The Tubs Share Chain Reaction

Since my earliest days as a music listener, I’ve been drawn towards distinctive voices; the sort that stand in your mind, yet refuse to be replicated. Owen ‘O’ Williams voice is one such instance, and here he’s running up and down the gambit, racing to keep pace with the furious punk grind of the guitars. Then, he shucks the chains of keeping pace to work his own melodic focus into the feverish push of his bandmates. You can probably make some comparisons to Royal Headache, particularly when the song opens, but the Tubs have completely built their own sound, and we can’t wait until Cotton Crown drops on March 7th via Trouble in Mind Records.

Chest Spill Blood On Your Doorstep

As rain pours down outside the windows here, I’m drawn to this new chest. single, a track that offers up a sonic sense of impending doom. They’re spitting out post-punk in the fashion that we’ve all been drawn towards the last few years, though there’s a bit more anger in the musical element, as the guitars feel more enraged as they ring out through my speakers. Lyrically, the message is striking, particularly as my government dismantles aid and programs of humanity; it’s all about the distance growing between rich and poor and how we’ve normalized those conditions. If you’re into it, the group drop All Good Things Ends on February 28th via Howlin Banana.

Join Announces Debut LP for Keeled Scales

Our good buddy Tony over at Keeled Scales has a great ear for bringing new voices to the masses, and that’s what I’m expecting from Joni when her Things I Left Behind album is released this Spring. Today, you get the title track of said album, and there’s some balancing of tonal notes that make the sound subtly striking. A snappy percussive element is working beneath the entire time, so you get some natural movement propelling the pace. But, more importantly is the way the guitar embraces a heavy vibe, and by that, I mean just the weight of the notes (it’s not metal, folks!). This contrasts perfectly with the way vocals come across like little intimate whispers shared partners. Look for Things I Left Behind on April 11th; it’s being released by Hand in Hive in the UK.

Broncho Share Funny Video + Announce Natural Pleasure

Broncho has been away for a few years, and while that may have temporary halted their continuous rise as indie rock stars, the announcement today of Natural Pleasure should very much put them back in the limelight. This tune below feels very Oklahoma to me, and I’m not sure Ryan would see it this way, but the first 20 seconds of this track feels like an homage to Colourmusic, working in a cyclical hook that comes and comes and comes. It opens the tune into this sort of hazy wash of bouncing grooves, bubbling and popping in all the right spots. The way the rhythm section grooves and turns throughout keeps the song moving, though the twist and curl of the vocals you in this dream state. Wonderful to have the band back, and their new LP will be out April 25th.

New Silver Girl Drop Loud Love Video

Finnish outfit New Silver Girl have been on our radar since some of their earliest releases via our friends over in Soliti. This year, they’re dropping a new LP titled Wild Carnation, and we’ve got the group’s latest single for you to throw down. You’re certain to hear a bit of psychedelic swagger in this single, but there’s this hallucinogenic fire that weaves its way into the song. In going with this approach, the group continues their cinematic nature, blending rock elements with a theatrical presence that sees the band moving all over the musical map. Be sure to keep it real with the breakdown boogie in the song’s latter half.

Did You Check Out the new Roi Turbo?

Digging deep this week to kind of cover all the hits, so my brain’s clearly all over the place. That being said, I’m totally enjoying this space-aged ditty from Roi Turbo. Okay, maybe it’s not a ditty, as it’s purely instrumental, but there’s definitely enough movement that the euphoria won’t fade. They take the song up, as you can see in the video, working to craft an industrial energy, then they pull back, and just as you are about to leave the dance floor and grab a cup of water, they pick right back up and push into the more explorative territory. It’ll have you bobbing your head and tapping your toes, so crank it up and get busy.

Dean Wareham Shares That’s the Price of Loving Me

Around my house, there’s been a lot of hubbub over Dean Wareham; my wife and I are fighting over who gets to watch the kids while one of us goes and watches Dean do a Galaxie 500 set. But, today, let’s turn our attention to his current endeavor, his new solo LP. While Wareham’s voice always has power over me, the drums on this single are what I keep shuffling back to; they’re offering up a simple gallop, and in that, they also seem to throw in a little bit of a tropicalia influence. Textured string arrangements further the depth, with the guitar working in between the vocal stabs, with the whole of the song taking on this ethereal plot twist that you’ll adore. That’s the Price of Loving Me is out on March 28th via Carpark.

Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward Announce Pure Candy

For all the trends and all the subreddits, it’s always gratifying to know that there are artists like Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward who seem to revel in the simplicity of the songwriting milieu. Today we come to you with news that the two will join forces for Pure Candy, their third collaborative LP. Our first sneak peek is a recipe of sorts; it’s a concoction for the perfect person, seemingly, all of it worked over sliding guitar licks and bubbling bass grooves. There’s this little tonal shift that occurs after each verse, hitting right after the words momentarily cease; it’s dug itself right into my ear canals and I’m hoping its made itself a home. Claus Frohlich created the video using some of Jad Fair’s drawings, continuing the uniqueness of the project. Pure Candy will be out on March 7th via Shrimper and Stationary Heart!

Lone Striker Drops Blip One

We here at ATH are huge believers in Tom Brown; he’s been a joy to cover as part of Teenage Tom Petties and Rural France, but his Lone Striker works is gifting us a glimmer of a different side of Tom. On his latest single, the track and its accompany video all encompass a walkabout; the soft snare touches provide a marching beat, albeit one that work’s at a glacial pace. But, like all things Brown, there are some finite little charms he sprinkles into his work; I’m in love with the sort of ghostly vocal sample that haunts this number. That overlapping vocal approach throughout doesn’t hurt one bit either, setting up the strings to hit you right in the heart. His self-titled album will be out on March 14th via Safe Suburban Home.

Y Is Nature Release Video for The Fool

Woke up in search of finding something that was airy and drifting, which is where I hit this Y Is Nature track. The Norwegian project is focused on crafting spy pop, dealing with themes of suspicion and secrecy, which is clearly apparent in the vocal work on this new track. I loved the subtleties of this number, moving from a predominantly vocal performance to a late night chill pop piece, lightly bouncing upon the beat and groove. The careful craft leaves plenty of space for Tuva Svensden Hesmyr’s voice, and she owns the core of this song; she also is the character in its film. Look for Evasion, the new album, to drop this March!
