The Wickies Announce Self Titled Debut

Make no mistake about it, but Quinn Kinsella-Mulkerin has one of the greatest voices around; she blew me away with her performance in family band Big Blood. But, now she’s found a friend and is channeling her energy into The Wickies. The duo just announced their debut LP for Ba Da Bing, and it’s as intoxicating as anything I’ve heard all week, so please don’t skip over it. In a sense this is classic rock n’ roll; there’s not a lot of excess flare and extemporaneous flourishes, rather than focus on the natural rhythm and feel, which is aided by a steady percussive stomp and a restrained Quinn. Pure rock and roll at its greatest here, so be sure to pencil in a space to grab The Wickies when it drops on October 4th.

Cactus Lee Shares Sister Video

Cactus Lee may not be a household name yet, but after a fairly prolific couple of years, it looks like everyone’s starting to take notice. He’s got a slew of dates on the horizon from AmericanaFest, Flying Island Festival and Tomorrow Never Knows, all big indicators of the draw of his magical brand of country. And, since its been a minute, perhaps this brand new single is a hint that there might be more coming our very way just around the corner. I love how the track, and its Super 8 film footage, certainly feels like a dusty Summer day in Texas, yet you can hear the soulfulness in the voice, something that beckons you sing together with a bunch of your best buds. Please keep your eyes on the prize, that is, Cactus Lee.

Healees Share White Room + Announce Coin de l’oeil

When a bunch of powerhouse labels get together to co-release something, you can pretty much count on us being into it. Hidden Bay Records, Safe Suburban Home and Indie or Die jointly announced Coin de l’oeil, the newest album from Parisian outfit Healees. Our first single has the track blanketing the listener in warmth, with crisp guitar notes churning over one another as they continuously leave space for soaring vocals to work in the negative space. Those vocals carry an earnestness that takes a dream pop ethos and moves it into something a bit more powerful, which definitely has my ears perked up and ready to go when the record drops in October.

The Submissives Deliver New Single

As we go through the Monday listening routine, we get to visit a bunch of jams we just missed out on, like the first single from the new LP from The Submissives. At times, you feel like you’re listening to a classic doo-wop pop piece, but there’s something about the guitar lines that feels inherently ominous. It’s almost as if they’re using that tension to set up the big hook from the chorus, offering cooled vocal work that can pull anyone into their style on first listen. They fray the edges with little bits of horns and strings, layering the tension that certainly matches the fit for this video. Live at the Sound Studios will be out this Fall via Celluloid Lunch.

Best Bets Drop Heaven Video

The Hollow Husk of Feeling can’t get here soon enough, but with the new Best Bets records still a few weeks away, they’ve offered up one more sneak peek into one of my most anticipated LPs of the Fall. The energy of this tune totally fits where I’m at this afternoon, kicking out some high-octane power-pop while the vocals are being stretched to the max. Again, not sure of the album as a whole, but it feels like they’re touching the highest peaks of the genre, flirting with edges of punk while adhering to a sensible melodic approach you can’t ignore. Make sure you grab a copy from Meritorio Records before the release date on September 27th.

Spiral XP Share Sinner Single

Spiral XP has been on our radar since dropping their It’s Been a While EP, though we might suggest checking in on their split with TV Star too. Alas, all that to say we’re really excited for the forthcoming full-length, I Wish I Was a Rat, with another single dropping to get you on board today. This is a steady crunch rocker, something you’d expect from folks living up in the Pacific Northwest, though they’re certainly taking care to instill some of the noisier elements in their sound. There are elements of this jam that feel like a march, like a step in line up the mountain, rejoicing in walls of screaming guitars when you reach the peak. I Wish I Was a Rat is out on October 18th via Danger Collective.

Capitol Share Interior Metropol Single

What a glorious day to open the inbox and see a fresh Capitol tune ready to be shared with the masses. I instantly loved the way this track drove right into the complex realm of noisy pop; you can hear curtains of guitar noise shimmering in the mix, waiting for the thunderous boom of that kick and snare to jump in and add to the textural stamp they’ve crafted. Interestingly, the vocals feel really far back on this number, like they’re hanging behind that curtain, peeking out just to see if we’re paying attention. As the tune progresses, they dive more into the ominous nature, almost allowing the band and the listener to completely lose themselves within the confines of the track itself. They release their new record, Sounds Like a Place on Meritorio this coming November.

The Smashing Times Share New Single

Not sure what you have planned for this Friday, but seeing as its a Bandcamp Friday, might we encourage you to take a peek at what the Smashing Times have in store for you. Whereas their earliest efforts dwelled in the crosshairs of paisley and jangle, they’ve done an about-face here, working with more of a kind of oddball-punk feel, albeit spun through the lens of great pop sensibility. Think of the Blockheads or TVPs as nostalgia’s contemporaries; they work this new single almost as if its a multi-act play, circling back to this mystical seance that teases the listener before swinging back with a bit of a punky bob and weave. Mrs Ladyships and the Cleanerhouse Boys will be out via K/Perennial on November 1st.

The Green Child Announce Look Familiar LP

If you’ve covered the Australian music scene for the past few decades in any fashion, you’ve likely heard the name Mikey Young; he’s been behind the scenes and in the scene with various acts like Eddy Current, but today, we’re focusing on his work with Raven Mahon (of Grass Widow), as The Green Child. On the new album, Look Familiar, the band began with ideas of both Mikey and Raven, then fleshed them out with new members Alex McFarlane and Shaun Gionis, allowing their psychedelic influences to mix and swirl like some color-based science experiment. In the first minute and a half, you get the casual pulsing pop akin to Broadcast, but as a collector of musical pebbles, I implore you to definitely drop in just before the 2 minute mark. It’s a quick textural shift, livening the track, then building layer upon layer, even adding to the vocals; this lets the song take on more life and spring right through your speakers! Look Familiar is out on November 1st via Upset the Rhythm and Hobbies Galore.

Forceghost Ready Recycled Hearts EP + Share New Video

If you’re an avid fan of textural pop, then perhaps you might spend some time with us, listening to the great new single from Georgia’s Forceghost. They’ve got one EP in the books this year, with Recycled Hearts on its way to your ears this November. One listen through is simply not enough to really indulge in the layered constructs the group are pushing. Synthesized beats and glitches work to build this fuzzy background, punctuated by a sharp drum hit, all the while space age notes spin and bounce throughout. Still, you’ve got a fuzzy bit of guitar crafting the slightest edge that keeps the track from bounding off into absurdity…and all of it’s tethered by these velvety vocal notes built into the musical complex they’ve built around themselves. Risky and rewarding makes for some of the best underground pop. Recycled Hearts is out November 1st via Gift Fig Records.
