Circling Back on SKLOSS

Amidst the hubbub of last week, I neglected to highlight this new single from Austin’s SKLOSS. The brooding nature and slow build are one of the core elements of their new LP that makes their debut LP so gratifying; if you’re wont for immediacy and easy hooks, skip on my friends. Karen’s vocals provide this ghostly echo, all the while she’s pummeling the kit. Sandy’s on fire for his part, letting those riffs flow with this natural doom sentiment that crashes in waves against the speakers. I mean, watch the video and you’ll see how emphatic noise can wake the elderly! Their debut, The Pattern Speaks, hits on March 7th via Fuzz Club.

Cats of Transnistria Prep IV

We’re all over the Finland scene today, with a brand new single from Cats of Transnistria…one of my favorite acts on the Soliti roster. That said, they’ve mostly been quiet for the last few years since 2019’s Aligning…save for a single that seemed like a one-off for the moment. Well, today you get to visit their ethereal realm as they make the announcement that they’ll be releasing IV this Spring. When listening here, just imagine your favorite shoegaze bands focusing entirely on their shoes, dreamily being swayed back and forth by the vocals. Background moments are punctuated by thundered drum hits and walls of dense sonics, though it all hangs in the balance, waiting to see if it will crash upon you. You’ll have to listen to find out, and look out for IV this March.

Roller Derby Offer Last Night Video

We’ve always been avid fans of Roller Derby, though when they changed the line-up, we wondered what would come of their debut album…particularly after being one of our favorite acts when they arrived at SXSW. But, after a bit of quiet, they’ve been in full force since last year, and now are set to release When the Night Comes, their debut LP. This new single has all the magic of their early work, though the maturity in the craft reveals the depth of their craft; if you listen to the plot twist at 2:20, you’ll hear a band moving beyond the confines of their sound. When the Night Comes is set to be released on February 28th.

Dusty Lucite Release Video for The Reddest Flag

You’re bound to missing something out here in the music realms, which is why I’m bummed I spaced out on the steady swagger of Portland’s Dusty Lucite. Musically, the song’s pretty light, working with a simple guitar that kind of hangs back like a little cold winter air blowing across the frozen grounds. But, it’s the vocals that catch me; they’re restrained to a degree, but you can feel their boldness, akin to Quinnisa from Big Blood. There’s such power, and even if you think she’s being held back, your still smacked with those huge musical pipes. Check out the recent Normal Harder LP if you’re into it!

Lake Announce Bucolic Gone LP

Having mostly been quiet since 2020, Lake aim to make a big splash with their return in 2025! Today they bring us a new single and the announcement of Bucolic Gone, a new long-player for Don Giovanni Records. Everything they accomplish in this 4 minute tune revolves around the perfect balance of space and the vocals. I love how the group seems to employ layer upon layer of texture, though in that, it also feels wide-open, like they could continue to fill their musical bucket with more sounds…and they do, splashing fuzz and riffs throughout in the distance. Still, it only succeeds because of the gentle nature of the voice, like a drifting feather that just hangs on the edges of the sun, reflected in both the song’s title and the visuals below. We’re sure to hear more from the group before the album drops this Spring.

Horsegirl’s Switch Over Video

If there’s going to be a consensus album of the year contender this early on in 2025, it’s gotta be the forthcoming LP from Horsegirl, right? I mean, every single has been consistently brilliant, and this new one just settles in right alongside that, kind of building up this sort of post-Electrelane brilliance; if you listen to the harmonizing amongst the trio, you’ll be transported back to the genius of No Shouts No Calls. Still, this sounds fresh, and even my nostalgic looking-glasses can’t shade the fact that this might be one of the best acts around. It takes absolute magic to build songs this infectious and simultaneously challenging, and I can’t stop playing this one. Phonetics On and On will be out February 14th via Matador.

Florist Announce Jellywish

If ever there was a concept that fit my state of mind, the ideas behind the new Florist record seem to fall perfectly in step with where my brain is resting. Emily Sprague says the record was intentionally set to be “chaotic, confusing and multifaceted,” rocking us from our doldrums. Seems like this year is already set to shake things up in our world, so perhaps we dive into it. This new single/video is a little babbling brook, ornately wrapping itself around a tumbling drum beat; Sprague’s voice canoes down the musical stream, a voyager seemingly moving in whichever direction the song blows it. A nice way to announce Jellywish, their new LP planned for a April 4th release via Double Double Whammy.

Dean Wareham Announces That’s the Price of Loving Me

Just as I was sliding through my emails, I remembered that today is a day to celebrate, as Dean Wareham announces That’s the Price of Loving Me, his newest solo outing. This album’s production was handled by Kramer, which is the first time the two have worked together in over 30 years, at least in the recording capacity. Still, Dean’s approach is a far cry from the early days of Galaxie 500, taking on more of a psychedelic pop note this go round; the vocals almost feel like blossoming flowers, blooming behind the steady rock of the drums, all of it layered with depth by Gabe Noel’s weeping cello work. Carpark will release That’s the Price of Loving Me on March 28th.

Alpaca Sports Share Fresh Single

It’s been a really busy week in the indie landscape, but I couldn’t get through this week without giving a shout out to a the latest single from Alpaca Sports. This song opens with this huge bouncing push, hanging on the edges of a jangling riff and pumping energy right through your speakers. Then, they pull back just a bit, letting Amanda take over on vocal duties this go round, offering up a velvety serenade that reveals another layer of the group’s craft. I love that the group don’t shy away from their influences, mentioning acts like Saint Etienne and Pet Shop Boys in the press for this latest tune. They’ll release Another Day on January 17th via Elefant Records.

Taxidermists Announce 20247

The snapping hook that rolled right in with the swagger on this new Taxidermists single immediately had me hooked, so we had to make sure we repped the group’s new 20247 LP. That immediate infectiousness rolls through the initial stages, but then settles into more of a bounding roll, like the tire that appears in the video accompaniment we’ve got for you below. There’s enough grittiness to keep the tune feeling left of center, but the hooks are so bouncy I can’t stop just shaking in my seat as I write a few words here. The brevity of the tune keeps things sharp, so you won’t have time to tire of the immediate joy it’ll bring you if you crank it up loud. 20247 will be out on March 7th via Danger Collective.
