Careen Share Last Winter Video

Even after running this site for nearly 15 years now, there’s still just so much music to discover that you’ve got rely upon friends to keep you in the loop now and then. For me, that’s how I heard about Careen, when a friend sent an email encouraging us to listen to this new EP; the email name-checked Unwound, among others, so having just recently seen them, I was like yeah, lets do this! My two cents to offer is that the tune works in two phases; a traditional underground fare then a bit of sonic exploration. I gravitated towards the immediacy of the first phase, as the vocalist in the verses sounds like classic Thurston, up until the emphatic vocal bursts tear through speakers. That back side toys with the same sonic territory, but it’s employing space and limited vocal bits to let the tune completely evolve into its own realm. Cool jams, so look for Cycle 3 on February 23rd via Death Metal Florida.

Zowy Share Harbored Video

You’ve probably read about the work of Zowy in other forms on these old interweb pages, as its the project of Zoe Wyner from Halfsour and Temporary Eyesore. They’re new project has more kinship with acts like Broadcast or Jackie Mendoza, crafting these pulsating bits of bedroom pop that have a dominant vocal role that encircles the listener’s brain. For me, the undercurrent of this tune, contrasting against the bleeps and blips and bloops is what makes the song successful, as it leaves you with this impending doom crashing down against this robotic melodic future. If you’re into it, the Beware Magical Thinking cassette comes out this Friday courtesy of Lost Sound Tapes!

Ty Segall Shares My Best Friend

I’ll be the first to admit, that I’ve grown bored of Ty Segall over the last five years; he’s been a constant in the music scene, and at a certain point, I always wonder…what else is there? That’s not to say he’s not had great live shows; he’s like Thee Oh Sees in that manner…folks can never seem to get enough. That said, this new single from the forthcoming Three Bells does hold some intrigue and may entice me to get into the new LP. It’s got this sort of off-kilter, walking-the-guitar sort of craft to it; it feels like something out of the British art-pop scene a la Cate Le Bon. I love how he still breaks down into a jam, but even this feels muted and intimate, all the while the drums roll along in thunderous fashion. Ok Ty…I’m back in. Three Bells drops on January 26th via Drag City.

Itasca Returns with Imitation of War

The last time I remember hearing anything from Kayla Cohen’s Itasca project was pre-pandemic, so it’s been a few years since we’ve gotten anything fresh. That all changes today with the announcement of Imitation of War, along with the title track from the LP. Cohen’s voice is a marvel, somewhere between a modern day chanteuse and a classic sixties folk troubadour (Baez keeps popping up in my brain!). Still, the song wouldn’t have as much impact without the delicate guitar sounds that twist and turn through your speakers; there’s almost an ethereal nature to it, allowing the song to drift in your subconscious. The video incorporates that hint of mystery, while also including all the players on the latest LP. Imitation of War is out February 9th via Paradise of Bachelors.

Lamplight Announce Self-Titled LP

While it may be sunny here in Austin today, there’s bound to be some colder climes, patiently waiting for the music of Lamplight to brilliantly warm their souls. Every musical step here carries this weighted intent, with the edges of the tune billowing with emotional arrangements; I loved the piano plodding, but the twang of the slide guitar and gentle horns just lift this track to the heavens. In a way, it feels like something Pedro the Lion adjacent, albeit with huge feels that are pretty near inescapable. There’s this nostalgia to it, even in the lyrics, all of it allowing the song to just sit with you, stay awhile with your heart. Western Vinyl was surely on to something when they agreed to release the band’s self-titled LP next March!

Grandaddy’s Cabin in My Mind

When reading all the press around Grandaddy‘s return, there was likely skepticism around the influence of bluegrass leaking into the record. But, with this second single, one can definitely hear how Jason Lytle is capable of stretching influences into something quite moving. He’s always had this lightness to his vocal delivery, and it shines through here, allowing the song’s mellower feel to really blossom into this sparkling pop opus. It’s a solid reminder that sometimes the simplest formulas allow the space to make art expansive and personal. Looking forward to hearing all of Blu Wav; it drops February 16th via Dangerbird Records.

Pleased to Meet You: Alluvial Nuggets Premiere Codeine

Those of you in the know will surely recognize James Dutton’s name as a member of both Flywheel and the Cannanes, but as of 2020, he’s been working on his new project, Alluvial Nuggets. We’re told there’s an album on the horizon, with our first sample coming via this film shot by James himself on an iPhone 7, much to the chagrin of his family. Musically, there’s something so calming about the delivery of Dutton’s vocals; they faintly remind me of Jeff Tweedy, particularly when the striking string arrangements bend around each syllable. Within the confines, you’ll find some joyful moments that will clearly resonate; I particularly love the monosyllabic hums that begin around the 1:33 mark. And, while things seem fairly melancholic, there’s a pronounced stomp and excursion in the tune’s latter half, perhaps hinting that we have no idea what we can expect when this whole record drops next year. What we do know is we’ll be listening thanks to Lost and Lonesome; they’ll keep us posted on the LP next year!

Bolis Pupul Announces Letter to Yu

I’ve definitely been indulging my dance/electronic tendencies this year, looking for a nice little pick-me-up in this stressful year. With that, this Bolis Pupul tune has certainly found its way to my heart…and my listening rotation. The song, and the forthcoming Letter to Yu, are all written with Bolis’ deceased mother in mind…a love letter of sorts. This tune has a softened bounce to it, almost hiding there; when the chorus hits there’s a tiny adjustment that teases the track’s hook, but the subtlety keeps it buried deep in the tune. Watching it along with the accompanying video should certainly hold your interest, then having you, like me, looking towards the album’s release; Letter to Yu drops in March via DeeWee.

Non La Signs to Mint Records, Shares New Single

A few years have passed since Non La release Not In Love, which is one of my daughter’s favorite records to grab off the shelf (she’s really into pink!), so I was really pleased to hear that DJ On has signed his project on to work with Mint Records. Listening through this single, you can definitely hear the slight change in direction DJ, mostly as it feels a little more minimal upon the first minute or so. Still, the track certainly explodes, giving you that hook-laden punch that drives home all lyrical content from On. Visually, the video pays homage to the moments of “queer joy, love and tenderness,” hopefully shining a ray of light through the darkness of our times. There’s a new record in the works, but for now, you’ll have to just enjoy the hell out of this track.

Ducks Ltd. Announce New LP

Seems like only yesterday when we were writing about Ducks Unlimited, but the last few years they’ve been operating under Ducks Ltd, charming folks with their sharp guitar licks and indiepop tendencies. Today they offer a fresh track, letting us know there’s a brand new LP on the horizon in February. The duo have gathered friends from Ratboys and Dehd, among others, to flesh out their sound, warning us that we should expect a big sound on their second full-length LP. Harm’s Way will be out on February 9th via Carpark Records…and based on the first single, folks are already lining up at the shops to grab a copy.
