e4444e Offer Liberation

Wherever you find yourself today, you’ll want the hope that “Liberation” brings you. e4444e builds this atop a sampled beat and a continuous strum, creating this continuous March forward. From there, the ability to move in and out of lofty vocal notes has the song sort of cresting on wings, soaring through your speakers with this brightness that will fill your room (and heart) with a bit of warmth. This song offers you a moment to reflect, then break the chains of whatever seems to be in your way, carrying you off into a better space. This track appears on Authentic Natural Tradition, which hits on May 31st via Dinosaur City.

Above Me Prep Debut EP

My first introduction to Rick Altieri was through his work as a member of Blue Ocean, but he’s now focused primarily on his work as Above Me. While there’s still some dabbling in the noise and explorative guitar sounds, this new single indicates a more electronic approach…whether that’s necessity or choice we may never know. Listening to the craft, there’s a lot of sonic similarities to last year’s Dummy LP, bridging the gap between the mechanical and melodic; I love the way this tune begins to open up with the vocals operating almost as an extra texture, then kind moving out into the ether. The 8 track debut EP will be out this Friday via Dandy Boy Records, but you can stream it early by clicking HERE.

Buffet Lunch Prepare Perfect Hit LP

Amidst the shittiness of the world, we’re greeted with a bit of solace today, with Scottish outfit Buffet Lunch announcing their newest LP, Perfect Hit. They too, are in a mellowed mood, as you’ll notice by color symbolism in the track’s title, though that creates this sort of playful indifference, displaying a group locked into one another whilst vibing out. It takes nearly 2 minutes for the group to work their way out of a jam session, turning the track into this sort of whistling bit of brilliant art pop, all hanging to the cliffs of bounciness. In a way, it sort of feels like a modern take on Park Life, and I’m totally thirsty to hear the whole of the LP; it drops on April 4th via Upset the Rhythm.

Johnny Maraca and the Marockers Announce Little Heart

While I often find myself swept away with fads, I love going back to good old fashioned rock n’ roll to get my day started, which is why I’m grateful this Johnny Maraca & The Marockers tune dropped today. The group’s not necessarily pushing new boundaries, instead they choose to revel in classic nostalgia; they’re sound takes a punk ethos and applies it to the OG rock style. Johnny, for his part, carries that bravado and bite that fascinates teens and makes old fogies like me boogie in their seats. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a big allegiance to Johnny Thunders either. Look for the group to release Little Heart via K Records on April 25th.

Hooky Team Up with Winter for Water Season

Philly’s Hooky made a lot of noise last year with their Mirage LP, but for their new Water Season EP, they’ve teamed up with ATH fave, Winter, to make a collaborative recording. All of this opens with a wickedly warped guitar, bending and snaking through your speakers as they await the steady march of the drum bits. Samira [Winter] enters the picture, her voice finding the perfect setting as it’s velvety cool seems manufactured to cozy up alongside of her counterparts here. Hooky seeming raise the ante, building in textures that appear to offer more volume, but there’s no phasing Winter as she chills out and does her thing. Really excited to hear more from Water Season; it hits on February 14th via Julia’s War.

MIEN Announce Evil People

I love a good supergroup, especially when its made up acts we already love…and bonus points if it features Austin folks. So, here’s MIEN, which features members of Black Angels, Golden Dawn Arkestra, Elephant Stone and Earlies…all who’ve been regulars here, and now they’ve got a new album, Evil People. This new single is like a proto-psych; it’s filled with these pulsing notes and shattering guitar squalls, yet just as I thought the tune was pigeon-holed, they mix it up and move into different territory after the two minute mark, taking on a melodic moment to let the song breathe and open up. Looking forward to seeing where this album goes; MIIEN comes out on April 18th via Fuzz Club.

Brand New Cross Record

We’ve heard whispers of a new Cross Record album coming our way, as Emily shared some images that apparently are stills from the current video. This new single comes with the news of Crush Me, the newest album from the former Austinite’s project. There seem to be a lot of ups and downs in the finishing of the record, with major label interest coming then fading; accompaniment showed up, then disappeared, all of it leading to a sentiment of loss and confusion that surely bleeds through the notes on this album…though that clearly shouldn’t be a representation of the musical quality that we hear here; it’s the same striking work that has always kept the artist revered on our pages. Crush Me will be out on March 21st via Ba Da Bing Records.

Rattle Share Ritual Video

Nottingham’s drumming duo, Rattle, have a new record coming out on February 28th, and their latest single, which is the album’s opener, is as hypnotic as it’s title would indicate. They quickly settle into their musical groove, offering up eerie vocal notes that echo and then disappear into the air, perhaps a nod to the track’s influence, the Boleskin House in Scotland. Things operate in a similar territory through the first minute, until a verse enters with the refrain “a part of who you are” rings out. They begin to add more texture, working in cymbals as well as the vocals to the tune, fleshing things out beyond five minutes. You can grab their Encircle LP via Upset the Rhythm on February 28th.

New Video from FACS

In a world where immediacy seemingly comes off as the most impactful, I’ve been relishing acts like FACS of late, as they tend to offer glimpses of hooks and melody, while turning their backs on the instant gratification. Their latest single operates with these sliding guitar notes warping around snare and cymbal snaps; they soon embrace a bit of melody before opening up the spoken notes of the vocals. As the progress is made, the vocals do get a stab and blast of emphasis, then it all recedes to let the song embrace its warped guitar mingling, then break down into a stretch of creative noise, echoing with tension rather than building walls of sound. It’s a bit more of a pensive approach, and I’m definitely grateful for the core thought process in the craft; look for Wish Defense on February 7th via Trouble in Mind Records.

Circling Back on SKLOSS

Amidst the hubbub of last week, I neglected to highlight this new single from Austin’s SKLOSS. The brooding nature and slow build are one of the core elements of their new LP that makes their debut LP so gratifying; if you’re wont for immediacy and easy hooks, skip on my friends. Karen’s vocals provide this ghostly echo, all the while she’s pummeling the kit. Sandy’s on fire for his part, letting those riffs flow with this natural doom sentiment that crashes in waves against the speakers. I mean, watch the video and you’ll see how emphatic noise can wake the elderly! Their debut, The Pattern Speaks, hits on March 7th via Fuzz Club.
