Liars Announce Vinyl Reissue Series + Share New Video

This news has been floating around for a few days, but I really just wanted an excuse to post about my favorite Liars record. The band have announced they’ll be giving their back catalog the reissue treatment, though they’ll be doing it with recycled vinyl, which sounds like the right move considering all those toss away Adele record sitting at Target. While I know the band is predominantly Angus’ project nowadays, They Threw Us All in the Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top is a pretty spotless debut illustrating how incredible the group were. The reissue of this LP is out on July 22.

Kiwi Jr Drop Night Vision Single

Kiwi Jr have a slew of really great records under their belt, so it’s no surprise they’ve got the support of Sub Pop. I spent a lot of time with both Football Money and Cooler Returns, so I’ve got high expectations for the forthcoming Chopper LP. This new tune sees the band kind of branching into this warm pop territory; it reminds me a lot of the last Strokes record (which I don’t mind); I think the fading vocal in the chorus hits just the right notes. It’ll be interesting to hear the whole of the record, as it seems like the band have less of a Pavement nod and a bit more polish this go round…still, a good jam is a good jam, and this is certainly one of those. Chopper is out August 12th.

Living Hour Announce New LP + Release Single w/ Jay Som

I have a feeling that if you’re writing about best tunes for the week, this new Living Hour track definitely has to be up there (if not, one of my favorite tunes of the month). I got hooked on the crashing guitar opening, but love the contrast as the tune quickly slides into a more mellow space, leaving lots of room for notes to ring sharply in your ears, allowing all those notes and vocals to kind of hang in the air. All that said, the song eventually slides back into the heavier notes, but I love how the mix keeps it heavy, though quiet; the vocals still have their dreaminess, even when coated with the distortion. A perfect balance between fragility and noise awaits you. The group will release their new LP, Someday is Today via Kanine in September.

Vintage Crop Share The Bloody War

In a little over a month, we’re going to have a new Vintage Crop LP to enjoy, and for my meaningless two cents, it’s shaping up quite nicely. There’s a new track out from the LP, and despite it’s punky garage tendencies, the band are slowing things down to mix up the vibe; imagine Amyl and the Sniffers coming down off that sugar high…this song is the crash in musical form. Building in gang vocals on the song’s back half adds some texture to the tune, giving it this bubbly effervescence. Kibitzer is out on June 24th via Upset the Rhythm and Anti Fade.

Cola Drop Fulton Park Video

I’ve really enjoyed spending some time with the new Cola album, which will be out at the end of this Week. Today, the band dropped the video for “Fulton Park,” which is one of the tunes I kept going back to as I listened to the LP. There’s this clever little plodding bounce to it; it’s kind of like a happy circle pit, but it’s broken up by this sort of sputtering noise with Tim Darcy’s voice draped over the downward spiral. Something about this tune just felt more imaginative, more thoughtful in its purposeful unfolding than I think we got before, illustrating that Cola definitely have some tricks up their sleeve. Sun Spots Share Loosey Video

Feels like a weird week around here. There were tons of jams coming left and right, then radio silence. Maybe I made the world mad mocking Stereogum? Well, luckily this punky piece of pop came through from Sun Spots and it absolutely rips. Thinking about modern trends, the Seattle outfit seems to rely more on the rock ethos than the pop bit, though the chorus certainly doesn’t shy away from an absolute stellar hook to get you turned on out there. Loud, boisterous…and fun? You can count me in. The group release their Loosey EP this Fall via Happy Families.

Plastic Mirror Share Tenterhooks Video

When you’re dropping Beach House and Cocteau Twins references, you’re generally going to get a listen from me. Such was the case when I came across this new track from Plastic Mirror, and I’m glad I took the time here, as the tune will surely reward those with similar tastes. For this track, I’m feeling more of the Beach House vibe, with the duo letting the song takes its own approach to the opens space the guitars and drums create. In the chorus, you get a nice hook, though it doesn’t feel too obvious, playing off the dreaminess just a bit more. It’s early, and the perfect place to indulge your dreams, so turn this tune on and enjoy.

R.E. Seraphin Announces New EP

Long ago, RE Seraphin was a powerhouse Austin musician, but feeling the call, he moved out to the San Francisco area, where he’s been fortunate to polish up his stomping power pop sounds. We’re stoked to point you in the direction of the new Swingshift EP, which is dropping late this month via Dandy Boy/Mt. St. Mtn/Safe Suburban Homes. This is an interesting effort, featuring the constant drum stomp that serves as the song’s foundation. From there, the tune hangs on an almost garage vibe, though you can’t help but feel the Bay Area pop goodness shining through there, particularly as the song moves into the chorus, which wouldn’t seem too far out of line on a Papercuts LP. Stoked for R.E and company; the EP drops on May 27th.

Wombo Announce Fairy Rust LP

Wombo were one of the top 5 bands on my list to catch during SXSW, and their songs live were pretty spectacular, so I’m stoked to finally hear the news of their new Fairy Rust LP. It’s not a far cry from what’s going on in the indie sphere, bringing a bit of that sort of indifferent vocal drawl into angular post-rock grooves. I think listening to the rhythm section, it’s clear that the band build up this natural anxiousness; they always feel on the cusp of breaking out into something chaotic, though as we see here, Sydney Chadwick tethers them to more atmospheric realms. Excited to hear what all Fairy Rust has to offer; it’s out July 29th via Fire Talk.

Say Sue Me Share No Real Place Single

South Korea’s Say Sue Me has written a lot of great tracks over the years, but for my ears, this might be one of the tops, if not THE top. I love the energetic roll in that begins immediately, with Sumi’s voice hitting you right away, speedily delivering the relatable lyrical content about missing someone. There’s this natural hook that’s superseding everything else around the song, but that doesn’t mean that the thumping drums or the dancing guitar work go unnoticed; it’s just hard to focus as you’re so seduced by the incessant joy jumping through your speakers. The band release The Last Thing Left this Friday via Damnably!
