Chime School Announce the Boy Who Ran the Paisley Hotel

If you’re like me, constantly fawning over those jingle-jangle guitar sounds, you already know the Chime School; they’ve been one of the preeminent bands of the last several years, with a great LP and 7″ already under their belt. Today, we bring you the news that they’ll be releasing The Boy Who Ran the Paisley Hotel this August (8.23) via Slumberland Records. Our first listen begins with a slight stutter, giving you a 10 second tease before the song immediately bounds off into spring joyousness. For me, I think Andy Pastalaniec’s vocals are the winner on this single, using these slight little shifts that unfold the melody before the listener’s ears; listen to the chorus of “give your heart away/slowly to everyone,” offering this subtle twist just before punching out with a more punctuated delivery. A master craftsman of the jangle sound, Andy and Chime School are ready to deliver a knockout LP when Summer draws to a close.

Dutch Interior Sign with Fat Possum

Dutch Interior is a new-to-me act, and I’m definitely interested to hear where there music will go now that they’ve signed with Fat Possum and dropped a new single to a larger audience. Initially, the atmospheric build of the song was what took me; it’s got the perfect balance of escapism meets hurtling noise. When the vocals enter, they operate in this mundane manner, sort of settling the track or even just letting the listener breathe before the song unfurls into this bounding bit of post rock glory. You can crank it up, and honestly, you might not even need the lyrics, as the movement and power are that moving…so be on the lookout for. more from this LA act. Also…shout out to Joan Miro.

Obligatory Softies Post

It’s already all over the Internet, but the Softies are back! They’ve brought out their magical charms that have made them one of the most revered indiepop acts. Just watching this video, seeing the interplay between Jen and Rose brings back all the feelings you missed over the last 20 plus years…unless you grabbed that split Tony Molina cassette! We don’t even need to wax poetically here, as there’s not much more to say that hasn’t been said about the duo. That said, I’m super happy to hear new stuff, and look forward to grabbing a copy of The Bed I Made, out in August via Father/Daughter Records.

Crack Cloud Share the Medium

It’s early on Tuesday, and I definitely needed something to get me out of bed. The familiarity of Crack Cloud‘s latest single was definitely something that grabbed my interest, pulling the sheets off and reaching for my laptop. At first, it feels a bit like a young act mocking the Sex Pistols, but when you get in deeper you’ll hear a bit more polish, almost like they’ve repackaged the sound to bring bigger hooks. They reveal this further when they strip it all back in the middle, feeding a dreamy pop vocal performance right in the middle of the angst…and like the video’s balloon suggest…the song ends up being all pop, but in a refreshing manner. They release Red Mile on July 26th via Jagjaguwar.

Time Stalkers Release Isabelle Video

Not everyone works on the same album cycle, especially if you’re a 9 piece group like Time Stalkers. This last week, a video emerged for their slow-churning pop ballad “Isabelle;” you might recognize the tune from their 2020 self-titled LP, thus giving me another chance to celebrate the band’s work. The track’s sells a pretty heart-wrenching vibe, pulling at you as the guitars bend and the strings sink you…thus the video needs the same sentiment. So, we’re presented with the story of a bird who has just been dumped, thus turning to the Time Stalkers LP for consoling; it’s a charming presentation of heartbreak, if that exists. You can still find a copy of the band’s album on cassette over at Gentle Reminder Records.

Lunar Vacation Announce New LP + Share Set the Stage

The musical world can sometimes be serendipitous. Just last week, I was talking with a friend from Australia who was looking for bands to tour with in the fall; they were going through Georgia, so I suggested Lunar Vacation, then myself traveled down an LV wormhole. Wake up today, brand new Lunar Vacation video on the Internet, with an announcement of a fresh LP for our friends over at Keeled Scales. This beautifully choreographed video directed by Finn Wolfhard accompanies the band’s latest single, and man, this is the sort of set-up that builds anticipation of a new record…as if they really needed an extra dose. Everything Matters, Everything’s Fire will be out September 13th.

Font Share Brand New Single

I was asleep when this new Font track dropped yesterday, otherwise I would have been on top of it…but we’ve got to rep the ATX scene…particularly as the group are one of the most revered artists currently. While some singles have brought out their more jittery electronic bits, I love the reservation on this latest single. Sure, the electronic elements seep in through the cracks in the tune, but somehow they manage to kind of take some of the energy and hold onto it whilst still building that musical tension. For me, this just hints at what’s made the band so exciting, as you can hear their rock influences being warped by their incorporation of various electronic pieces; this song evolves patiently, never staying complacent, then erupts with these thundering beats. You’re in for a treat when the group drop Strange Burden on July 12th.

Enumclaw Sign with Run For Cover Records

There’s just something about the songs Aramis Johnson writes for Enumclaw that have the perfect balance between emotional indie rock and punchy rock. Their latest single, accompanying the announcement of a new album and their singing to RFC, encompasses that tightrope act, walking between these thoughtful moments that would fit on any modern playlist, all before bursting into these riff-oriented crashing waves; it forces you to find your footing emotionally, while also indicating the joyous nature that coincides with Johnson’s songwriting. Home in Another Life will drop on August 30th.

Ocelot Shares Brand New Single

We can always count on our friends Soliti to turn us on to great new stuff coming out of Finland , mostly because they’re the ones releasing the aforementioned “great new stuff.” Today, for instance, they bring about this dreamy new single from Helsinki’s Ocelot; they’ve been quiet since their 2022 debut, so hopefully this brings us promise of more tunes to come. I love the way it works with this incredible beat underneath; the guitar slides up and down, just as the drums snap, all of it working under this intoxicating groove. In the vocals, you get this sort of reserved calm, at times moving into a whisper that exposes just a hint of intimacy between artist and listener. Personally, there’s these great little nuanced moments too, little noise trinkets that sneak in from time to time, popping up to drag you beneath the song’s surface. Enjoy.

Fake Fruit Release Cause of Death Video

Another day, another great track coming out of the Oakland area, this time from Fake Fruit. The band are totally fucking with you here too, playing with your favorite post-punk tropes to suck you right into their world. At first you get those angular guitars (think Omni) branded with a pseudo-spoken word vocal display. Just as you think they’re ready to jettison off into stereotypical fun, they break it down real slowly and noise, hitting you with a wash of heavily distorted guitars and squawking horns, but pulled back so it rolls in like a dense fog. If you get sucked in, as you should, then wait for the burst of pop vocals from Hannah right at the 2:20 mark. What a great second single; they release Mucho Mistrust on August 23rd via Carpark Records.
