The Umbrellas Share Echoes Video

A few weeks back, when The Umbrellas dropped the spritely “Three Cheers,” I couldn’t be happier; it was the perfect taste of joyous indiepop to tease what was coming our way. Now, we’ve got the band turning a different note on “Echoes,” offering up a more solemn note, though tightening the band’s grip on pop sensibility. The hook on this one is all about the chorus where the guitars shuffle and the vocals try to play catch up, giving off this shimmering sparkle that overwhelms with emotion. And, just as you settle into the vibe, there’s a little guitar breakdown, opening into the male vocal role, serving as a little aside, but wholly fitting. It all leads to the exuberant bop that closes, with the vocals dancing on the notes and fulfilling all our wishes of joy. Fairweather Friend hits on January 26th via Slumberland/Tough Love.

Obligatory Jesus and Mary Chain New Album Post

Admittedly, there’s probably not much more to the story of JAMC that I can personally add, other than I’ve enjoyed the band the four times I’ve caught them after their most recent resurgence. They’ve got 40 years of rock n’ roll under their belts, and now, they’ve got a brand new album to go along with it! The opening minute or so of the record’s first single has a very British feel to it, somewhere in the cool waters between Blur and Spiritualized (or Spacemen 3 if we’re looking to avoid anachronisms). But, then the band makes it entirely their own, dropping in those trademark heavy guitar walls. As the tune builds, the song’s title gets repeated, giving off this rhythmic pattern that locks the vocals in step with the groove. Glasgow Eyes drops on March 8th via Fuzz Club!

Fun News from Swansea Sound: Holiday Card + New Video

Our pals at Swansea Sound continue to keep themselves busy, despite having just release their latest LP, Twentieth Century in September. They’ve banged out three Christmas themed new tunes, and are currently offering them together with a signed Christmas card accompany the three-song Santa Bail Me Out CD! You can stream the title track below.

But, in bonus news…Rob (from the band) reached out and let me know that a bunch of high school students in the Chicago area created their own video for “Click It and Pay.” Knowing that I’m a teacher and a Swansea Sound fan, Rob directed me towards the video; the students seem to be loving the song as much as we do; you can enjoy their creativity and hard work below! Congrats to the students at New Trier High School…and their teacher!

Real Estate Return with Water Underground

This news announcement is a shout out to my dear wife, who is an avowed Real Estate stan, and I’m sure she’ll love the airy nature of this tune here. Those crisp guitar sounds are exactly what made us all fall in love with the group initially, and their charm shines brightly on this track. According to the band, the lyrical content is all about the well of inspiration that artists draw from; it’s an apt analogy, as you can interpret the various stages of writing with water…sometimes its plentiful and other times drought hits hard and things dry up…like my writing here today! Oh, and fellow New Jersey natives and Nickelodeon fans might recognize cast members of Pete & Pete making an appearance in the video. They’ll release Daniel in February of next year via Domino Recording Co.

Body/Negative Share Sleepy Video

There’s perhaps nothing that rings more true this week than a track titled “Sleepy.” Whether you’re on vacation and just relaxing, or you’ve indulged too much and find yourself in a food-induced coma, Body/Negative have crafted this striking soundtrack to your day or week. It’s a seemingly simple track, maneuvering with very light keys and atmospheric fuzz as the vocals carry angelic memories associated with the songwriters (both Midwife and B/N have dedicated this tune to their deceased parents). Perhaps a solemn theme runs through it, but in this week, it allows us to turn our thoughts towards those we can be thankful for, be that parents or partners or pets. This track appears on the new LP, Everett, out December 8th via Track Number Records.

Kissing Party Share Graceless Video

When I first turned on this new track from Kissing Party, there was something instantly gratifying in the rhythm section; the snappiness of it all reminded me of early Drums tracks, endearing and energetic. As the song progresses, the vocals enter nonchalantly, offering listeners a sort of pop version of what Blank Dogs were doing back a few thousand years ago. The song carries this lightness and indifference, seemingly tied into the concept of the song, so it all fits absolutely perfectly. Honestly, if you missed the OG Pains of Being Pure at Heart, this is the tune for you to turn all the way up. They’ve got their Graceless album dropping today, so go listen to that as well!

That New PACKS Track

So, the sad thing about my life (not really) is that I generally have to write about yesterday’s news if no one gives me a solid heads-up; the perks of being a teacher and blogger! Speaking of that news from yesterday, PACKS, a band I’ve been hyping since the early days dropped a new single, and it’s one of my favorite new pieces from the group. I love the fuzziness of the guitar here, giving off that gritty edge that balances Madeline’s vocals in the mix. Walking that thin line, the video also encompasses a bit of the fun the group give off, working between clever pop tracks and hook-laden rockers, which will no-doubt here on their next LP. Melt the Honey is out January 19th via Fire Talk.

Content Blocks Share Single

Okay, so, there’s very little out there in terms of coverage on Content Blocks, mostly because the band’s so new they don’t even have all the cool kid socials set up. But, they do have a great pedigree, considering members of the project worked together in Pop 1280. Not, with Content Blocks, they’ve locked into this groove driven beat work, dense in its production, but also with this variance of indifference in a lot of its delivery. That works to their benefit, as it allows the tune to take on a more pensive, exploratory note; I, however, locked into the stabbing synth lines punctuating the tune near the 4 minute mark. Hopefully we hear more from the group sooner than later.

That New Weakened Friends Single

Yesterday, I mentioned in passing booking a rad show with Rosie Tucker amongst others; well, one of those others was my favorite pop rockers, Weakened Friends. The trio unleashed a new track yesterday, their first since the vastly underrated Quitter dropped a few years back. This song churns out relatable lyrical content, filled with hope and self-doubt simultaneously, particularly relating to a new romantic relationship. And, if you’re looking for a good pop rock chorus, you know that Sonia Sturino’s going to deliver it with a huge wallop and a hook, just as you get here. Love to have them back, and hoping there’s a new LP on the horizon. Don Giovanni helped get this tune out there!

SWIIMS Share In Puzzles Video, Drop New LP

Today, Canadian act SWIIMS drop their newest LP, Into the Blue Night, and thus, we’ve got to dive into the band’s fresh single encouraging you to get a little taste of what’s in store. I loved the way this one opened up with these atmospheric flourishes, sort of carefully treading on post-rock. But, then guitars cut through the speakers and the drums hit hard, giving way to a churning bit of indie pop. Mai Diaz Langou has the dreamy take down, though I’m mostly intrigued by the way she lets her voice clime notes and climb back down in the chorus moment; it creates this tension that allows the track’s emotional pull to really shoot off. If you dig it, be sure to check out the LP, courtesy of Mint 400 Records.
