers in strings that buoy the entirety of the track. Really mesmerized by this song.

Lawn Chair Return with Fancy New Single

You’re going to want to crank this one up, as German posse Lawn Chair are delivering a hook-laden rocker. In no time, you’re thrust in into a a circle pit, spinning you about before the band pull back to let the sharpness of the vocals take over. Claudia’s delivery is definitely a winner here, clever and pointe, riding on the rhythmic pulse that’s luring beneath the surface of the song. There’s a bit of melody when they move into the chorus, but the group still keeps things on a knife’s edge, so if you’re not punch dancing in your room right now, please consult a doctor. Hopefully we hear more from the group real quick, as I just can’t get enough.

Adrian Quesada Announce Boleros Psicodelicos II

I completely realize I’m going to come across like a jerk-store here, but I 100% love Adrian Quesada‘s solo stuff more than the Black Pumas; I know that’s sacrilegious, but just calling it like I see it. I was gifted an early listen to this fresh track from Boleros Psicodelicos II, which features Cuco, and I’ve pretty much been playing it non-stop. For starters, Cuco’s voice is just ridiculous here; it doesn’t feel out of place in a classic bolero sense, and in fact, almost seems like the genre was built just for him. But, that wouldn’t work if there wasn’t this incendiary blend of synthetic keys, percussion and guitar, all thrown together in this masterful fashion that almost makes it feel like the score to an unwritten Robert Rodriguez vampire movie, yet totally pop at the same time! I freaking love it, and am excited to hear all of Boleros Psicodelicos II when it drops on June 27th via ATO Records. Now, if I can only convince him to do his take on Chicha, then we’ve got a party!

Stray Fossa Share Change the Film

I like to start my mornings with a bit of lightness, maybe some sprightly energy mixed in, which made this new Stray Fossa tune a stunner of a track to kick off your day. Of course, you’ll hear those dreamy guitars that are all the rage in my usual listening rotation, but I really adore the way the vocals embrace a gentle spirit, balancing the sharpness of the riffs and the magic of the melody. For some reason, it feels like a Ducks Ltd song stuck in the kindness of the Sarah Records era, and I’m absolutely all here for that. It’s the first single from the band this year, and fingers crossed they bring us more delighting sounds such as those below.

Foamboy Drop Edibles

If your life doesn’t have enough fun in it on this Monday morning, might we suggest that you try out a little Foamboy? It’s the perfect track to get your body bouncing and your smile creeping up the side of your face. You’ll probably even laugh a little at the lyrical content, as the narrator shares their experience with edibles gone wrong. All of the story gets set to this spinning bit of bouncy pop, where every note has my tapping my toes and swaying from side to side. This is where indiepop sounds start to take a risk and truly get out there, yet never shying away from our need for a little joy, even in our own space. Look for the group’s new Lime, Knife, Time, Hand EP to hit with more pop on April 4th.

Buffet Lunch Drop Whitsun Sound Video

One of the record’s I’m looking forward to the most in April is the latest LP from Scottish act Buffet Lunch; they’ve got this sound that feels like a study in indie rock, taking the elements that have been in favor, then sort of spinning them as their own yarn, pulling away from the immediacy to reveal a more thought-provoking brand. This jam is in no rush here, trickling on these little samples and discordant rings, steadying before the vocals come in. Things only get more harrowing from there, with the shredding manipulating your senses, almost pushing you away with its sharpness and grating nature; the group push you, twist you, and beg your expectations to evolve with them. They’ll release Perfect Hit via Upset the Rhythm.

Kick Back with Liam Mour

Hitting some soft rock tones, I wanted to move into a little bit of a different space now with Liam Mour‘s latest track. The German artist is a master at beat work, and this one fuses a bit of retro breaks with futuristic sonics that elevate every note. I love the way the song feels like a tranced out club groove, then erupts with this wall of fuzzy guitars around the 1.30 mark, really guiding and twisting the song into its own brand of magnificence. The heaviness of that moment carries in and out, but ultimately fades as the song returns to its more sedate nature. This tune features on the new All Set Lets Swim EP, out March 28th.

Night Beats Announce New 7″

Ya’ll know the ATH crew will always back some new music from the Night Beats. Danny Lee Blackwell has some masterful way of channeling all our favorites genres like old school R&B and psychedelia, then sprinkling it in with a bit of Texas flavor. This new single seems spot on for those descriptors, almost like it’s a channeling late-era Temptations, with the focus definitely revolving around the R&B realm; there’s this smoothness that I think Blackwell often doesn’t get credit for, at least in bringing it to his performances. Definitely a groovy number that reminds of his songwriting and continuous progression into all the things that make Night Beats great. A new limited 7″ is scheduled for release via Fuzz Club/Suicide Squeeze on April 11th.

Broncho Release I Swear Video

I don’t know what’s in the water, but the new Broncho stuff is totally my vibe right now. They’ve changed up the construction, and while there’s clearly their usual pop sentiment, there’s this fogginess that drips across the singles we’ve heard, like the tune below. They even take that into the way their video footage is being shot, incorporating that into the wash of the film. You’ll also find a slight little tonal shift around the 1:40 mark that really solidifies the track’s pop sentiment, twisting it into a momentary bedroom pop gem. They’ll release Natural Pleasure, the new LP, on April 25th. They’ve got huge tour dates from June through August, with a July 18th date here in Austin at the Mohawk!
