Chanel Beads Signs to Jagjaguwar + Drop New Track

This is the first I’m hearing of Chanel Beads, and I’m definitely spending some time with the previous work of the project; they’ve just signed to Jagjaguwar, and dropped this new single that’s the perfect texturized bit of pop. In a sense, the track reflects the murky pop sounds of the Radio Dept, albeit spun with a more sterile feel, perhaps owing to the project being based in New York City. They layer beats, strings, vocal samples, creating this sublime relaxation, with each little accent piece nearing climax, only to be dragged back into the song’s core. It’s the perfect bit of dreary dream music you’ll need to get you over the hump today.

Elephant Stone Share History Repeating

Elephant Stone is aging like a fine wine? Have I said that before? Perhaps that’s just history repeating. Regardless, as they continue to step into a more expansive pop sound, as opposed to toiling in the tropes of modern day psych, I’ll admit that I’m totally enamored. There’s this warmth that’s always been hanging about in their work, but it seems more apparent here, accented by this great little wash of synths, which inevitably lifts the melody right to your ear. Vocals get some special backing moments too, layering in this nostalgic pop sound that nowadays seems fairly timeless. Still, while they’re working at being pop-centric, they’re still capable of creating mystical moments, as you hear in the latter half of this new jam. This song appears on their new LP, Back Into the Dream, out in February via Little Cloud Records.

New Rosie Tucker Single + Austin Show

This one time, I had less than 48 hours to book a show at Red 7 here in Austin during SXSW; I somehow managed to grab Deeper and Boogarins and…Rosie Tucker. Their willingness to make it work, their charming set and their continued growth as a songwriting machine has made me an avowed fan, and now we can all revel in a new tune. As I listen to this track, having spent a lot of time with their previous records, I can’t help but notice how maybe the punch gets turned down in the mix on the front half of the tune, waiting to deliver this explosive drive that drags the song to a close. And, if you’re a fan, Rosie Tucker will be out on the road for a few dates, including an Austin date on November 16th at Mohawk. New song is available courtesy of Sentimental Records.

Amelia Coburn Shares Peek at Debut LP

There’s been a bit of buzz overseas about Amelia Coburn, especially when Bill Ryder-Jones signed on to work with Amelia for her debut LP. Today, we get this great bit of dramatic pop that puts Coburn’s gifts on full-display. There’s this playfulness to the video version of the tune, something hinting at the magical notions that are toyed with in the lyrical content. Musically, this is pop of another era, though fittingly, right at home as everything old becomes news. Sweeping strings and bounding bits of old-time keys give the track proper movement as the tune pushes the vocals high into the mix. A nice introduction; we should know more about the new LP as the new year dawns.

Daily Worker Share Radio Gurls Video

If you’re a great songwriter, you don’t generally need a lot of gimmicks or tricks, which is why I’ve always appreciated Daily Worker and Harold Whit Williams. His songs have this timelessness, embracing life’s joy and generally kicking it out with a tasty little hook that easily satisfies. Now, we’ve got a fresh track for your ears, dropping in some chunky punk riffs, with a tasty little solo, and a bit of jubilation hitting in the chorus. When it switches gears and drops in that punch, you’re immediately greeted with a that tasty treat you’ve been looking for all day. This track will appear on a new album titled Burn it All Down (Songs for Corey) dropping on November 16th via Radio Gurl Records.

Milk Teddy Share Iron Rose Video

In honor of Milk Teddy reforming to play the Lost and Lonesome 25 Year Anniversary Party, I figured I’d run up this newly unearthed video from the sessions surrounding their last LP, Time Catches Up with Milk Teddy. Starring several band members, the video plays upon the song’s concept of a romantic tryst in a cemetery. Musically, you know I’m a sucker for vocals that seem almost spoken, but hanging onto enough melody that you’re gobsmacked. All of that and you get these floating backing harmonies on the vocals and huge ringing guitars, reminding me I need to go get myself a copy of Time Catches Up with Milk Teddy before they’re all gone! If you’re in Melbourne, they play this weekend! Hopefully the reformation leads to another record of hits!

The Umbrellas Announce Fairweather Friend, Share Single

If you missed the Umbrellas after their stellar debut, you can rejoice today, as the band announce their brand new LP, Fairweather Friend. It’s slated for release next January, but for now, they’ve offered to tease us with this delightful bit of classic indiepop sounds, albeit with a slightly heavier weight to it. The rhythm section feels heavier, perhaps matching the vocal tones, but if you listen to the guitar jangling in there, it almost reminds you of the chorus of a number of Heavenly tracks…not a bad thing. They do take a bit of a momentary respite in the song’s middle to spin some classic pop songs so as to give you a rush from the sugar high, but then just as quickly spin it right back your way. Slumberland Records/Tough Love will drop Fairweather Friend in January

That New Yard Act Tune/Album

A few years ago, everyone was buzzing about Yard Act; they were the brand new baby for those that were in attendance at SXSW. To be honest, I thought they were the poor man’s Franz Ferdinand, as you could hear the style of dance music leaking in, but it didn’t quite feel as passionate. This go round, the band are aiming for something that feels a little bit like the crossing pattern between Talking Heads and LCD Soundsystem; it’s built to get your feet moving, embracing the body’s natural movement and employing all the tricks to get it up and going. It’s a lot more fun this go round, so I’m eager to see where they go now that they’ve announced Where’s My Utopia, out in March via Republic.

Marry Cherry Share Shame Video

One of my favorite Austin acts, Marry Cherry, have opted to transport you back into your time machine and take you all the way back to the club scene of the early 90s. They’ve got this psychedelic blend that often feels more inclined towards pop fanatics, but you can’t hide yourself from the fiery guitar licks that fill the empty space behind the sugary sweetness. And, as if the musical styling wasn’t enough, the video for “Shame” takes on a bit of an old school vibe too, and there was definitely part of the video and track where I swore J. Spaceman was the instigator. They can be quiet and they can be brash, and I love it all. If you’re digging what they’re laying down, might I suggest you find their Knockout EP to enjoy today!

The Problem with Kids Today Share Catchy New Single

Not entirely sure how I feel about the band name, as its a bit of a mouthful, but I’m totally enjoying the latest single coming from the Problem with Kids Today. There’s this spring bounce to the tune, sort of a mixture between indiepop vibes and power pop, which is definitely something in the dadpunk wheelhouse over here. You can feel a bit of grit in teeth of the lyrics, particularly as the track rolls forward pushing the pop aspect simultaneously. This is what I love about rock n’ roll; it can be dangerously energetic and sugary sweet at the same time. The group are dropping Born to Rock next February.
