The Laughing Chimes Deliver Cats Go Car Watching

With an earlier Sharp Pins tune, it’s now the Laughing Chimes turn to show us that the indie scene is in great hands with these young acts. We’ve watched the boys in this Ohio outfit grow over the last few years, under the tutelage of the great Slumberland roster, but this new song drops in this maturity that is simply insane. Personally, I’m in awe of the vocal inflections and their nod to some of the early post-punk vibes, though I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that the charm of those guitar jangles stretching out across the track didn’t give me a little warmth on this cold Texas morning. Plus, there’s tons of cat footage in this video (I think I see Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch). The new LP, Whispers in the Speech Machine is out on January 31st.

Sharp Pins Reissue Radio DDR + Share New Single

Originally released as part of the Hallogallo tape series, Sharp Pins have elected to reissue Radio DDR via the heralded K Records/Perennial. But, the real kicker is that Kai Slater has not only doubled-down on his craft, he’s added a few new tracks to the release, one of which you can’t catch below. There’s a familiarity to his discordant pop, especially if you’ve found yourself fond of obscure lo-fi pop, though there’s some little nuances that add their own layer of charm. Just listen to the bass bob right before the 2 minute mark hits, turning the song into an entirely different piece that opens up a pandora’s box of melody before reverting back; it’s a brief flourish, albeit one that has Slater as one of the great indie hopes of tomorrow. Radio DDR will be out on March 21st via the aforementioned heroes.

zzzahara Shares In Your Head Video

Why not start off the day with a well executed bit of pop rock, like this jam from zzzahara. The new single has all the trademarks of current indie, dropping in a mixture of dreamy layers with bursts of feedback echoes, all of it setting up the huge hook that greets you when the chorus drops. In a sense, it reminds me of a cleaner Cherry Glazer, filled with this insatiable fire that breeds pop sensibilities, though here, they’re tightly contained by zzzahara’s smoothed out vocal delivery; this keeps the track’s tightness, so the tune never moves too far away from that little earworm. This tune appears on Spiral Your Way Out, which drops this Friday via Lex Records; it’s followed by a big old tour throughout the Spring across North America!

A Place to Bury Strangers Share New Video

One of the great listens of last year was Synthesizer; it showed A Place to Bury Strangers sill spending time in the noisier realms of darkness, though in a sense they were billowing into an almost pop realm. They’ve just released the video for “Have You Ever Been in Love,” which is one of the standout tracks of the record, and the visual version brings back their origins in the wash of effects being utilized. Something in this song always feels wholly live too, like you can revel in the noise whilst still tapping your toes, and I’m all for it. Their LP is available now through Dedstrange.

Frankie Sunswept and the Silver Moons Share New Video

If you’re yearning for the psychedelic pop that Of Montreal popularized within the indie scene, might we suggest you listen to this new track from Frankie Sunswept & the Silver Moons. The group utilizes a fantastic bass groove that bobs in and out of the speakers, surrounding it with layers upon layers of vocals, building up this huge swell of melody that seamlessly melts into the band’s wash of texture. There’s a little bit more warmth to it too, so the pop current really operates beneath the craft, which provides a bit more listening longevity, as you’re not pummeled with hooks, but rather soak in the baths of their pop tendencies. You’ll find this jam on the group’s new Nostalgia LP, out next February.

Check Out Coldwave’s Italia 06

We’re already looking forward to the SXSW lineup, particularly as they’ve listened, relatively, to some of the noise surrounding their sponsorships (though the artist pay bump could still be higher). But, one of the main things I love, and I know a shit ton of folks who over look this benefit, is that it allows bands to apply for grants from their governments to come perform in our country…and Coldwave is one of the group’s just announced for a trip to our shores. The Australian band reminds me a lot of Shame, though they’ve got a larger group building in the texture, as you’ll see from this live video they recorded for “Italia ’06.”

Climax Landers Share Valkyrie Profile Video

Sure, you’ve already got your finger on the cool kid pulse for the end of the year, and that’s fair, but the great thing about this “List Season” is you get a chance to go back and revisit some stuff, like the last LP from Climax Landers. It’s a bit all over the indie rock road map, in the best sort of way, blending slower elements with bursts of fuzzy guitars and hooks, like “Valkyrie Profile,” which spends the better part of the first minute in a down-trodden one note land. Boom, the song jangles to life, drums snap and there’s a rebirth of sorts, taking the folk elements and rocking them in a disorderly fashion! Zenith No Effects is out now via Gentle Reminder.

Horsegirl Share Julie Single

Not sure I had Horsegirl penciled in on my calendar as delivering the knockout record of 2025, but here it is, and I’m definitely going to stand by this being one of the strongest LPs we’ll hear next year. “Julie” is another settled portrayal of a band locked into crafting their sound, building their songs with an absolute purpose; I keep thinking they’re going to explode at any given turn, yet their restraint just illustrates how carefully they’ve evolved on this LP. Don’t get me wrong, there’s not an absence of art of energy, but rather this beautiful experience that, like me, you’ll want to share with your nearest and dearest music nerds. Phonetics On and On is out on February 14th via Matador.

Fantastic Purple Spots Drop Video + Share New EP

Over on our label side of the site, we began the year with the excellent Vibrations Now EP from Austin’s Fantastic Purple Spots. Thus, it seemed only fitting that we wrap up the year by tossing out the final musical statement from the project: Spotsylvania Lullabies. Prior to the holiday break, we shared a nostalgic leaning classic rocker, “Flowerland,” and today we’ve got a video version of the tune to run for you below. It’s the perfect encapsulation of their sound, melding their work from both EPs into a psychedelic world of blended colors and imagery. In terms of the new EP, officially out Friday but streaming below, it reminds me a lot of the early Clientele records, living somewhere between experimental psychedelia and pastoral rock n’ roll…perfect for your Winter listening, so stream it below!

Strange Lot Release It’s Always You

Over the last handful of years, Strange Lot has been making a solid name for themselves in the Austin music scene, and it appears as they’re nearing their own pinnacle as this fresh single illustrates the group’s quality, while also throwing down what makes them more of an outlier in an oversaturated psych realm. The genre as it stands has the propensity to lock in a groove, let that pulse and move, but always hold the song steady; we don’t see the band striving to escape that. However, most acts employ a more traditional guitar sound while the Strange Lot seem content to lurk in the shadows of their work; it elevates their craft into a more cinematic realm that feel more traditional in its willingness to step away from the masses. This tune will feature on the group’s forthcoming LP, with Alex Mass and Jim Eno taking on production/mixing roles…so you know it’s a big deal.
